At this point they should know if they’re moving towards something positively or if they’re both finished and just waiting for the other side to capitulate. Either way, both sides could move the discussion forward even late in the day.

I am skeptical it is that simple. Why not give him the AAV now and save a few dollars? If he has another good year the AAV only goes up. At this point if Fitz needs to see another good year out of Bratt to justify paying him then the team can't properly evaluate its own talent in my view.

That and I'm skeptical Fitz wants to pay 'market value' to begin with. He wants to get him on a team-friendly deal a la Hughes (albeit that was a slight gamble they won), Nico and J-Siegs.

In each case they overpaid for actual production at the time and based it off what they expected in the future. Which to be fair is the proper way to sign a player. If Fitz sees Bratt as a PPG player or very close to that then a deal at $7.5 mil per that eats up some UFA years is a team friendly deal. I can't see Fitz making a long term offer to Bratt if he sees him as a 60 point player so I'm not sure where the disconnect is. It will be disappointing if we never learn the details.

That's less than a season. 55 games is not enough too get a true picture. I was posting in response to the negativity on blackwood, that's it.

It's not enough to get a true picture of what? That he's shot for good? Or that he wasn't good in those 55 games?

I would say it's absolutely ENOUGH to get a true picture that he hasn't been good since that span started.

That does not indicate that he can't return to how he played before that, but I'm not personally betting that he'll regularly be a .915% goalie in a league where the average save percentage has been .908% and .907% these last two years.

he brought up good points that maybe Jesper just wants a short term deal now so he can get an even higher raise next time, as opposed to fitz perhaps wanting to lock him up for term. and we can just kick the can down the road to next offseason

that way, the devils can save some money this year and extend him for even longer next year if he does really well and if he doesn’t repeat or do better than he did last year they can obv still extend him but not for that much money.

that way, the devils can save some money this year and extend him for even longer next year if he does really well and if he doesn’t repeat or do better than he did last year they can obv still extend him but not for that much money.

Devils lose a lot of leverage in that scenario.

After 2 difficult contract negotiations I doubt the third time would be the charm with them getting a long term deal done.

i think they'll just let him play the year, regardless of the coaching change. maybe its a good thing for him to see what it's like when a coaching change happens
