One thing you can credit Lou with is he did not screw around with goaltending.
Burke came in his first year with the Devils.
Andersen first year with the Leafs.
Lehner first year with the Isles.
He's maintained high end goaltending through almost all of his career in management.
I’ve been very critical of Lou’s last years, but this is incontrovertibly true: he was a master at finding good goaltenders. Brodeur speaks for himself as a positive for this argument but look at the other goalies that came from the LL box. From the late eighties on the Devils had Burke, Terreri, Billington, Dunham and….. who am I forgetting? I’m forgetting someone I think.
All of them were starters at the NHL level at some point. Imagine in half a decade or so drafting five or more NHL starter calibre goalies! I’d settle for one from the last half decade of drafting and so far the best efforts we’ve managed is Blackwood.
edit: I don’t have anywhere near the knowledge base to do this, but I’d be fascinated to see where LL fits against other GMs in terms of finding solid NHL talent for goal. it wouldn’t surprise me at all to find LL ranks number one among GMs finding goalie talent, but perhaps there are other GMs that have pulled this off?
