Luke should be ahead of Carlson and Michkov
I’ve watched plenty of Michigan games and many WJC games the last couple of years. I cannot comment on Carlson and Michkov and respect that there are people who watch them regularly but I think any ranking of Luke Fantilli and Cooley is ok and comes down to preference on some level. I only saw Hutson at the WJC and college playoffs and while he is super smart he’s not dynamic and doesn’t jump off the screen as a result. Fantilli and Luke just look like they flip a switch and afterburners kick in. Cooley is super shifty most of the time. Hutson relies on smarts and touch more than the other three to my eyes. No reason he can’t be very successful but I am not sure how well his play without the puck will translate. My guess is that newer defenders who cannot defend are accepted and he will get by like Quinn and Karlsson.

IIRC Quinn was actually pretty decent defensively last year. Hutson’s even smaller than Quinn though and while he can skate well he can’t skate as well as Quinn which will limit him ever more defensively. I disagree on Hutson not being all that dynamic. I don’t think he’d be able to have the success he does if he wasn’t. Hutson’s probably the most interesting prospect out there because of how unique he is. The Habs having Reinbacher is probably a best case for Hutson to be able to play his game and be as effective as he can be. Mateychuk’s a similar one. I don’t know how Mateychuk played last year but in his DY he basically a rover. People say guys like Casey and the Hughes’ can play like rovers but Mateychuk was like a full rover constantly jumping into the play

Quinn is ok but he’s limited in terms of defending in front of the net and the boards and puck battles where he can’t grab the puck quickly and run. A number of guys rely on smarts and skating and quick hands to defend. Jack does that as does Elias Petterson on Vancouver. Usually they are fine. When the play slows down and they get stuck with a bigger player in a grinding situation it’s tougher. Of course as a defender Quinn can get stuck a bit more often but the issue is that most of the time it’s fine and I’d expect Hutson to get away with it as well. It’s a function of the way the league is going. A defender doesn’t need to be Scott Stevens to get by. With Hutson’s skill with thr puck it is probably worth the trade off.

Jack and Elias are centers and should cover the ice from the beggining. Defensmen should defend. Vegas cheated on Vancouver in play off few years ago when they played against them and always forced Quinn. Hutson should be nhler, but how he will handle against Tkachuk 2.1, Tkachuk 2.2, Thompson, Meier, Barkov, etc I don't know. Most of the game is about cycling, puck protection, puck battles on the boards, in the corners, behind the net and battles on the slot.
And this knock not only about him. Im glad I saw more defensive physicaliy game from Casey. And I like his skating more.

20 years ago a guy like Hutson would not be a defender he’d be a winger. The game is changjng and they can get by now even if the smaller defenders are limited in their own zone.

Yeah I think there’s a tendency by some to pick apart small D more if they have poor defense while some bigger D who can’t move the puck as well or contribute offensively can slide by a little more. I guess it’s because people see a defenseman’s job being to “defend” whereas I see it more as your net contribution. I think we also saw with our own team how bigger D can get brutalized by strong cycle and forecheck teams just like smaller D can. Our worst D against the Canes were our bigger D (granted our smaller D still weren’t small). The smaller D struggle because of the physical side and the bigger D struggle because of the puck skill side

Hutson will be an NHL player I think, based solely on his smarts and puck abilities which will give him a place driving offense, but I do think his lack of both size and elite skating means he’s gonna give some of that back going the other way.

Doesn’t mean he won’t be good, doesn’t mean he won’t be play a bunch of games and score a bunch of points, it just puts a cap on how valuable he can be.

It is working on paper. In the game it is not in meaningful games. Lever is a thing. Modern defenseman should be strong enough, physical enough, mobile and good in transition. He should be very productive, we can see Hamilton and Graves against Carolina, but we could see defensemen of the type Hisch13r is trying to praise, but they svck in real games. Defense is about defense - positional game, board battles, game in the corners, game against the cycling and transitional game. If defenseman can't move fast especially withbhis first steps, he will lose even if he is big, if defenseman can't win puck battles or push away net driving, he will lose even if he is great skater and contributor.
And team should forecheck together. Defense is working only by the full line, its not about 2 defensemen. Hutson will be fun. To play against. But he should make enough impact in offensive zone potentially.

He said it prior to the start of last season.
Someone else already explained that it was 'in the next two years' so that makes a bit more sense than just saying that this offseason about next year lol

Ultimately the reason why Hutson is likely to be limited is that he’s both tiny and not an elite skater. You can be an elite defenseman with one of those issues but it’s very hard to have both. Fox is probably the closest, but he’s still waaaaay bigger than Hutson.

Quinn works (and he really does, he’s an elite defenseman) because even though he’s small and not great in puck battles or in front of the net, he skates so well that his transition game advantages just absolutely overpower his negatives going the other way. If you can get the puck out of your zone and into the opponents zone essentially on demand, you’re going to be a really good NHL player, more or less regardless of whatever else happens (and he’s also good at other offensive things).

I don’t think Quinn is all that great without the puck. His skating will help him in most situations though. Puck retrieval and moving it out of thr zone as you’ve said. It’s hard to dump and chase against him because he will generally win the chase and you won’t be able to hit him because he will skate away before he’s caught. That said he’s never going to scare anyone in the slot or crease or along the boards. Given all the things he can contribute I doubt the Canucks are that worried about his flaws. My guess is Hutson can carve out an NHL role where he is a great PP QB and plays with a great defender on a second pair at some point. I am skeptical he will be as good as the stat watchers expect though.

The level he gets to will be really interesting. At the college level he is completely gamebreaking offensively. Maxing on all of the goals, primary assists, ixG, slot assists, and slot passes is unheard of. Him being quite literally off the chart good and being even better offensively than guys like Quinn and Luke at the college level could mean that even if he can’t reach the heights he’s hitting now he could still be a Quinn level player in the NHL despite the size and skating limitations since his starting point is so high. With no exaggeration those look like generational offensive Dman stats which he obviously won’t hit because of the skating and size limitations but he could still be elite offensively

If you’re a small defender, you need to either be an elite skater, elite puck handler, or elite at reading the play defensively.

If one skill set is elite, one is average, and one is above average, you can get by in this league. If any of those skill sets are below average, you aren’t going to last long in this league.
