I have no doubt they do. I would think every NHL team likes him. I just think the Devils come up in these reports a lot because we have the cap space that most other teams do not have. I have little doubt the Devils have discussed it with Minn- GMs talk all the time. I just have my doubts things like pick 5-6 or Holtz straight up are what is being discussed.
I thnk it’s a little bit more than just assuming we like Fiala . Someone posted here that our head scout or one of our head scouts has been scouting the Wild like crazy.

Man we still have Schneids on the books for 2 more years. Next year we will be paying Schneids, Bernier, Blackwood, and whoever else we bring in.

I also see that Matthews is a UFA after the 23-24 season. Currently on the books $11.6 per. Does he get more than that on his next deal?
He absolutely does unless he falls off. I’d imagine 12.5+. Top 2 player in the league.

So a slight raise. That's reasonable.

How bout this one. 2023-2024 season.

Would you rather have Matthews Tavares and Marner at $33.5 mil, or Hamilton Hughes, Nico at $24.25 mil?

Hell yeah?

Matthews has a 5 year/11.64m that started in 2019-20, which he signed on February 5th 2019. (It was originally 5 year/11.634m but almost all of it was paid in signing bonuses while the salaries were the minimum, so when the new MOU raised minimum salaries Matthews got a raise.)

In 2019-20 two players had a higher cap hit, McDavid and Panarin.

McDavid signed his 8 year/12.5m deal in July 2017 but it started in 2017-18.

Panarin got a 7 year/11.643m deal on July 1st that started in 2019-20.

Dubas tried to get a longer deal but Matthews asked for significantly more money if more UFA years were to be included. There’s only one UFA in this contract.

Dubas kept it shorter so the cap hit would be 866k lower than McDavid’s. Matthews asked for more than McDavid made.

Matthews had a fantastic start to his career and won the Calder but McDavid won the Ross, Hart & Pearson Trophies his 2nd year and Ross & Pearson Trophies his 3rd year. His 8 year deal includes four UFA years. Matthews contract asks were brutal, he’s a great player but damn.

Did John Tavares’ 7 year/11m deal starting in 2018-19 screw up the internal cap? I don’t think it was it, I think Matthews just wanted his money.

Lamoriello gave Matthews all the max bonuses on his ELC, so Matthews even squeezed Lou, though Lou claimed that there was never any debate over that and AM earned it. (This pissed off Marner considerably since he got the “bonuses for individual achievements are bad for soul” speech the year before and was stiffed out of his “B” bonuses worth millions.)

Maybe the combination of 1) being one of the highest paid players in the NHL while on a bridge deal 2) being on a team that has struggled mightily with the cap crunch caused by the big three’s contracts will make him consider taking a little pity on his GM and not ask for the moon again.

Well that was just my guess wouldn’t surprise me if it was more.

And I don’t know we’ll see how our guys do next season. Tavares also hasn’t looked that great lately.

I was reading something on Phillys need for a new coach. They discusses Rick Tocchet. I'm not much for retreads, but i like how the writer broke down why he's a good fit in Philthy. Help run the pp in Pitt, turnee AZ aroubd aa best he could. He's actively looking for a gig, anyone have any insight on him behind our bench? Seems like a no nonsense kinda guy. Just thinking outside the box, tell me why it sucks?
Caveman

You can tell he’s a caveman by listening to him on TNT.

Struck out both head coaching gigs (he even had good goalies in Arizona, Tampa Bay not so much)

I don’t understand why he’s even in line for head coaching gigs still. I don’t understand why the fascination with him, but it really only seems to be Philly that’s so fascinated with him. Although he was a name Seattle threw out there until they hired Flyers reject Dave Hakstol.

He even hired John MacLean to be one of his assistants in Arizona. Worst coach in the history of hockey John MacLean.

He strikes me as the type of coach that would like McLeod even more than Ruff does.

I remember watching an interview with him in Arizona talking about how he doesn’t buy into these analytics too much. Which is another reason that Chayka is a fraud and his whole “Analytics guy that failed” is a false reputation. “if analytics are so great, why did Chayka and the Coyotes fail?” Because Chayka wasn’t really this analytics genius that he falsely gets labeled as.

Let Philly hire him. That’s what’s best for us and the rest of the division.

Would I really be opposed to him as an assistant? I mean, maybe not. Head coach? Keep him away.

Does the player trust the team and want to win? If both are true he should be willing to take a few dollars off thr open market price. If the player either doesn’t trust the team or prioritizes the marginal utility of the higher payday over the potential for team success then the team has a decision to make. It has to work both ways of course. The team has to show trust and belief in the player. We will see how it shakes out with Bratt.

Who would you like to see be the new coach going forward?
Mike Sullivan or Boudreau.

Sullivan would be at the top.

I was not a fan of Boudreau in the past, but I think he’d work well here.

Between the Rangers recent “Dat grit and physicality” movement and their love for the scrubs and Gallant keeping Shesterkin out of the game after the Rangers tied it, I’ve completely turned on him.

I’m pretty sure he’s got a lot of pull with this movement of grit and all the craters they ice. And at this point I’m happy he didn’t come here. I’m almost certain Ryan Reaves would be here if Gallant got hired.

And he would have gotten a longer deal than Ruff and even more rope.

I don’t think Gallant is Alain Vigneault bad, but yea certainly overrated. With Babcock pretty much blacklisted and nobody really still believing McLellan is good anymore, he might now be number one on the overrated list of coaches. Used to think Boudreau was overrated, but he’s won me over in the last few years.

Speaking of Boudreau, stay the f*** away from Travis Green. I’m convinced he’s the worst head coach since Doug Weight.

Congrats to Pando, he just was selected as the head coach of his college team, the Boston University Hockey Program. Last year he was assistant head coach of BU and the year before that he was the assistant head coach for the Boston Bruins. He got what he wanted.

That is far too much. Given the age difference and the season Holtz just had, straight up is fair. Fiala is one year from UFA.

Johnsson, Zacha and Tatar will all be gone after next year.
Holtz has a PPG season in the AHL. Fiala had a PPG season in the NHL, they’re not even remotely the same thing. Holtz’s numbers at his age are some of the best historically, but there’s no guarantee that translates to the NHL level and even then, it’s also a matter of when.

The UFA thing is irrelevant because you don’t make that trade unless you have a long-term extension lined up or committed to from Fiala. Fiala on an extension for Holtz+ Kuokkanen + 2022 NJD 2nd is pretty good value for NJ.

Holtz's season was historic because virtually NO top 10 pick that can score goals at the rate he did stays in the AHL for as long he did...I'm not sure that is a positive at all.
