They seem to love Foote so I doubt he's waived. Clarke and Holtz are exempt. Bastian's not going down. Not going to lose any sleep over any of the others

Thompson will most likely hit waivers - will be interesting to see if Buffalo or any other teams claim him. Tierney should clear.

I do. Boqvist was more or less a warm body.

Disagree, Boqvist played fine. He got rag dolled up and down the lineup and then was a fixture on one of the of the better lines last year heading into the playoffs with Palat/Haula then they had to destroy that line to help Timo acclimate a little better and never went back to it at any point afterwards.

Really don't get letting go Boqvist over McLeod or Bastian at this point.
Those players play a completely different role than Boq. You think he would have done a better job on the fourth line than either of them?

This is the same pearl clutching people did about Urbom, Rykov, {insert random below average player under the age of 25 that was let go some time in the past of your choice}.

I would’ve liked to keep Boqvist around, but i think both he and his agent know he’s capable of handling more responsibilities than he was ever gonna get on a team as stacked as the Devils.

TBH i think Fitz left him unqualified as a favor. Even if he hits a new gear with Boston like Zacha did (:sarcasm:), he won’t really be filling a role that isn’t already covered (with backup) on the Devils.

Agree, although what I'm saying is one of Foote, Lazar, Tierney, Nosek could end up on the waiver wire (although with one way contracts I'm skeptical, but still... )

No, it's not. Those players never went on to have NHL careers. Boqvist is an NHL-level player, he is not a body, nor is he a prospect, but he's a player of limited utility. He may flourish elsewhere, but I doubt it.

So here's where I'm seeing things

Meier-Hughes-Mercer
Bratt-Hischier-Toffoli

Any combination of these 6.
Then:

Palat-Haula-Holtz/Clarke

Fourth line gets interesting and depends on this investigation.

Nosek-McLeod-Bastian is the strongest combination. It also gives the team the ability to move Nosek and McLeod up and down in the lineup in certain situations for faceoffs.

If this signing means McLeod is a goner:

Foote-Nosek-Bastian/Lazar
Tierney

I REALLY hope McLeod is cleared because a fourth line of Nosek-McLeod-Bastian and the ability to move Nosek and McLeod around based on faceoff need is a really good thing.

Boqvist is unquestionably a better player than either of those guys, and I could see him having a respectable journeyman career a lá Jarnkrok or Athanasiou or any of those disappointing Red Wings picks.

But i agree with your general point that we won’t end up missing him as much as we might think right now. And given he’s 24 with almost 200 NHL games, it’s not hard to assume we’ve already seen exactly what type of player he is.

Well, first off, Boqvist is a legit NHLer as opposed to the two guys you randomly brought up. And yes, I rather much keep a guy who's shown to play at a decent level in a higher role than those two guys especially Bastian.

You’re definitely too low on Nate but yes Bo is a more than serviceable bottom 6er who was solid defensive forward last year and should’ve been brought back

I’m guessing Foote and Holtz will be battling for the 3rd line wing spot with likely Haula and Palat?

Timo-Nico-Mercer
Bratt-Jack-Toffoli
Palat-Haula-Foote/Holtz
Nosek-McLeod-Bastian

Nosek to 4C and Foote to 4LW after Holtz (hopefully) establishes himself and McLeod is banished

Seems very possible. We have a ton of options with the forward lines. There’s still even a chance Haula sticks with his buddy Jack and the lines shake out completely different.

Someone needs to set this guy straight regarding the distinction between 4th line and bottom 6.

Anyone? Anyone?

God please let the Haula-Hughes experiment be dead. If they do go with that do they move Mercer back to the middle? There’s no longer a guy like Boqvist to just toss in as 3C to tread water. Gimme Suter already and especially if Lindy can’t let that pair die

Haula Jack Tafolli
Timo Nico Bratt
Palat McLeod Mercer
Foote Nosek Bastian

Holtz back to Utica.
I don't think we want McLeod as a regular 3rd line center.

So... we basically "traded" with Boston, Boqvist for Nosek? :)

Let's hope it goes as well as getting Haula.

Oh... while Boqvist brings a bit more skill, Nosek brings size, and we're trying to be a "harder team to play against".
I think this is exactly right. Nosek is more the style we need from a 13th/14th forward than Boqvist is.

I also think this means we're not going to be trading for a goaltender to start the season.

There should’ve been room for both a Boqvist and a Nosek. I’d rather have Boqvist than Tierney.

Ya. I'd go Nosek at 3C and McLeod at 4C.

That’s even worse. Nosek is all defense. McLeod’s far from a good 3C but at least he can skate well and playmake some
