It was a very interesting system. It worked well when EVERY player bought in on every shift. We saw it in 22-23
Even that year, with all the success, the Devils looked their best when plays were broken, both teams were playing pond hockey, and their athleticism/instincts dictated play.

When it was structure vs structure the Devils still struggled. The defense had trouble recovering pucks and covering the front of the net; opponents staying patient was a problem for the devils even with things going well.

In not saying it was bad. I'm saying that it went against one of the biggest rule of defending.

Mercer not close to a deal apparently. It can change quickly though.

I still put such little stock into Pagnotta, even if he gets NHL Network time. His track record has been closer to Eklund's than a legitimate source over the years.

Mercer will sign eventually. It might be short term for now, but I think that will be preferable. If they're having talks, I'm sure it's about a long-term deal and what number is reasonable. And that's a tough one to gauge right now for Mercer coming off a down year. That's why it might be best to kick the can down the road for a year (maybe 2) and revisit it after a hopefully strong bounce back season under a new coach.

A bridge deal would be appropriate.

Much like it was for Bratt.

Give Mercer a chance to earn that big contract he's looking for.

He created so many obviously made up click bait articles with (I believe it was) 4th period that I will never be able to take him seriously.

This. They excelled against teams that also played a loose game. Against structured teams, they struggled, even in 22-23

Pronman’s doing his org rankings, releasing 8 a day. It’s pretty wild to me the Devils are apparently in the top 20, especially considering his prospect criteria is strictly “22 and younger” and no one else, so Gritsyuk isn’t even included.

EDIT: I jumped the gun by a few minutes, Devils are actually in the top half of the league. Either Silayev and Casey are doing a lot of work or he’s putting a lot of stock in the depth of the system. Or maybe both?

It's genuinely surprising to me that he has us in the top half of the league. We have basically 2 or 3 U22 prospects that are safe bets to have long NHL careers

so i read through his criteria again, i think he’s actually including Nemec, Luke Hughes, AND Mercer in these rankings, since they’re all 22 or younger as of 9/15. Now I’m expecting a top-10 finish lol.

Yes, you have it now. It's not a prospect ranking, it's an "everyone under a certain age" ranking.

I think ranking by age gives a better overview as to what teams have a brighter future; even if still imperfect.

LOL @ Travis Green in second.

I wouldn’t have laughed more than a very light chuckle if it were Lindy Ruff. Apparently the oddsmakers must be higher on the Sens than the Sabres cause he ain’t even on there.

Pronman has us in the top 8 of his NHL pipeline rankings. Makes sense as he does straight U-22 so Luke and Simon still count, and we added Silayev. Still pretty cool to be ranked so high after Bratt, Hischier, and Jack have aged out.

Edit: also, the Rangers are only 15th. They have essentially nothing after Laf and Perreault
