Yeah, all the good vibes from last year are gone. This team isn't close to being a legit contender. Literally everything has to go perfectly this off-season for the Devils to get back on track. I'm skeptical.

I'm not sure I'll go that far, I'm skeptical but their fixes shouldn't be hard ones. They have everything you need in terms of the superstars/top 6/top 4 D besides one more winger plus LD. The goalie will obviously get taken care of, my biggest worry is legit how they revamp the bottom 6 and who they tab as the coach

That’s correlation though. The question isn’t where they are this year it’s what happens in the future .

-Mr Fusco, can I have an advance?

=Payday is Monday.

-I know, but every place else pays on Friday or Saturday.

=And they're broke on Monday. Booze, whores, pissing away their money. This way you've got money all week.....You can save for the future.

-f*** the future!

=No, Tony, you can't f*** the future. ...The future catches up with you, and it f***s you if you haven't planned for it.

-Tonight is the future, and I'm planning for it. There's a shirt I have to buy...

=Sorry, Tony. No exceptions.

-Just wait until you need an advance, bigshot!

Butcher woukd have been fine if he’d played 15 years earlier.
No he wouldn't have he would have been crushed like a bug.... unless he miraculously got to play his entire career with Stevens, Niedermayer and Lidstrom...

But seriously his size and skating was just not up to par for any generation...tons of NCAA guys just like him never even got a sniff in the NHL.

I think he would've gotten destroyed even worse in the 90's like Jim said

Butcher was basically MA Bergeron reincarnated.

Except a worse skater and not as good offensively lol. Bergeron had a great shot that kept getting him opportunities to play.

Yeah as soon as I sent that I was thinking Gelinas was a better Devils dman who flamed out comp lol but was more so generally thinking bad defensively + powerplay merchant type dman

Gelinas was weird...he seemed to have everything except for a brain.

If you put Butchers brain in Gelinas' body you'd have Chris Proger.

Yep, him in the Winter Classic v the Rags in 2014 was the worst performance I've ever seen for a dman. He legit got burned for 5-6 2 on 1's the same exact way and the Rags scored like 3-4 times on it.

Any metrics that elevates Will Butcher into the upper echelon of Devils defensemen is complete and utter bullshit.
This is a far from ideal metric, but remember that this is since 2007-08.

Just to be clear, offense has value here.

Since 2007-08, 45 Devils defensemen have 70 GP in a season and 7 of them have reached 35 points.

Since 2007-08, 589 NHL defensemen have had 35 point seasons.

Since 2007-08, 18 individual defensemen have 8 or more 35 point seasons.

17-18 Butcher was good but it's a shame he never tried to fix that wonky skating stride he had. It's definitely the reason why he's out of the league.

I miss Zidlicky and his patented one handed shuffle around players with the puck
Ah, the good old Zids power move. I do it all the time in NHL 18 (yeah I gave up buying the newest version a long time ago lol). You can hold down the button to protect the puck and just circle the offensive zone like that.

As someone who has NHL 24, you're missing virtually nothing new besides souped up graphics

That's pretty much why I stopped buying it. I spent so many hours editing rosters and fine tuning the settings to where I wanted them and I just didn't feel like doing it every year like I used to. The only thing I actually miss is the more recent prospects and jerseys that aren't in it, but it's not worth $60 just for up to date rosters and jerseys.
