“Goaltending doesn’t matter”

I guess Domingue vs Shesterkin had ZERO impact in the last 2 games of that series…

MY GOD, what a take.
It didn't because the two goalies were pretty equal to each other.

They don't call him the Dominator for nothing.

I 100% unequivocally disagree with that.

Goals scoring helps defense, more specifically playing with a lead helps defense...no question about it. The numbers show this over and over trailing after 2 is a bleak outlook in the NHL. Trailing after 1 period is not a whole helluva lot better. Playing with a lead is simply easier.

We fell down a bit since October and November but we are STILL 10th in the league in Time with a lead. Last year we were 28th. We never played with a lead last season. If you don't believe that doesn't effect GAA you're nuts.
You know what else helps a defense? Better (and healthier) goalies giving up fewer crap goals.

Just take the L and move on already. There's no way you can make the argument .5 goals scored per game is more important than an entire goal a game fewer given up without jumping the shark the way you have here.

Plus it makes just as much or more sense to say that allowing fewer goals a game helps the offense because they aren't worried about having to play perfect in front of ninth string goalies and raw rookies than your attempted pretzel argument.

This debate is hilarious and if people want keep at it, here’s the numbers if people want to, uh, “analyze” them. (I remember a hot take last season that blamed Jack’s defense for all the losses despite his offense, so he really turned that all around!)

The leading/trailing thing is just a red herring, especially after we've just had three games in the last three weeks coming from two goals down and another couple of games with game-tying goals on empty nets. We played from ahead plenty of games we lost last year, we've played from behind plenty of games we won this year.

Again the bottom line is:

Offense scores 0.5 goals per game more
Defense/goaltending give up 1.0 goals per game fewer

Both have improved but one's clearly improved more and it isn't the offense. Of course there was more room for improvement on the D/goaltending side anyway.

Nonsense. If you are never trailing and hardly ever tied what f*** is happening?

Your goalies ain't doing shit in that scenario.

You could very easily flip that and say goaltending/defense helps goal scoring. Giving up a goal early or otherwise just in a bad time to give up a goal, can deflate the team or crush the momentum they may be building up...and prevent them from scoring more goals.

Why are we even bothering?

Three games just in the last three weeks down two goals, that they got six points in in large part because goaltending kept them within range of a comeback.

The revisionist history is f***ing insane. This really is the MacKinnon 2.0 contract

it still boggles my mind that they don't put the guy with the best shot on the team on EITHER PP unit....

I know who you’re talking about but I don’t even think he’s the guy with the best shot not being used. Zetterlund’s shot>Yegor’s

It's funny you chose the Ranger game

Down 3-1 after two periods outshooting the Rangers 33 to 22..you can easily make the argument we won despite goaltending.

3-1 after 40 minutes on 22 shots is "goaltending keeping them within range*? That's just more nonsense.

No way - Zetterlund has issues with pre-shot movement, he has a very hard shot but it's not very deceptive. He might have a harder shot but it's not better.
