Should be noted he outplayed OK, which I think played into OK being traded.

If OK outplayed Bahl, it may have been Bahl that was going the other way.

I'm not sure. We had a few clear untouchable prospects/young NHLers while the Meier trade was being negotiated (Luke, Mercer, Nemec, maybe Casey). I doubt Bahl was one of them, so he was probably available.

So it may have been SJ's choice to take Okhotyuk, if they rated him as the better player. Our evaluation of their relative value may not have entered into it.

Maybe, either way, in the minds of Devils mgmt, Bahl was higher up the depth chart.

Due to Okhotiuk’s later birthday, Bahl is only 5 months older and Bahl has 47 NHL GP (23 GP in 2022-23) vs NO’s 15 NHL GP (10 GP in 2022-23).

I get why people like Okhotiuk but a lefty defensive defenseman with no scoring and no real size advantage will have a tougher time sticking in the NHL.

Okhotiuk’s last game in the AHL was in 2/11, he was injured at some point and had core muscle surgery in April (what old timers know as a sports hernia).

I would be pretty surprised if the organization doesn't view him as a long-term piece, but I suppose we might want to see more before making a commitment. I'd be tempted to go for a long-term contract at at ~$2M AAV, though, because I think that'll be a bargain in two years.

It's much easier to do this sort of thing a few years ago when the Devils were way below the salary cap and so making low-risk bets on a young D wouldn't jeopardize anyone better, but we're no longer in that position. The Devils basically have already spent the upcoming cap increase on everything else - it's going to go to Mercer, Luke, and paying a goalie more money - that means minimizing a guy like Bahl's salary as much as possible, and hopefully replacing him with a player of similar cost when he gets too expensive.

We haven't seen much of Bahl away from Severson, by far the best partner he's likely to ever have on a third pairing. I like what I saw out of him last season but I'd be surprised if the Devils saw enough to commit to him.

Curious to see where Seamus Casey fits in the management’s plans.

There’s certainly a clog on the right side right now and he’s a few years away, but he’s a very good player. He has NJD ties, so I’m not too worried he’ll look elsewhere, just wondering what the plan is with him.

One area where Bahl could prove this upcoming season to have significantly more value then he currently does coming off this past season is on the PK. I guess it's still kind of a risk in that either he handles the role or Smith get's the minutes, but there is a chunk of PK minutes that is going to open up next season.

With Sieg's and Hughes, he's just not going to get much of a chance to prove he's anything more then a 3rd pairing guy 5v5(though maybe that changes when Nemec establishes himself), but if he can prove effective on the PK, he could earn some money there.

Again, I really don't know contracts, especially with young guys and RFA years, and arbitration, but in general, even a 3rd pairing guy, if they can contribute to the PK, they'll be well above $1mil.

That said, I don't think I've seen enough from Bahl to lock him up longer term at this point. Let's see a full season, and a stronger playoffs before making that call.

I would be ok locking. him up long term.. I think he is gonna be a really good 2nd pairing guy for us this season.. but he will be slotted 5/6 so he should have a really good season. if you can lock him in for 3/4 year deal at 2 mil its worth it

2 more years at Michigan are likely I'd think.

Obviously someone on the right side would need to go. I tend to think it's Casey, but maybe that is when they look to trade Hamilton, who at that point would have 3 years remaining.

After next year you need to think long and hard as to what the options are.

Completely random to the discussion here but with the depth signings the Islanders just made, Parise is probably retiring but if he has the itch to play one more year, how can you not do it if you're Fitz at 800k?
I'm on the hater side of the Parise spectrum, but he scored 21 goals last year which is pretty amazing really. Good shot rate too.

Would have to consider it.

Has Casey ever played on the left side? That might help eventually.

Yeah, it's mostly nostalgia driven. Have to wonder how much of Parise's production is playing in the top 6/9 at times for one of the more anemic offenses in the league but would be a cool story to see him come back to a contender but would seem very NBAish for him to do lol

Casey is useful prospect depth until he forces his way into the lineup. I guess if he spends two more years at Michigan and the right side in NJ is locked up for a few years he might decide to spend a 4th year at Michigan and go UFA. That would be bad, but not worth hindering the team's competitiveness in any way to address. They'd likely trade him in that scenario for a 2nd if he keeps trending as he has been.

Would need Nemec to be the 1RD at that time and then integrate Casey as the 3RD. Pretty sure Marino is up for an extension + new deal around that time as well.

Marino has 4 years left, so should be some movement there before then.

Gotcha, wasn't sure and didn't have the chance look at cap friendly before making the comment lol. Yeah in that case, you probably expect big raises for Nemec + Marino. Dougie trade would make sense to keep that RHD number low. Also never know what happens till then in regards to getting other guys via trade, etc. RHD went from Severson and PK top 4 in 2020 to one of the best units in 2023.

100%. I expect Nemec to take a year off his ELC this season so he’d need an extension the year before Marino. Luke and Nemec separated by 1 year actually helps here imo.

The best case scenario is a defensemen we draft work out so we don’t have to re-sign a 30 year old UFA Marino. Or you trade for a replacement.

But that‘a a long time from now, so who knows.

Exactly for as long as he wants to play at $800,000 with a yearly contract keep signing. Just imagine if the Devils won a Cup and he was on the team. He has been chasing it.
