It’s not really fair to evaluate Luke’s defense yet. He just didn’t have to play all that much of it in college. He’d tend to retreat on defense to the front of the net and wait for the opponent to lose the puck and then counterattack. His team didn’t exactly play a defense first system and he wasn’t asked to stay home. My only criticism of his defensive play was that he looked to half ass it at times on puck retrieval. He usually got away with it but a few times it led to him getting caught behind the net. It’s an easy fix for him if he pays attention. Im not sure he will ever be Marino in his own zone but that’s the sort of defense he can strive towards.

i dont even care about his defense. put up a shit ton of points make the powerplay lethal then you can worry about fixing your defensive game.

Jack suggests that Luke is a pretty competitive kid. I don't doubt he will want to improve his defensive game right from the get go. He will probably never destroy guys with big open ice hits but I do expect him to do a good job with positioning and his stick and of course his feet once he is properly coached on it.

2017 Rookie camp....that means August 2017.... After 3 years of Shero drafts....25 total picks, a #1, a #36, a #11, a #41, a #6 and #42. Not one defenseman produced, pretty much all shit aside from Nico with these picks.

Not sure at that point Louis' name should even be mentioned?

In fairness, it's a rookie camp roster. Here's is last year's roster:

You've got Nemec, Holtz, Schmid, Bahl, then a combo of question marks and kids with no real chance.

In 2028, we could easily be looking at last year's roster and talking about how it didn't work out.

I have high hopes for Filmon, Vilen, Foote and more, but I also had high hopes for Merrill, Davies, Butcher and more.
