FA hasn't started yet, we haven't made a pick in the draft, and I already feel like we could just hang it up and expect to compete for a cup this year. This is incredible.
Need to figure out goal tending, but what drama is there going to be next year for us? Everyone is locked up.

So where we at with this? I don’t want an extended Hellebuyck unless it’s like 3 years.

Don't try and sign him, his ask is simply not realistic + Winnipeg wants him to sign to get a greater return. Just trade for him as a rental and try to sign him over the course of next year at something not insane.

Do we keep Toffoli or replace him with someone else is the only big question. There will be some RFAs. If we don't do anything with goaltending this year we might look into it next.

I'm still not remotely worried if we go into next year with Vanecek and Schmid as plan A.

I would not give Hellebyuck anything more than 3 years and I certainly wouldn't pay him $9+ million/year

Hellebyuck would be a one year all in, since after that his value will even with any possible discounts out of the reach. Even with the most rotten year, he would still be a minimum 6M+ goalie next year.

Ya, I mean, I'm just going along with the conversation thus far, but his numbers really don't suggest he should be getting huge money. He had a .910 in 21-22, and a .916 the year prior. And didn't have a big playoffs.

I mean he's good, but not Shesterkin, and he'll be 31.

But if Fitz is sniffing around, and is going to send quality assets the other way, he has to be willing to give him a contract, and he has to know that Helle is not going to sign on the cheap.

But how much do we send the other way for a one year guy?

I was thinking of Toffoli, a guy who scored 30+ goals, and Shara seemed like a pretty tepid return. Seems like a guy like that gets more at the deadline.

How much do goalie's tend to get at the deadline?

The 4 remaining RFA's are McLeod, Bastian, Boqvist & Bahl.

Doesn't really make any sense from an asset management standpoint to not qualify any of these players - hopefully this is just a case of Fitz playing hardball.

If I had to guess, McLeod would be the top candidate for asking too much - maybe Bastian as well.

Boqvist wouldn't be a massive loss, but would still rather get something in return for him versus losing him for nothing.

Didn't he have a four year stretch where he lead hockey in shots against? He had a .915 SV% over a 4 year stretch leading the league in total shots against (think it was like 30 shots against per game). He's a legit #1. Nobody's Shesterkin but he's that next level. Agree that he shouldn't get a long term deal above $9 Million but he's undeniably a Vezina caliber goalie.

potential 4th line replacement? is superbuddies dead

edit: jk, doubt it if two-way $ implies anything

Bowers is absolutely bound to start the year in Utica.

If there is hope that he can reclaim some potential upside, it will have to begin down there.

i finally saw someone mention on twitter buck has come out and said he wanted 9 million a year. yeah forget that even as a rental i would say forget that the juice isn't worth the squeeze there. he def is starting the season as a jet. not sure where he thinks he will make 9 million esp on a contender.

the return they will get for him is going to be so little compared to what people think it was/is

He's definitely a bull in terms of games played, and that has value(though maybe makes one wary about tread on the tire) but last 3 years his save% is .915. Granted last year was his best in that stretch at .920, but he's never posted back to back years of .920 or better.

Last 3 years Helle ranks 9th in save%, and 8th in GSAA.

Sure. I think he's still insanely valuable and puts us as a top 3 cup contender if he's in our net. You give us a goalie that's top 10 in this league and we're probably bullying everyone. FWIW, I'm speaking solely in terms of 2023-24 and not really in terms of whatever the extension is. I'm all for renting him and then turning Schmid loose in 2024-25.

I should also note Helle has played the most minutes reg season minutes over the last 3 years. As I say above, a bull in terms of GP.

Not a ton of playoff games though, so the wear and tear is less of a concern, and I would look to immediately cut those minutes, especially if VV goes the other way, and Schmid is our #2.

If he is so tapped out that he can’t pay Boqu, mike and Nate 1.5 then he is in trouble. All of these guys will have multiple teams interested if they walk

If we sign all four of those guys and spend a total of 6M, that gives us ~3.3M in cap space to work with. That would make a Vanecek+/Hellebuyck or Schmid+/Ullmark swap very tight cap wise. The latter puts us over the cap, meaning we'd need to move NHL salary back to BOS (which they won't do, the whole points of moving Ullmark is to save cap) or let someone on the roster go.

The Devils could get Helle right now or they could wait a year until he turns UFA and they have another year of data on Vanny and (especially) Schmid.

Fitz shouldn't be acting as if the window closes in 12 months and he absolutely shouldn't be trading Holtz right now.

Sometimes, there's such a thing as having too much urgency. We're approaching that point now.

Whether its Hellebyuck or not, we'd do best to acquire a better goalie for this year. If its a rental then so be it, or maybe Ullmark with two years, but with what could be our best roster for a little while until we get more relief with Nemec Holtz etc., you should probably not spend the year trying out the duo again

If they do its no biggie but I think Fitz realises this may be our first big chance at the Cup; and its not like we wont contend any longer, but it ebbs and flows and this year looks very promising
