They bailed on him because those guys weren't at all penciled into the lineup - McLeod was here at the beginning of the year, and Foote was waiver-eligible so he wasn't likely to be sent down at all. Boqvist is an ES-only player who was playing 4th line minutes, and who passed through waivers at the beginning of the season. They didn't want to keep a guy who had worked his way out of the starting lineup and who had no real role when he was in the lineup. As a first callup from Utica, he'd be fantastic. It's easier for a guy to do that sort of thing in another organization.
The problem with Boqvist was he was a bottom six guy who couldn't do much on special teams.

With that said, I'd probably take him over what we trotted out this year. I think we had to consider the McLeod situation as well.

He's better than Nosek, better than Tierney, better than Willman, etc. Kinda don't get why they bailed on him.

Not sure he’s better than a healthy Nosek.

Nosek a real center who’s good at face-offs, good defensely 5v5 and a solid PKs. His production took hit due to his multiple injuries, it’s not like Boqvist will get you much more.

And for all of Boqvist’s alleged speed, he was often a perimeter player.

So much so that his signature move as a Devil was skating up the boards and then getting steered into them by an opposing player.

But you’re missing a notable difference between Boqvist and Tierney/ William.

Tierney and William are on 775k two way deals.
Tierney’s minors salary = 400k
Willman’s minor salary = 135k

Boqvist is on a 775k one way deal.

The Devils don’t have players on 1 way standard deals in their minor system.

I’m not talking about any past buried contracts, that’s different, I mean having pricier depth.

Not that I’d want to watch this team in the playoffs, but conversely, it’s a crapshoot and it makes the 3 games before the Sens one and countless other horribad losses so infuriating.

Boqvist was a lot like Sharangovich in the fact that he was a victim of last year's depth. He had opportunities to distinguish himself and failed to do so. Decent 4th liner, but we had a lot of those.

If you could get a time machine and tell Fitz that McLeod, Bastian, Nosek, Foote, and Tierney would be non-factors this season then Boqvist is probably brought back. But moving on from him was the right call at the time.

I also wouldn't take his stats in Boston seriously, they are much better at sheltering mediocre players than we are.
Sharangovich was 25 goal scorer with one bad season because didn't sleep well with small baby.
Now he is 25 goal scorer again. With few more goals because he had more TOI and bigger role overall. He would be the same here as he is in Calgary because what kind of season we have this year.
Boqvist was and is borderline fourth line player who can play very good in bottom line. And he would be very useful this year for us.

Yegor scores 30 goals. Congrats.

That played Vanecek WAY too much?
I think the correct answer is that he just knows how to win better than the other guys. When the game is 6-5 Devils with 30 seconds left in regulation, Vanecek had the ability to make those last game changing saves to preserve the 6-5 win.

Just like When the game is tied at 5 late in regulation and at the start of OT, Vanecek knew how to make that one extra game saving save to allow the team to score that sixth goal in overtime. :sarcasm:

I think the overplaying of VV was a good factor in him losing all his confidence
Maybe it was, but I believe it whatever happened all started in the playoffs. After being in a 2-0 series hole in his two starts to putting in the other guy and winning 4 of the next 5 to come back and win the series with him on the bench.

His play continued to suck when he came into the next series and had nothing to do with our game 3 win by a score of 8-4, and then he got to play game 4 because of it, which is where he had his first of what must have become 5 times or allowing 3-4 quick goals in a span of several minutes and it got him chased from the game.

I think that wound up happening about 4 times this regular season.

I don’t think it was ever going to be the same for him here after last year’s playoffs.

Although opening night was probably the best game he played in the first two months of the season.

They got even worse after he left tho!:naughty:

I hear Donnie Meatballs will be available when Buffalo whacks him after the season concludes. Talk about a brilliant hockey mind! He and Travis Green would be one helluva tag team and give the Hart Foundation a run for their money!

First thought on Bylsma was hell no.

But at the same time, he kinda checks off some of the boxes. NHL experience, Stanley cup winner, managed to mold the Penguins young skilled players into SC winners and playoff contenders.

He seems to have reinvigorated his career for Seattle’s AHL team, losing in the finals last year and now 1st in their conference.

Fitz absolutely has to nail this next coaching hire. I don’t think Bylsma is the guy but none of the other candidates scream perfect option right now. I can’t see Fitzgerald risking this core or his job on going after a Jay Leach rookie coach either.

Devils need at least one bonafide middle 6 winger, or a real 3C depending on how they want to deploy the existing guys next season.

and about fourth 4th line quality players.

I’d rather find this year’s version of Nosek on the market. I’m sure there’s gonna be a couple or three out there.

I’d like to move on from this one. He could be damaged goods. And he isn’t really that young.

I don’t honestly think you’re gonna see many UFAs back with this team.

Probably just MacDermid because we need someone to keep Rempe in line lol.

Gross.

No on wasting a roster spot on MacDermid. I’d rather bring Nolan Foote back to see if he’s got anything before waiving him. The way to deal with Rempe is to actually score on the 5 minute majors he gets.

I agree with you.

I'm at the point where I want fighting banned from the league, so that this type of player can be completely and utterly weeded out if that's all they're there for.

I'm just telling you what I think we're gonna do. Not what I WANT us to do.

I'd be really interested in what Blueger gets. I think he's been very good this year.

Other guys I'd at least kick the tires on (depending on how much money is kicking around after a goalie) if i were GM would be Trenin, Joshua, Heinen, Roslovic, Noesen. All these guys are gonna kinda be "luxury" bottom sixers, and I wouldn't want them all, but a couple would would really make me feel a little better.
