You can talk assets all you want (I personally believe we had more than enough that's how we got Palmieri and Hall and were able to trade Coleman for a kings ransom) regardless If we didn't miss our top picks from 2015 through 2018 we wouldn't be in the shape we are. It really is that simple.
I think missing on almost all top 2 picks 2005-2014 was astonishing. It's hard to comprehend such ineptitude, it was devastating, leaving the system threadbare. I agree though, those later picks failed as well. That's a lot of poor drafting, and helps explain why it's been such a struggle.

If anything was learned from these playoffs is that goaltending is hyper important and can take even a mediocre/bad 5 on 5 team through multiple rounds
this is absolutely nothing new. always was like this.

but there is the other lesson from the past: goalie performances (with very few exception) are heavily fluctuating and are hardly predictable. for every vasilevsky you get two to three bobrowskys. investing high cap hits in a goalie is high risk business. plenty of teams prefer a platoon solution of middle tier goalies, in the hope at least one is available and performing.

depending on bernier's health projection the team needs either another 1a goalie or a very good backup this off-season. i would vote for the first either way, as blackwood returning to form is very much in doubt and needing two starting calibre goalie next off-season won't be any easier. bernier with his salary would likely pass waivers and if gets picked up, the harm wouldn't be very high.

10 years of being a dumpster fire has left me broken.
I don’t know how old you are, but I have memories as a 7/8 year old getting my first Sean Burke devils jersey. Yes, the lows are low, but the highs of the mid-90’s were much greater. Be a little patient because I think we’re going to see multiple cup runs in the next 2-10 years.

Dougie, Graves, Tatar?

And what happened to "skills skills skills"?

Not that I am against the idea in general. But I'm just not looking to trade valuable chips for a winning vet who will take up a lot of cap space. Solid vet defensive oriented 3rd pair RHD is my #2 priority. I'd be OK with a similar 3rd line lw but need to clear out the previous acquisitions who didn't pan out, ie Tatar and Johnsson.
you forgot subban, simmonds, bernier and crawford.

I'm 37. I vividly recall those highs and now these lows are maddening.

Are you going to ignore the draft position? The average 1st pick during those years 29.7 - And we were winning...A lot of winning

We also had a .590 Point percentage from 2005 to 2014. We won more games in 2007(49), 2009(51), 2010(48) and 2012(48) than this team has won in the last 2 years combined (46). That f***ing bad with a #6, #11, #1, #36, #17, and another #1 in the lineup.

And there are still 5 active NHL players from those picks - 2 played on the team THIS year in Severson and Wedgewood. and there is Larsson, Coleman, Merrill.

- The 2005 1st pick #23 was the main piece in the Kovalchuk trade. The 2007 second pick #79 was a piece in Zidlicky trade - Two important piece that got us to the finals in 2012 and won 48 regular season games.

2005 top 2 picks #23 and #38 = 178 games
2006 top 2 picks #30 and #58 = 52 games
2007 top 2 picks #57 and #79 = 87 games
2008 top 2 picks #24 and #52 = 120 games
2009 top 2 picks #20 and #54 = 504 games
2010 top 2 picks #38 and #54 = 551 games Both players still active
2011 top 2 picks #4 and #75 = 1067 games Both players still active
2012 top 2 picks #29 and #60 = 658 games Severson active Matteau played 1 NHL this season.
2013 top 2 picks #42 and #73 = 119 games
2014 top 2 picks #30 and #41 = 45 games

I’m 32. My earliest memories are ‘95 when I was 5 years old and in kindergarten. From kindergarten to graduating college, the Devils only missed the playoffs twice. My entire adolescence all I knew were good Devils teams and I really took it for granted since I didn’t know the other side. It’s definitely been a tough past decade haha.

A bunch of embarrassing nonsense that follows

From 2005 to 2015, the Devils did not draft a single first line forward. This is 11 drafts.

They drafted some decent defensemen, but they got almost no value out of any of the forwards they selected in these years.

The pieces for a rebuild were never going to be there because the Devils were drafting low and not often, and the Devils did slightly better in 2011 and 2012 than they did in say, 2006 and 2007, when they did nothing. The fact that the Devils missed the playoffs and didn't draft a single useful player in 2014 is an embarrasement.

Fire away!

Trade for DeBrincat and Murphy from Chicago.
Sign Marchment, Mikheyev, and Campbell.

Adam Henrique was a 1st line forward for a couple years

he really was not. His career high is 51 points (as a rookie oddly enough)

Realistic CHI-NJ trade, but Boq at 3C bothers me a little. An injury to either Hughes or Hischier, who's moving up to Top 6? Mercer sliding over?

bratt extension ✔: reasonable term/AAV

sign marchment ✔campbell ✔mikheyev❓: like the first two, unsure if we need someone like mikheyev especially at 4 years/12m. bottom forward group is already crowded as it is

debrincat trade ❌ too rich for my blood personally. I think they'll end up keeping the pick

debrincat trade WAAAAY too rich.

I mean...giving up Holtz *AND* the pick?

I'd give up Holtz (and the others) for Debrincat AND KEEP the pick.

Boqvist at 3C bothers me too. But that is something that can be addressed at a later date in the future.

I don't see a viable/realistic option as a 3C out there this offseason.

And yes, if Hughes or Hischier are out of the lineup, Mercer slides to C.

I think Mikheyev plays an incredible hard nosed two way game that would be valuable to the Devils. He's also more of a middle 6 forward than a bottom 6 forward. He scored 21 goals in 53 games this year. (That's a 32 goal pace, believe it or not)

The DeBrincat trade is steep, but we are also acquiring Connor Murphy who has been the Blackhawks 2nd best defenseman the past 3-4 years. He's a damn good player in his own right.

Murphy coming back is the reason we are giving up Slafkovsky and Holtz.

I am of the opinion that I would trade at least one of Holtz or #2 overall for an immediate upgrade, but I would not trade both of them for Debrincat.

One of the Blackhawks made the case that they want the Seth JOnes trade on the main board and I broke that down and basically said that ended up being #2 + Ty Smith + something like a 23 third.

I'd do that lol
