More JAM. That's what we need.

I feel like one of those guys has to be the backup next year. Poulter should have one of the goalie spots in Utica, he’s had a nice year.
Ya that’s the thing I wonder as well. Don’t see both in Utica next season given Poulter certainly will be one of the two there. Unless of course they do three goalies for the big club which I don’t think is good when one of them is gonna be a young guy you want to get regular reps and game action. I could see it being someone they acquire with Schmid then Daws in Utica.

Another thing I am curious about is if they try on Zadorov in free agency. Given the clear need for a physical presence plus seeming want for another vet on the backend. Realistically, he’s prolly about as textbook as you can get there along with Trouba and Gudas.

Markstrom can provide stability in net for two seasons. And when I say stability I mean he is an actual veteran. Even if he is doing bad he can handle the load.

I think that is worth a price for this young group to continue learning how to compete in this league. And will help us not torpedo our two young goalies.

That’s literally all I want. Vitek showed promise but he is too loosely and goosey in net. Just give me a damn veteran goalie who is good positionally.

kuznetsov on waivers. 7.8mm till next year. Would you claim him? He’s a center but that’s a big contract for a player who’s declined the last few years. I’m not sure what his off the ice status is

Also for all the talk of goalie and the people with an improve it at any cost mentality half the teams currently in the playoffs are being lead by unproven/mediocre/inconsistent goaltenders.

Avalanche with Georgiev/Prosvetov/Annunen.
Oilers with Skinner/Campbell/Pickard.
Kings with Rittich/Talbot/Copley
Hurricanes with Andersen/Raanta/Kochetkov/Martin
Red Wings with Lyon/Husso/Reimer
Maple Leafs with Samsonov/Jones/Woll
Flyers with Hart/Ersson/Peterson
Golden Knights with Hill/Thompson prior to last season.

And then you have Dallas that is easily in a playoff spot despite Oettinger and Wedgewood combining for .900% goaltending.

Unless you're getting a proven consistent top 5 guy in his prime like Saros, it just makes more sense to go cheap on goalie and focus on improving your skater group. If I'm the Devils and the Saros' pricetag is too much I'm probably just going to try and get a combo of Stolarz/Broissot /Spencer Knight (if available for a decent price) and spend my resources making sure the skater group is truly elite.

Vitek was a .909 guy before this year. Markstrom has a career .910. He was also .892 last year. Vitek is .890 this year.
It’s been covered endlessly that sv% in isolation means absolutely nothing because it’s very dependent on team effects.

GSAx is much more reliable from an evaluation perspective, and Vitek was never above expected in his entire career.

Adjusting How We Evaluate and Analyze Goaltenders

Trading real assets for a goalie over the age of 34 is such a bad idea. Can't stress it enough tbh
You literally saw a season ended by goaltending again. Let's see what you think real assets are, barely top 6 players that can't drive play on their own that are severely over hyped?

That 34 year old is literally better than what ever piss poor contributions Mercer or Holtz bring. He literally steals wins. They barely contribute.

People here genuinely have no clue what the hell they are talking about. Half this board thinks its all on the defense even though the metrics like the one's you provide and are talking about show it's the goaltending sinking the team more than anything.

The goaltending conversation really is like insanity. Rewind a month when they started playing Daws and there were a couple of us who said…they’re gonna run him into the ground and he’ll look like a scrub within a few weeks behind this sorry ass system/defense, and people here are still gonna pretend that the next guy in net is gonna be the difference. And voila, here we are, exactly as predicted. When Markstrom fails it will be because he’s washed up, if we just get (insert whoever) he’ll provide at least average goaltender and problem solved…the madness of thinking that just getting that next guy in net is the answer will never end.

if markstrom fails then it will fall on coaching and our system, there's no way we'd end up blaming goaltending at that point

we have the 7th worst GAA in the league, so it's either goaltending or coaching (or both). if we fix goaltending and he ends up sucking, then process of elimination we know what the issue is

Vitek Vanecek GSAx by season:
2023-24 (NJD): -11.2
2022-23 (NJD): 5.1 (-7.7 in the playoffs)
2021-22 (WSH): -5.4 (-3.1 in the playoffs)
2020-21 (WSH): -7.3 (-0.5 in the playoffs)

He was never good.
