Devils team discussion (news, notes and speculation) - 2023 offseason part II

This is a strange place during an offseason when we don't suck
Nostalgic about the bad times, I dig it.

Kovalchuk was the most electrifying moment type of player we had for a looooong time until Jack arrived. By electrifying moment type of player I mean that when he picked up the puck in our end or in the NZ and he carried the puck and walk a defenseman or whatever you'd inch closer to the edge of your seat hoping to see something awesome and he delivered a lot of times.

I liked Merrill and his game. He's not in the same category as the Tyler Eckfords and Matt Correntes of the world. (Or Reese Scarlett or Brandon Burlon or or or)

Tyler Eckford was a 7th rounder and a #217 overall. That fact that he had a 6 year AHL career after years in college and 2 NHL games is not at all. Was a fan of Tyler

Similarly Reese Scarlett was a 6th rounder and a 157th overall...he managed to carve out a 7 year AHL career before heading to to the KHL..

Kinda strange to pick on a #217 and #157 on the heels of such greats as Ty Smith and Reilly Walsh
.

Eckford was a fine pro, but in an organization that was drafting and developing well, he would not have been thought of as much of a prospect.

I knew I forgot names in the heaping trash pile.

ryder, brunner, tootoo, tlusty, stafford, grabner, andreas johnsson?!! .....all absolute garbage.

hated every one of these signings the second they happened... they had zero chance to get in my good book right from the beginning.

.........and i was 100% f***ing right about each and every one of those chumps

And I'd be consistent and be first to admit that I ate the largest crow possible on Smith.

God, he was such a f***ing tank. I know it's a hot topic with Jack now but Kovy as a player overall might be the most gifted player we've seen. Him, Jack, Mogliny in some order. Think Jack eventually jumps him in the future.
On some level Niedermayer made it look so effortless.

I vividly remember the fans on here and NJdevs jumping for joy when we got him back from Washington.
I legit forgot we ever got him back, I guess cause he only played in Albany in '13-14. Lou loved his second-tour guys though...you could start a puckdoku of them. Rolston, Claude, Arnott, Sykora and the cult heroes like Salmela.

For the record, just in case it wasn't clear I meant NJDevs the OTHER Devils message board not NJDevs26 the poster.

Probably an oversight on my part.

Lou had his fetishes with some players

Specifically camalleri and clowe

It was report he tried to trade for both in years prior to their free agent signings

I also remember everyone freaking out about losing urbom on waivers too

LOL I didn't think you meant me (or even really see that part of the post tbh), especially since I was amused at all the hand-wringing over losing Urbom on waivers to begin with. That and the freakout over trading Rykov are the two classic HF being HF meltdowns.

Bringing in Rob Niedermayer should also be mentioned.

Don't forget Shanahan. Lou certainly didn't.

17 years between stints, goddam!

there was on air broadcast talking about it during a game a while back.... 20 something? it's nuts whatever the number is .....and he's not done yet on the island

He might match that number over there yet.

That doesn't even count guys like Johnny Mac, who never came back as a player but came back post-playing. Steve Sullivan was almost as long in between stints as Shanny too, we got him before and after he was a good player lol. Mogilny came back, Malakhov, freaking Richer came back my goodness...
