Some talk that Trotz woild like to maybe have a different role than HC . Maybe a GM job. Friendman saying Winnipeg , Philly , teams still in playoffs that will all be looking into Trotz lol. It will be a shit show trying to predict what he does but I’d say the likelihood of him commimg here is low.

Some notes:

Thinks the devils should be willing to give up at most our first round pick (5 or lower) and a young player like Ty Smith or a B prospect and maybe a later round pick.

Thinks Fiala’s extension would happen quickly and come in somewhere from 7-8 million.

Fiala is a really good player.

Biggest con would be losing that high draft pick.

Some good articles that have just been posted.

Dumba seems like a guy we'd acquire if we were not going to sign Sev's. But I'd rather just keep Sev's as opposed to trading for and then signing Dumba.
Personally, I don't trade for either Fiala or Dumba.

Dumba's injury history is too scary for his likely cost, and the Devils certainly don't need to be giving up the farm for a skill winger, even a very good one like Fiala. The Devils need goaltending, a 3-RD, an entire 3rd line and some more interior players. Let's use the cap room/trade assets to fill actual needs. Hughes, Bratt, Hischier, Sharangovich, Holtz and Mercer will provide a ton of scoring next year, and thereafter.

No one is talking about the Devils giving up the farm for Fiala. And I think after goaltending another top line winger is the devils biggest need after goaltending. If they don’t resign Severson than RD is probably a bigger immediate need.

Fiala would come in as the Devils best offensive player and we can’t just count on someone like Holtz to be that guy. I’m not sold on him and we aren’t even sure he’ll be ready to play in the NHL to start next season. And it’s unlikely he’ll ever be on the level Fiala. Fiala is a highly skilled winger who can score. Not the perfect fit but a decent one and there’s very few Tkachuks out there and they aren’t available. If they get a top line winger like they need that pushes other guys down the lineup into the 3rd line spots. Also not sure they need to acquire a whole 3rd line when we have a ton of solid young players pushing for spots there. Holtz, Zetterlund, Boqvist, Thompson, Foote, Kuokkonen. And Tatar is at the very least a capable 3rd line players right now. We need a top line winger much more than more third line players and it would be much more valuable. We literally have too many 3rd liners right now. Tatar, Johnsson, Boqvist, Zacha as well as the young guys.

The Devils are going to need at least one more really good winger to be a contender IMO.

the first and ty smith? for fiala? nah no thanks esp considering the wild are tight on the cap and not many teams can afford to add 8 million like we can. price should be lower then that and fiala isn't exactly the world beater that would make me give up a top 5 pick for.

Our offense is good but it's not great. If one of Jack/Nico/Bratt comes out of the lineup we're noticeably different and if two come out we're totally f***ed.

Holtz may or may not be another guy but we cannot expect him to be. His NHL stints have all been rough and even if he does become a star it's not going to be immediately.

I like Fiala and he'd be a very good player for us. If he had some term I'd do it. But that pick is very, very valuable and if we move it we need to getting a long-term asset back. Not a one year guy.

I don't think Trotz is a fit for our roster construction. Maybe one of the best coaches in the league but I do not want to see us play a defensive style.

I would be curious to see what would happen if Jack played under Trotz. I’m not sure I buy that he would stifle him significantly. Barzal and Jack had very similar micro stat profiles this season, it’s just that Jack was way more dangerous when he was in the o-zone. Maybe that’s system related, maybe it’s just that Jack is a more talented offensive player.

If we have enough offensive threat to capitalize on the defensive advantage we would supposedly get, I think it's a win. I'd be more than happy with no player being over a ppg but winning a shit ton of games.

I don’t think I would comfortable paying 4 forwards close to 32 million between Jack, Nico, Jesper and him. Go after someone like Nichuskin and keep our top 7 pick in the worst case scenario l

Holtz has a PPG season in the AHL. Fiala had a PPG season in the NHL, they’re not even remotely the same thing. Holtz’s numbers at his age are some of the best historically, but there’s no guarantee that translates to the NHL level and even then, it’s also a matter of when.

The UFA thing is irrelevant because you don’t make that trade unless you have a long-term extension lined up or committed to from Fiala. Fiala on an extension for Holtz+ Kuokkanen + 2022 NJD 2nd is pretty good value for NJ.
Given Holtz's age, PPG in the AHL is very good. Being 1 year from UFA is not irrelevant because it lowers the potential market for him and what should be the price paid.

I don't see why we need to pay a premium as you are suggesting with that package.

Yes to Trotz. Think it's doable as well. Fitz was the captain for Trotz for four seasons so they've got a good history. Fitz gets one more coach as Devils GM. Who better to go all-in with than a guy who turned the worst defensive team in the Isles to a top defensive team?

Yes to Fiala. It's a no brainer to trade a 1st + Smith for an extended Fiala. Not sure why the Wild go for it unless they can't manuver around their cap by other means. Losing Fiala would be a huge blow to a team looking to go far in the playoffs.

Jim, do you think anyone likes the results we have NOW?

no playoffs...and another high draft pick.

We've become the Edmonton Oilers EAST.

I would rather change that and get to the damn playoffs again.

And if that means boring hockey? Then so be it.

Oh and WELCOME BACK! I thought something happened to you.
Honestly?

I do think that there are some people like this constant state of "Hope for the future"..."They're young it'll come, next year..." Is almost a safe space to deny reality.
