Hopefully the Flames come to their senses and cash out now that they’re seven points back and Markstrom is publicly disgruntled
Maybe, but what are you willing to give up for a 35 year old goalie with two playoff runs in him and no retention?

As opposed to a month or two ago when it was a 34 year old goalie with three playoff runs in him and retention.

Also, when the negotiations first surfaced, I figured our 1st would be in the mid 20s. Now it's looking like the pick will be between 10-15.

Totally changes the analysis.

I would probably do something like NJ 1st + a smaller piece (i.e. Graeme Clarke) for Markstrom. But nothing more than that. Hope you can get a 1st or solid o prospect for Toffoli at TDL to help soften moving that pick out. And then you hope markstrom can give you a strong two years over the remainder of his current contract plus another couple decent additional ones on say a two year extension beyond it.

Team leading +47 this year. Leads D in goals with 10. 6-3 205

A 35 year old Markstom for two years should

A.) Not cost too much with no retention
B.) Gives you a stable option as a starter
C.) Devils can properly develop Schmid/Daws

The only scary part is his health. But some goalies can last long and put up good seasons at that age. If the price isn’t bad I would make the trade.
If we will trade for Markstrom, we should find good backup. Daws or Schmid shouldnt be backups. Because we are in one injury of 35 yo goalie away from worser situation than we have this year.

There is also the opportunity cost of making the move now when it is too late. Markstrom was a target because the Flames were out of it and likely out of it. But now in the offseason there are probably going to be better options out there like Ullmark and Saros. Making the move for Markstrom now takes away those opportunities without really helping you now.

I understand his historical profile, but that doesn't make him a good NHL goalie. The guy has had significant off-ice issues in addition to mediocre on-ice play for multiple years now. You need a real goalie.

Vanecek was never better than league average for the record. He had negative GSAx every single season in Washington and he was even more brutal in the playoffs for them.
Those off ice issues and mediocre on ice play (which is something you can say for all the goalies you suggested as stop gaps) are the only reasons someone with his profile is even potentially available. He's as much as a question mark performance wise as those other players you named but actually has significant upside considering his age and his previous level of play prior to last season.

And what was the GSAx of the players you named as stop gap options over the last few seasons? Outside of Broissoit who's played a very limited backup role all of the players you named are in similar boats performance wise as Vanecek.

I feel like one of those guys has to be the backup next year. Poulter should have one of the goalie spots in Utica, he’s had a nice year.

That 4.5 hit on knight is really tough to just take a chance on
That's the nature of the goalie market. paying $6M for a 35 and 36 year old Markstrom is a huge risk (especially when you add the trade assets their asking for), betting on one of these journeyman stop gap options are risky performance wise. I'd prefer going big for Saros and paying the price for him but outside of that you're going to have to take some big risk in net, and betting on a previous elite goalie prospect that's still only 22 certainly seems like one of the better risks to take.

Knight's appealing but another question mark. I think a team more eager to add a high potential question mark would beat NJ in a bidding war if FLA tries to move him, with that said he's an interesting deadline target this year cause he's a drag on FLA's cap.

What kinds of off ice issues has he had? Are you just talking about injuries? He’s had a few, but I don’t think anything long term. I remember him injured in 21-22, but I don’t think it lasted that long.

Wouldn't hate the move, but I'd be curious to think if they want to add that to guys like daws and Schmid.

Player assistance program. I think he has really bad OCD or something?

Should’ve just drafted makar

This is true, though Askarov was a very real possibility at the time compared to the choice for #1 very clearly being between Nico and Nolan.

Though I don't like revisiting draft picks just for the sake of it. I bring it up more so because many people were very against drafting a goalie that high, because we could find a goalie elsewhere.

I just think it's more difficult finding a starting goalie as we've seen. Either you get lucky with late picks, hope a mediocre goalie you trade for can play well consistently, or at least at the right times, or pay an arm and a leg down the line for an actual goalie. Or you can draft a highly touted one.

I’m not even sure Askarov would have developed as well here, we’d have played him way too soon and he’d be learning from Rogalski and company lol. Nashville churns out goalies the way the Packers do quarterbacks, of course he was going to pan out there.

Nobody wants goonery, that's not what we're talking about.

Nothing wrong with a strong check, a face wash, a bit of agitation. You see none of that in their game, they play like son-in-laws.

That's fine, but it hasn't worked for them this season. The look like someone kicked their dog.

Get in a face or two, change it up. Do something different.

But I'm telling you, Ruff won't let them. There's no room for it in his galaxy brain system.
More JAM. That's what we need.
