Hey guys, just checking in to see your initial thoughts on Keefe. The team is obviously doing well which I'm sure you're happy about lol, but curious to see what else you think. I am not surprised the team is doing well with him, he seemed like the most logical fit once he was available. The few times I've tuned in the team has been fun to watch

Love him, I remember you being the first Leafs fan who came in here and brought up Keefe to us after the Leafs lost game 7 to Boston and you couldn't have been more right lol. Leafs v Devils ECF :D

There's far more defensive structure under him, it's like night and day from last season. I'm also seeing more extended offensive possessions leading to goals, instead of overly relying on the rush.

Big fan overall.

Big fan, it does seem that he's fit like a glove so far. I think he's done an excellent job at instilling a stronger defensive structure so far. Offensively I think there have been maybe a few more games than I'd like that we haven't really gotten going. Not sure if that's a side effect of focusing more on the defensive side of the game or what.

But the team's had a pretty hectic start to the year with not much practice time. Hoping they'll iron out those details as things settle down a bit.

I am rabidly pro-Keefe. Yeah the shutouts against haven't been great, but the team is one of the best in the league both defensively and offensively.

The team has structure, he says the right things publicly, and the team is well on its way back to the playoffs. Can't ask for anything more.

One of the chief concerns with the Devils going into this season was their defensive ability. Last season wasn’t just a goaltending problem, it was a full scale defensive meltdown exacerbated by poor goaltending. While there’s still room for improvement between the pipes, the team’s defensive work of late is enough to promote optimism that the Devils are for real.

Over the last month, no team has seen a bigger rise in their Defensive Rating than the Devils, who have gone from slightly above average to a top 10 team. That’s off the strength of allowing just 2.12 expected goals against per 60, the sixth-best mark in the league which helped the Devils put up a 57 percent xG rate, third-best in the league.

Here’s where it gets interesting: the biggest driver of that was Jack Hughes.

One thing Sheldon Keefe doesn’t get nearly enough credit for is how he helped develop both Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner into Selke-worthy players. While that lofty height might be a stretch for Hughes, he appears to be taking very real strides in his defensive game. Over the last month he was on for just 1.92 xGA/60 and 0.64 GA/60, both among the absolute best marks on the team. Managing that at the top of the lineup (where the pace is generally much faster) is really impressive — even if Nico Hischier is normally the one tasked with tough minutes. Funny enough, Luke Hughes has taken similar strides in his off-puck play too.

The best thing about Keefe’s tenure in Toronto was his ability to turn a high-octane, offense-first team into one that controlled the game more and defended better. That’s starting to play out in New Jersey as well and that it’s being led by Jack Hughes (and to a lesser extent, his brother) is great to see. New Jersey had one of the biggest jumps in Stanley Cup odds because of it.

Over the moon. Best coach here since Pat Burns.

We've been shut out a few times by teams sitting on leads and keeping shots to the outside while building a house around the net, and it does give me a little pause because it wasn't super hard for those teams to lay back and let us dump it in. So at 5v5 we could still generate a bit more in those situations. But I'd also say, coming out of that stretch, Jack, Luke and Bratt found another level. The team has been gradually getting stronger and stronger, which given all the new faces, is pretty encouraging.

I hated both Ruff and Hynes and insisted that bad coaching/systems was a big reason that the rebuild was stalling. So it feels like a little bit of vindication.

JT Miller..... rumblings he may be available.

Seems like an obvious trade partner with our glut of defense and their need for a Dman with Hronek down !??

A Jack - JT - Jesper Line would be insane

Sheldon not messing around

After a big win is definitely the time to step on everyone's toes. I think too many player first coaches let em coast and then bitch after a bad game.

Hitting em hard today is a sign of a good coach

Haven't listened to it yet, but Pando is the latest Devil to guest on Spittin' Chiclets.

I have like 40 minutes left, great interview!

I dont think we truly know whats going on with him. Obviously thats first and foremost.

Only saw a VAN beat writer replying to a rumor and not shooting it down, so again pure speculaation but its fun to speculate

Would be a nice fit positionally, but finding 8 mil in cap space is probably easier said than done right now. Even if we did find a trade partner for Palat, he has a NMC for this season and I'd be surprised if he waived it with a newborn at home. It turns into a partial no trade next summer, but we'll see if Vancouver does something before then.

Also curious if there's any smoke to the fire about the Canucks locker room being fractured to a degree. Vaguely recall something about Miller and Bo Horvat which led to Horvat being traded. Thought I read something on the main board about Miller and Elias Pettersson not getting along and Pettersson playing much better recently with Miller absent.

Okay, sacrilegious nonsense time. Let's pretend the Rangers reeeeeeeeally bottom out and become sellers. Would you ever entertain one of our blue chip prospects plus a cap dump like Palat for Panarin? 1.5 years left of control, obviously an all-world player.

I'm sure the Rangers would want to move him to basically anyone else, but he loves the area and loves where he lives, with the NMC the team's options might very well be limited.

(Ducks)
The most sacrilegious move I could think of was swapping Simon Nemec for Gabe Perreault. That would be sure to make everyone on both sides a bit angry and nervous about potentially losing the trade.

I love JT Miller but we can't swing that like ZBC said

I like Perreault but I'm super hesitant on him due to his skating. I legit don't think the guy would be able to keep up with Bratt/Jack. His ceiling is a better hands Toffoli type

Of course Valiquette is being a dipshit, but at least I have to give him some credit for being an equal opportunity Karen with his shitty opinions.

To wit: we all know that Don Cherry would have given Jack a pass because he’s American, but lose his shit if, say, Kaprizov pulled the same move.

This is progress, people! :sarcasm:
