Any interest in Andre Burakovsky to replace the LW Zacha role? I was watching him closely last night and I was pretty impressed. I think he may be the odd man out in Colorado and they sign Nichuchskin instead.

Avs fans want Nuke back and are convinced that Sakic will at least try hard to keep him. His play driving, defense and usefulness on all the lines make him uniquely valuable to them. (And in general.)

His points increased when Kadri & Burakovsky became his most common 5v5 linemates, replacing Jost, Donskoi & Compher from 2020-21 and Bellemare from the season before.

Burakovsky is a simpler fella, he’s a great finisher. He’s not great defensively or on the PP so I wouldn’t go that high on the price but he’s young too. He turned 27 in February. He’s got good wheels for a big guy.

Avs fans tend to see Burakovsky as not doing much when he’s not scoring and needed someone like Nuke to drive the line. They definitely don’t mind that he’s the odd man out due to price.

Yea now that I am reading more about him, he may not be worth the price he will command. But it would be nice to have a speedy, big finisher like that in the top 6.

I gave a list of guys who had hip surgery and continued their career so it’s not like Rask is the only example of what can happen. Multiple players won Vezinas after hip surgery.

A ton of guys get it very young now because they encourage guys to treat hip impingement with surgery earlier in their career. Surgery and treatment can have improved.

I’m not super optimistic or anything but I’m not a medical professional, I don’t know what was wrong with his hip or what kind of surgery he had, or what the long term prognosis for him in particular is.
Bernier coming back and playing like Rask this year is one of the worst case scenarios, but I would still say odds are that he doesn't provide adequate enough goaltending or possibly even ends up on the IR again.

Hip injuries aren't a death sentence for goalies overall, but at Bernier's age it would seem the odds are favorable for it being a death sentence.

Luongo had it when he was even older than Bernier and didn't have a bad season until he was 39 and in his final year.

Most of the others were either in their late 20's or very early 30's, like Cory Schneider, who was 32. Although his hip problems started in 2016 when he had surgery to repair his core muscle, but a lot of hip injuries are initially diagnosed as ''Groin''. It took another 2 years for them to figure out it was the hip.

Francouz just came back from being out over an entire season with a hip problem, among possibly other things? He seems to have performed very well, in 19 games this year.

I was actually surprised it was that many, as I don't think he came back until December or so?

Looking at 2022-23

Which wing do the Devils really want Bratt to play going forward with everyone healthy? LW/RW

Is Mercer seen as a top 6 RW or a #3 C?

Is Holtz expected to at least start the season as a top 6 RW or do Mercer and Holtz start as out as #3 C/RW?

I assume Nico and Jack 1/2 at C
Sharangovich top 6 LW and top 6 Bratt RW

Most seem to see Zacha gone leaving a real good top 6 LW missing. Most seem to feel Mercer is best suited as a top 6 RW

Sharangovich/Hughes/Mercer
?/Hischier/Bratt
Wood/?/Holtz (Or do you move Bratt to LW and use Holtz on the right to make the top 6?)
Zetterland/?Mcleod/Bastian

Tatar (31, small at 5'10'/185, projected 34 points this season, another year at $4.5mil)
and
Johnsson (27, smallish at 5'10"/but 194, projected 37 points this season, another year at $3.4mil)
Are these 2 still penciled in as day to day regulars? Aren't there more physical, hard playing 30 point forwards available in the NHL to fill those spots in the lineup?

Do they believe Zetterlund is ready? I would think he gets a shot. Question is what line. He is not a stellar defensive forward and neither is Holtz. Both are much better than the beginning of this season, but neither, as I said, is stellar. So placing either on a line you are looking to provide defense isn't a good move.

Boqvist could be used to center the 3rd line, but I think they would want someone more physical on the 3rd line. He would project to somewhere around 30 points for 82 GP.

That's it for the current Devils forwards except Kuokkanen (projected 17 points in 58 games. What's that about 23 for a full season?

Remaining off the Comets roster would be Thompson, Foote, and Greer.

I get the feeling Fitz will take a flyer on Holtz out of the gate.

The definite forwards therefore appear to be:

C:
Hughes
Hischier
Mercer?
Boqvist?
Mcleod

LW
Sharangovich
Zacha?
Tatar? - MOVE?
Wood
Kuokkanen

RW:
Bratt
Mercer?
Holtz
Johnsson - MOVE?
Bastian

Which leaves:
Zetterlund RW
Thompson RW
Foote LW
Greer LW

The following I see no real reason to keep on board:
Vesey
Geersten

There are some very good UFAs that would be huge for the Devils up front if Fitz can pry them away from their current teams or get those eager to move from their current team to come to New Jersey. .Johnny Hockey, Nino Niederreiter, Evgeni Malkin, Claude Giroux, Filip Forsberg, Andre Burakovsky, Vincent Trocheck, Andrew Copp, Valeri Nichushkin are just examples. There are many more. There are also guys that their teams may be interested to move based on the salary cap like JT Miller and Brock Boeser.

The Devils have lived with their draft selections long enough. It's time to make a few moves to surround the best of those draft selections and start making a move to be taken seriously in the NHL. Many players around the NHL that have been interviewed about various things point to the Devils being ready to break out. This belief could make NJ a good choice for putting down new roots.

On Defense the Devils seem very comfortable with:
Hamilton
Graves
Siegenthaler
Severson

Smith and
Bahl
have been playing. Many seem ready to deal Smith. With a year remaining on his ELC, I think the Devils will give him a chance to see if this season was a sophomore slump.
Bahl appears to some to be an adequate fit and to others not so much.

My thoughts are PK will be gone, but if they can't readily replace him, he will get another smaller contract if he is willing. This has to happen before free agency because they could lose him while looking to replace him before they sign him as an afterthought.

The real physical guy in the system is Okhotyuk, but he is not ready to be the main man on any duo. He needs to be paired with a solid partner.

Walsh's numbers say he is ready for a look, but he must stay consistent defensively and avoid the offensive line turnovers and the defensive zone giveaways. 6'0"/185 could be another drawback.

The following I see no real reason to keep on board:
Vesey
Geersten

A major stumbling block for the Devils moving forward is between the pipes! Anybody who remotely follows the NHL at all knows that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interested to see what you guys see as next season's opening day roster.

All very legit questions and I have no idea what’s going to happen. There are some moves I’d like to see but not sure how realistic they are and if it’s the best moves or not.
Id like a very good defensively sound 3rd line that’s hard to play against and can chip in offence. No sure how to do that or what to do with the guys currently in the roster but that’s what I’d like to see for an end result.
Add a RHD that is in the mold of Seigenthaler. Only UFA I see that are somewhat like that is Lybushkin , Manson , Gudbranson .
Goalie - no god damn clue. I personally like Gibson but a lot of people say he is cooked and his contract is hefty and for another 5 years…
Other guys have question marks too - Husso - flash in the pan? Keumper - will Avs resign him ? Injury concerns ?
Do we need to add to the top 6 ? Or is Shara Hughes Mercer and Bratt Nico Holtz good enough ? That would leave a crappy 3rd line in my opinion. I do not like Zacha Tatar Johnson but .. what the hell do you do with all three and who do we replace them with? I’d like to move all three and try to revamp the entire third line with very good defensive and hard to play against guys . Ideal line - Nuke Trochek ( he will get paid ! 6mil and that’s way too much for a 3c) Marchment or Neiderrieder or Motte or ?
Then where does Boqvist go? I’m not sure if he is a good 3c and if he’s nkt at 3c , where do you play him?
4th line - I really like Bastian and Wood . Wood though only on the 4th line , I don’t thnk he is a very good 3rd line option if it’s for long stretches of games. McLeod I am also undecided on. I like his face off ability and effort but other than that ???
I think our D is very decent but could use one or two more guys like Seigs. Hopefully one spot can fill Subbans departure with one of the UFA i mentioned above.
Havig said all that , what do we do with guys like Zetterlund , Thompson , Greer , Foote , etc if they show they are ready for the NHL? I guess they can rotate in to fill in for injuries or if someone is not playing well . But only if you promote a guy on a lower line and move one of the kids on the 4th line or ?

Karel Vejmelka, anyone? His .899% is better than every goalie that's played more than 610 minutes for the Devils this year.

Only if Steve promises to stop pronouncing his name BORE-Uhh-Kov-Skee.

That's right up there with the VAY-Mel-Kuh stuff.

I don't remember if he still does ir with Logan Couture, but he was pronouncing his name ''Cut-Yor'' for a while and it was really awful.

He was also calling Subban ''Sue-Bon'' early on in his career, though I've heard a few pronounce it that way.

As for the other names though, those are pure Cangialosi-isms.

So are we shutting down Graves for the rest of the season too? This lineup is going to be something by game 82.

I think Bernier starts the season on LTIR and when he comes back we carry 3 goalies.

Either we sign a 1a to split with Blackwood (Husso/Keumper/Campbell) OR we trade Blackwood+ for a different starter and then bring in a Wedgewood type as a veteran backup.
I agree with this, but also think Fitz will explore trading the 2nd at the draft in case those three don't hit UFA/aren't impressed by NJ's offer. If NJ goes into UFA without adding any goalies and is left empty handed then they possibly have to do something desperate (like trade the 2023 1st).

You can't trade the 2023 1st. If things go south, the top 3 picks next year (Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli) would all have gone first overall this year and last year, and Bedard/Michkov are generational players.

If worse comes to worse, the Devils have a very deep prospect pool to deal from, and certainly manage something without giving up top two prospects Hughes/Holtz.
