I really thought Cory was going to hang around for the expansion draft and be sold off to them. What does this mean for that?

and honestly it’s not like this team is going anywhere with Hynes behind the bench so why even waste the cap space on a buyout

Feel bad for him, picked up his Jersey the first Devils game I ever went to. Needed to be done though.

Unless they buy him out, he will still be here and will be exposed in the expansion draft.

Why in the world would he not put a clause in his contract to prevent being sent down? Must suck big time being in the NHL for so long and now having to play AHL, ouch. Maybe he'll get injured soon so that he can be LTIR'd into the sunset...

I’d rather have two million of dead cap space for four years as opposed to having to pay top picks or prospects to get Seattle to take the contract. This is where teams ran into trouble with Vegas a la Karlsson and company, teams are better off just taking their medicine unless there’s no way out.

I doubt we’re going to be a cap ceiling team in the immediate future unless Hall re-signs anyway.

Why even buy him out? I wouldn't bother unless we end up needing the cap space in a year or something. There is little risk in just leaving him buried in the AHL, and if Seattle takes him great. If not, who cares?

He makes $6 million a year, and he’s stolen $12 mil from NJ over the last two years. You should feel bad for the guy writing the checks, not head case Schneider.

I would be floored if they left a guy that they valued the character of like Cory buried in Binghamton. They would buy him out to get his $6 mil off the books and give him a chance to latch on somewhere else.

This is the cap era where cap management is massively important. I'd be pissed if we ate 4 years of dead space that we may need instead of 2 years of dead space we don't just to appease the player.

Ehhh... honestly I think this may be the very best thing for Cory. Try to find his game& fully recover from injury in the obscurity of the AHL.

And if his body truly is shot, then if really doesnt mater either way.

Two years of $6 million > four years of $2 million in terms of wasted cap space.
I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me based on how this is worded. In my opinion, we don't need the $6 million ($5.25 million with him buried) in space over the next two years right now. If we do at some point, we can buy him out then. We may need the $2 million in space 4 years from now. We might as well keep him until we're forced into doing something else.

Oh shit I kinda read the tweet wrong with all this talk of a conditioning stint, no mention of that whatsoever. He'll be back for one more crack at it but it aint looking good. Wonder if we'll hear from Shero, that's our GM right, he still around?

I never understood the love for him. Looking back I wont associate him with anything positive for the franchise.

I wish him luck, but this was long overdue.

Because he's a great guy that was a top goalie in the league for a few years while the rest of the team was a dumpster fire around him.

Really sucks, I love Schneider as a person he seems like a genuinely great guy. But it is what it is, Blackwood starting two sets of back-to-backs, especially this past weekend when he got shelled the first night, so early on is a clear indication of how they view the goalie situation.

Practice was going on earlier, I imagine Hynes will talk for sure. You'd imagine Shero would have to come out and speak on it as well, it's a pretty significant move to make.

Would they dare pull a Gomez and just sit out Cory the rest of the way to avoid an injury complicating a buyout? Not as if you can count on Cory staying healthy either.

Wouldn’t an injury be preferable from a team standpoint? They could LTIR him in theory, insurance would presumably pick up the cost of the contract and and would save them from long term dead money.

I think you play him in Bingo. One of three things can a happen. 1.) he improves and gets his game back to where it is salvageable and maybe you can convince a team to take a chance on him (long shot). 2.) He plays poorly and you buy him out (they are already presumably comfortable with this option) 3.) See above with him getting injured.

Same here. He had a great save percentage for a few seasons...while we were a basement team. Means nothing to me.
