You have 6 numbers there....if you have 6 numbers that are "untouchable" there is no such thing as a total overhaul. If there are 6 guys that are the crux of your team they just need to be supplemented properly...

Here's the thing... I think at some point we have to ask if that 6 is a winning group...if there is going to be a "total overhaul", I think you have to look at the 6 you think are untouchable.

But I look at it much differently. I think you have to separate the defense from the forwards...I don't think the defense is as advanced as the forwards. And I don't want to throw away any of them...I much rather get some forwards with strong defensive qualities to help out with a young defense. Get a real veteran Dman to help out with the youngsters....not a 300 game veteran ;)

The forwards need a little bit more of soul searching in my opinion... I'm not sure your untouchable group has all the qualities needed to win without adding significant players... I think that group as a whole is small and soft and needs to be balanced with bigger, tougher skilled players.

Choices are difficult. But as is, I don't think this team can really compete for the ultimate prize.
I meant overhaul with respect to the coaching staff.

You seriously think that is a group capable of competing for anything?
I don't.

Are we talking just making the playoffs? Sure...but just making the playoffs with no real chance of competing against the upper echelon teams is wasting away years of our best players.

That group looks like a soft easy to play against team with a lot of suspect defensively forwards. A much less talented team could feast on them in the playoffs. I think so anyway.
I didn’t say they could contend but that’s who has team control or a deal for next season. I specifically called them a work in progress. They have to add just to replace players with expiring contracts and that’s before you even replace anyone who will return. I’m just skeptical they change any of the core guys next season.

That lineup has 4 or 5 all-star caliber forwards in the top 6. One of them is a top point producer for the league.

The Rangers last year were going to roll over the Devils “weak” forwards but instead only the Rangers goaltending even kept them in the series. The Devils skaters rolled over them.

You’re big on guys needing a certain amount of learning games before they understand things, these forwards rolled a veteran Rangers team last year in their first try. Imagine where they’ll be when they get more playoff games of experience.

The rangers had an obvious speed deficit compared to us...even still had they game planned slightly better they could have negated our speed better than they did.

Carolina ate us up with a less talented roster and they were more pretenders than contenders.

I am not big on certain amount of experience for everyone....just defense.

I don't think forwards need experience to showcase maximum speed and skill...by the other side of that same coin I think defenders need experience to stop that speed and skill. It's not the same for forwards and defenders....but one caveat, I do think forwards become better 200 ft. players with experience... defense from forwards or defensemen take commitment and reps. Not pure skill.

The rangers bitch slapped us in games they negated our speed. And that really showed a lack of ability to win in different ways. Carolina finished that exposure pretty thoroughly.

Devils also play much better with this roster when they counter and attack. They havent had the luxury of doing that this season with a defensive group that struggled and conceding first so often. Then teams just shut down our rush game and the Devils are forced to press and it leads to issues.

You saw that in Games 1 and 2 of the playoffs against the Rangers. Rangers countered us rather than play their game and the Devils tried to do too much. Once they relaxed and let the game come to them, they countered the Rangers and the Rangers couldn’t handle the Devils speed.

People act like these 'coach in waiting' arrangements happen SO often (and yet I never hear one cited), especially when the guy who's in charge isn't exactly going to agree to be a lame duck and move upstairs after a predetermined amount of time. Or that you could just prevent a guy from getting a promotion interview the way Bill Parcells used to with his assistants in the NFL.

I've said it before, the only time to replace Lindy with Brunette was in that second offseason when you hired Brunette in the first place, coming off two poor years.

Brunette also got that DUI on Feb 1st, and the video of the arrest came out in mid-April.

It would have been a bit awkward to give someone a promotion right after a DUI.

If Ronnie Attard and Connor Bedard played on the same line and they called them the "tard line". Wouldn't all the replays be Pejorative Slurs?

These are the things I think about.
As I stated in a post earlier, things are getting hectic/ugly in here as the off-season approaches, and us posters don't always agree, and we're passionate, but I appreciate every single poster in here for making my experience as a Devils fan better.

Posts like these are no exception lol.

its here. the worm moon... no more waiting for the worms to come.

and the killing moon.

The alarming thing with this team is how they can't win 3 or more games in a row. I think the most we did was a 4 game win streak this year. We have opportunities like tonight served on a platter against a slumping team that had to travel here. Really just some frustrating stuff to see as a fan of this team. I'm hoping Fitzgerald does what needs to be done this offseason with bringing in another goalie but most importantly bringing in the right coach for this team. Their offensive system cheating leaving the zone early is so damn annoying.

The most games they've either won or lost in a row this season is 3. The last time they won 3 in a row was the end of December, which was also the last time they really showed signs of positive traction when they won 5 out of 6 (ironically mostly against bad teams). Since then they've only won 2 games in a row twice.

Sounds like a .500 team that just ain't good enough. It's respectable not losing more than 3 straight but pathetic that we never had a win streak over 3 games. I'm pretty sure all the basement teams did it at some point this season. Just a really weird season this year has been...

This team has me looking forward to Mets baseball (First game of the season is today, I think).

I've arrived at the point where i'm "excited" for the Mets.

That's how bad this season has been.

Also, just give Lindholm the bag. He'd be great with Jack. We need a 2C badly and he's right handed, could play the bumper position. 🙂

Can we bring back Lindy for the rest of the year? He’s still under contract. I’d be okay with banning the Fire Lindy chant and making it punishable by ejection for any fan who does it.

I’m afraid the team will forget how to score or generate offense by the team coach bull frog throat is finished with them.

the Devils had the better xG% in 6 of the 7 games in the Rangers series, and by a pretty significant margin in most of those.

the Rangers "bitch slapped" us because Vitek couldnt stop a beach ball and our PK sucked. It had nothing to do with "negating our speed".
