The Penguins should've won the 2021 and 2022 series v Isles and Rags and got undone by putrid goaltending. (@Bleedred can attest to this as my fellow goalie shit talker) Sullivan put them in that spot to win them those series countless times and the players consistently failed. Up 2-0 on NYR in game 6 and Evan Rodriguez takes a shitty cross check v Lindgren in retaliation that lead to a PPG + Game 5 in 2021 where the Pens outshot the Isles 50-16 or some shit in Game 5 and Tristan Jarry has the worst f*** up you ever see by a goalie. Not sure how that's on Sullivan in either instance. And again, I don't see Berube's system working with this team at all. You mentioned Kyrou and yet he was one of the happier players that Berube was dismissed in St Louis this year.
This season, the Penguins level of play is not great. Yeah, I agree in the playoffs they were undone by goaltending, but that's not what I'm criticizing.

Kyrou may not like Berube personally, but the Blues massively re-oriented their style of play around him and Thomas, letting Kyrou reach 70+ points in his 3rd and 4th full-time seasons.

LOL I don't even want to think about that Pens-Rangers series, they should have beaten the Rangers with ****ing Louie Domingue, they were within like five minutes of doing so and the Rangers wound up getting all the way to up 2-0 against Tampa in the Conference Finals needing freaking Palat to derail their dream run

That was my point linking the videos and mentioning it, Sullivan did everything right in that series and he lost Crosby for 2 of the games as well. That team has Jarry playing in that series and Rags are out in 5

Their roster stinks to high end, do you know most of their guys that were playing last night? Sullivan probably has a hand in some of those guys being Penguins but he's not gonna have control or the roster will be ready made if he came in anyway. And I find it a bad sign if a player is thriving and he still despises the coach somehow

NJ was elite territorially last season. Do we want Lindy back?

I think xG overstates how good PIT is actually playing, given watching them. I don't think they are creating as much as the metrics think (lots of shots but not really dangerous chances).

PIT has also been bad defensively this season, and that's an area the next Devils' coach needs to shore up.

- NJ v Pitt territorially - There is a big difference in getting a team there once vs getting a team there consistently. I'm also one of the few folks around here that have no issues with Ruff's system - so anything that gets them pushing pace again is fine with me.

- don't think its fair to say xG is overstating them - they are dead last in goals above expected (almost 20 goals behind second to last!) which is a combination of age related shooting regression from their best players and a bunch of bad luck (SportLogiq private numbers are comparable).

- They have been bad this season in terms of xGA this year, but hard to know if that is a one year blip or a trend. It is also important to note that Pittsburgh has one of the older teams in the NHL currently, and also made a number of big changes on defense in the offseason.

I'd argue what he has done this year might be his most impressive work - taking the husk of the team that Hextall left them with and putting in place a plan that has not only kept them competitive but could have had them walking into the playoffs if they didn't have such poor shooting luck and an incredibly bad powerplay.

but at the end of the day he literally gave a bank pass to karlsson. if that was a bank attempt, it was literally a pass to karlsson.
Yeah - it was a poor clear. But he had no options and was being pressured.

Expecting the Siegenthaler to make a play from behind the net with no support is not reasonable. Yeah it's possible he could have made a better play, but why create that kind of risk?

Holtz will very obviously be one of the guys exiled.

Neither of the two head coaches, nor the GM have had much favorable to say about him.

Between both words and the icetime/usage.
I agree with this BUT if he does stay, he needs to hit the offseason gym hard. He gets knocked off the puck far too easy. He needs to build his body up like Zetterlund.

could have just tried to eat the puck on the boards no? or a light chip around that forechecker to at least see if he can beat him to it or someone else in support can. moot point now though anyways.

IIRC there were stories that Malkin and Sullivan have butted heads a lot. It's a job though, they're professionals. They made it work.

PIT's roster isn't great. But is it awful? No. I don't think Sullivan is a bad coach at all. I wouldn't have an issue hiring him - I just like Berube more for the Devils.

But IMO the game has passed Sullivan by somewhat since his Cup winning era, and I don't think he's shown an ability to be flexible with his approach.

I didn't know there was a game today until I saw this lol

I was just looking at our Penalties and I noticed that we didn't have 1 player above 60 PIMs. So I thought I should look at how that compares to the rest of the East...I was surprised that both the Rangers and the Hurricanes both didn't either...

I don't know if it means anything.,..but the other division top two teams seem way more aggressive than the top two teams in our division :dunno: I thought it was semi interesting.

Boston 4 players above 60 PIMs
Florida 7 players above 60 PIMs
Toronto 1 player
Tampa 6 players
Detroit 0 players
Buffalo 3 players
Ottawa 2 players
Montreal 3 players

NYR 0 players
Carolina 0 players
Philly 5 players
Washington 1 player
NYI 1 player
Pitt 2 players
NJ 0 players
Columbus 2 players

I don't think it's any different of an indicator as it is to say that last year was an indicator of what we can expect with the core.

We've kind of experienced two extremes in the past two seasons with what our team has gone through. At the end of the day, the coaching hire is going to make the biggest difference in what we experience from here on out. It's tough to say with any certainty what we can expect until we know who the bench boss will be and what they intend to put together for structure.
I think the two extremes of the last 2 years leaves next year as very much a question mark.

Nico, Jack, Bratt, Timo...then Luke and Nemec

Luke and Nemec are still puppies playing with a ball of yarn....the other 4 are a good core but need to be supplemented way, way, way more than than they are right now.

To me it really feels like the building is starting over.

"starting over"? lmao what?

They have the hardest pieces to find. They have 4 great forwards, with 1 being elite (when healthy). They have the 2 best U-21 DMen in the sport, plus another guy in Hamilton who is a legit 1st pairing D.

The pieces that they need are not difficult to find. Of course, they need a coach and a goalie first and foremost.

We’re back to square one. It’s just like this:
