The Rangers are a playoff team even if Shesty regresses a little, let's take off the homer glasses here. Are they a Conference Final team? Probably not.

They were middle of the pack/bottom third of the league in most major underlying metrics last year. They struggled 5 on 5 and gave up high quality chances. At the end of the day, basically everything was just pointing to: Shesterkin = very good.

Yes, they probably make the playoffs, but the team itself was a statistical anomaly last season.

our defense corps is honestly so solid

Graves - Hamilton
Siegenthaler - Severson
Okhotiuk/Smith - Marino

I think it's really good honestly. That right side is deep and Siegs is amazing defensively. I think Graves is decent as a 2nd pairing guy, and hopefully Okhotiuk continues to progress nicely.

I'm hopeful the new assistants can help breathe new life into these guys as well. Bring some fresh new perspectives on systems and such. Just need goaltending to not fall apart

I think a large portion of this fan base is going to really miss Severson when he's gone.

Gets way more flak they he deserves, he's a really solid defensemen. Thankfully I think we have great players waiting in the wings to ease the blow, and getting Marino is a good stop-gap so they aren't rushed into bigger minutes right away.

If anything I feel terrible for Sevo in that this team finally seems like they're ready to take some meaningful steps forward and it may be his last year here.

Given that Nemec will probably a regular starting next season... I think we'll manage.
Statistically speaking we'll be lucky if he has as good of a career or as long of a career as Severson has had.

Agreed to all of this.

Severson is a career -129. He has been a negative player every season , even in 2017-18 when we were a playoff team. He has had some god seasons in term of putting up points and playing signicant minutes but I’m ready to move on from him. I’m hoping we are a playoff team and we keep him past the deadline but at the same time getting another 1st round pick would be nice for next year. Nemec should be able to replace Severson in the next year or two IMO. It just sucks because we have on paper what looks to be a good group of defensemen and losing Severson would mess that up till he is replaced.

The Devils as a team have given up over 300 more goals than they've scored during Severson's career. Of course he's going to be a negative in that outdated and mostly pointless without context stat.

There is context to that stat. It means the other team scores more goals than we do when he is out on the ice for the most part...If you want to use the dreadful goaltending from this year than he should get a pass because it can skew his numbers. Do I have to post the clip of him getting embarrassed by the Leafs from this last season ? I like Severson but not enough to pay him what he is going to ask for , especially since our cap situation is like what it was the last few years...

The last time we had a regular defenseman who was + was Larsson in 2015/16...

I’m not so sure Sevs breaks the bank as a UFA. If Klingberg had to settle for a one year deal what does Sevs get? 3 years and maybe $6 mil per? Depending upon how fast Nemec progresses maybe NJ gives him a two or three year deal?
Isnt that what we got Marino for? Hes a better style of defenseman that can fill 2nd pair but is best on the 3rd when Nemec comes of age. So in theory, if Luke is ahead of Nemec in NHL readiness, Marino can pair with Luke and subsequently insulate Nemec. A double whammy.

Severson Id have questions about playing with Luke

I'd be floored if that's all he got. Severson will get double that term if I had to bet.
