I agree and disagree with the you don’t draft for need

If you have a player who is rated similarity to a player of need I’m taking the player of need. However in the later rounds like third round and on you take BPA. If everyone just drafted best player available then everyone would most likely be overloaded at one position which isn’t really the case around the league. It’s absolutely makes no sense to draft Cooley to bury him on the third line and that’s not even considering that the devils may consider Mercer a center still

We also need to take Covid-19 into consideration here. Wright was doing terrible in the beginning of the season. He eventually turn it around. What is the overseas equivalent to that? Slaf did make marketable improvements, to the point were some think he is #1.( Lambert might of played himself out of the first round and was top 10)

While Slaf shares similarities, Zacha doesn’t use his physical attributes often, he was label as physical but that was due to his large frame and some dirty plays in juniors. Zacha was a skilled player in a big body, but as we have seen , he rarely uses any of his key attributes. Does he play physical? No! Does Zacha use his “amazing shot”? Sometimes..Is he good down low or on the boards? Not really. What is Pavel? A big guy who plays on the perimeter? It has to be mental or hockey IQ. I also don’t feel Zacha should be considered a total bust because he is a serviceable for 10-15 games a season.

Slaf is definitely physical and hard to move off the puck. He has excellent board skills. If his offense was iff the charts he would probably be number 1. He has done well in multiple tournaments (not just the olympics). Lets see how he does in worlds and pray it’s not too good, bc this conversation might be pointless.

If that's the goal -- 3rd line center -- the Devils can take whichever of Beck, Del Bel Belluz, Hughes, McConnell-Barker or Ostlund fall to the 2nd round. Hell, take Kaskimaki in the 3rd or Morrison in the 4th. These are all legit 3rd line center prospects, many of them 2nd line prospects you can slot down. Whereas, you might not find another combination of skill/power/upside like Slafkovsky for another half-decade.

The idea that Cooley would be happy switching positions or playing 3C behind a pair of higher-upside Cs in Hughes and Hischier is not completely impossible, but it's also not a guarantee.

I simply can't believe the people who blew gaskets about the Devils drafting for 3rd line RW at #29 overall last year are the exact same people plugging them to draft a 3C at #2 overall this year. It's just remarkable.
I don’t know what “drafting a 3rd line RW at 29” means. We drafted a guy that sucks, that’s the issue.

Cooley could be a “3rd liner” and have roughly the same TOI as Nico or Jack if he is good enough. Special teams exist and you can roll your lines evenly the way a team like Carolina does. Look how their TOI is distributed.

Team Slaf but Cooley could easily wind up at wing, reminds me of Clayton Keller being drafted as a center before ending up at wing. However Slaf is a better fit for this team style wise AND might be the higher upside prospect.

I’m no draft expert, but with a floor of Nichuskin and a ceiling of Jagr, I want to be president of the Team Slapshotsky fan club

Google translate:
He first hugged his friend Tomas Tatar and then talked about the fact that the New Jersey Devils could draft Juraj Slafkovsky. Swiss Nico Hischier is looking forward to the championship, where he came for gold

Nico knows

There may be no wrong answers, and that is the joy of having the 1st or 2nd pick. Is it the end of the world to draft Cooley? No. He maybe be a 3C or he might get traded to a cash strapped team. There is an obvious need for Slaf’s skillset and the RD’s. I wouldn’t even be upset if the Devils reach for Kemell or Gauthier, because the are quality players that fit the organizations needs. The only top 10 prospects I didn’t like are Savoie for his size and Wright because his status/production would cause head aches (I don’t like the obligation to take players). I don’t feel like Wright should be taken 1st and I also don’t want the Devils to take Wright if he slips. Wright is a top 10 player but I feel he and the OHL are overhyped.

The concern about Stillman is that he won’t be good enough to ever play on decent 3rd line in the NHL. That’s different.

The frustrating thing about the debate Slafkovsky’s production is he played so few games in each league every season who f***ing cares what the exact raw numbers are. Since when does raw production over 16 games or even 31 games tell you much of anything.

Advanced stats people are suddenly remarkably uninterested in all of the very positive underlying tracked stats for Slafkovsky.

I voted for Jiricek. I like Cooley. But if we want to play this game… Cooley was less productive than Alex Turcotte. Holy shit, you want to pick a guy worse than Alex Turcotte at 2OA!?!

I bet they aren’t just using raw totals for Cooley either (and they shouldn’t), but advanced stats for me and none for thee I guess.

And I don’t care. Whatever. I’m just thrilled we’re not picking 6th.

Pretty decent first period for Slafkovsky. Really showed off the hands in the first period (maybe too much), had some chances and looked like Slovakia’s most dangerous player.
Made a nice play on a breakout leading to the first goal but didn’t get an assist.

Really nice move but he toepicks. Came back hard on the back check

Everyone just wants this kid cuz he's big...

I'm drooling over Slavkovsky's potential after watching the first period. He could be a BEAST in the NHL. I can't remember the last time a 6' 4" player can skate and dangle like that. He seemed to force some plays but he really stands out and looks very gifted. Loving his compete and skating in the game so far. He wants to be a difference maker and isn't afraid to try things. No brainer pick at 2 if montreal doesn't take him. I heard Wright isn't having the best playoffs....

I'm sold

Until I see a few good clips of Jiricek and/or Nemec then it'll be a toss up again

Nemec is in that goal clip but didn’t get an assist either. He’s the one Slafkovsky passed to. He’s been alright. Nothing really noticeable but as you can see there he’s trying to get up in the play as he usually does.

I thought it was obvious enough to not need a "/s."

I take full responsibility for this.
it's only bc the takes are hot

who said having the 2OA doesn't have its downsides??

if our pick doesn't pan out compared to the other options, we'll never hear the end of it. thank GOD nico and jack are better than nolan and kakko

Montreal scouts in the house for the Slovaks game. I'm 98% sure they go Wright though. If Wright falls to #2 I think you run to the stage lol, but that's not happening. They want that 1-2 punch down the middle with Suzuki.
