If I could pick and choose a realistic forward for 3rw or just a 3rd liner , I’d want Fast or someone like him. A Neiderrieder type guy but they are about 1-1.5 mil too much for we have left for cap so an internal ELC I think is the way to go. Use cap room for Helle or Ullmark .
I agree with most that a fast skating physical forward who is tenacious on the forecheck and good along the boards / cycle / win loose puck battles would be ideal but I think an elite goalie would be more of an overall upgrade .

Re-signed in Carolina already.

If NJ can accrue a lot of cap space by the trade deadline they will be in great position to really bolster their lineup. With Bahl signed and two more forwards on the roster that should leave them around 3 million which becomes arojnd 15 million at the trade deadline day.

We should all pray on the downfall of the Blues and hope that Vrana lights it up this year, he's a UFA in 2024 and would become a damn good rental. Pretty sure we've all wanted him for the longest time on this board. He'd by number 1 deadline target if the net issue is fixed. Also wouldn't mind Duclair from SJ since they'll be abysmal and he'll probably want to go to a contender to boost his future day as a UFA.

I keep forgetting about Lazar lol. He's obviously the guy that's going to be there to push Foote for the 4th line LW role and alternate out based on matchups, rest, and what not as the 13th forward. We just need a PTO or vet to compete with Holtz in the 3rd line RW spot. Ideally someone that can also man that 4th line LW spot if need be. Hmm.
There’s really not much out there. Here’s a list that might have some appeal - it’s not pretty.

Heinen
Sundqvist
Suter (probably too expensive)
Comtois
Malgin
Gurianov
Foegele (supposedly available but makes too much compared to what he brings)

Would be nice to get someone who can play center in a pinch since we’re losing that utility role that Boqvist served but only Suter and Sundqvist really fit that description.

Sure. We're likely looking at a PTO for camp to push Holtz and Foote and be a potential PK option. Maybe someone like Zach Aston-Reese. Obviously not ideal for the 3rd line but not a lot of 3rd line stuff left out there, as you pointed out.

We're probably saving space for in-season moves or a goalie upgrade. I pointed out on another site that the issue becomes with giving guaranteed money up to a forward is if Foote and Holtz earn their spots, you've got a 14th forward with guaranteed money that you could've saved or allocated somewhere else. If Foote doesn't earn his spot in camp, you're still in a weird spot with him not being waiver eligible, if you like him. You can initially put him in Utica but once inevitable injuries happen, you're stuck if you call him back up. You can call up Thompson and risk him to waivers or you can call up Clarke since he's waiver eligible as other options but Foote makes things tricky by not being waiver eligible himself.

In the end, I think our forward move will just end up being a camp body PTO and, if we get to a point where Holtz and/or Foote prove not to be viable options, we'll make those moves when it comes to it. Right now, there's no real reason to allocate resources until we absolutely have to.

Remember that Fitz does not seem to be a fan of deadline trades, Meier move notwithstanding.

And I think he made that deal in rather large part due to his comfort in that being a long term move

He'll be 22 in January and is a former 7th overall pick. If they don't at least view him as a favorite for a roster spot at this point then they'd have traded him while he still has value.

That could still come to fruition this offseason

Eh hard to make presumptions just yet. We're finally seeing what Fitz does with a contender. He's an opportune guy. He's not going to make moves for the sake of making them, for certain, but we're not going to punt the TDL because of a preference. That flexibility will be huge either way.

The comments were mostly about how difficult it is to get a player up to speed, fit into a new system, and even the off the ice challenges of moving. Even with an elite talent like Meier, there was a pretty big adjustment period.

I’m sure he’ll make a move if it makes sense, but it seems like he’d rather have all his guys in place well before the deadline.

I think he's mentioned it before that's why the point is being brought up. It's not totally off base either, this is arguably one of the harder teams to jump to mid season with the amount of sheer speed we have. If you're a rental, you're probably coming from a team with mediocrity around you to begin with.

Sure, LIS, he's not going to make a move just to make one but he's also not going to punt the TDL because of a preference. He'll do as he's done and find what he feels is the right fit and run with it. If there's an opportunity to trade for someone with term at the deadline with that accrued space, there's no reason to think he wouldn't put his hat in the mix.

Right which is why I mentioned a guy like Vrana. Fitz could get him next year and then offer him a contract once Toffoli departs if the playoff run goes well. Root for the Blues being bad lol

I don't foresee us targeting a scoring winger like Vrana or Duclair any time soon. Meier, Bratt, Toffoli, Mercer and Palat gives you 5 proven scorers at the NHL level on the wing and Holtz, Clarke and Foote are all interesting prospects who can score. If we add anybody to the forward group it will probably be a player that bring something other than scoring.

I forgot about former Coyotes 3rd rounder / New Jersey native John Farinacci who'll be a UFA next month since he didn't want to sign with them. He'll still have to sign a two year ELC so perhaps we'd be in the running? Although I could also see Boston being aggressive after Farinacci and Jay O'Brien to fill out their AHL club as well.

Toffoli is UFA after next year, I 100% don't want him to be signed to some absurd number even if he's doing well unless he takes a massive discount which I doubt he will because he already has the Cup to his name and probably wants to end his career with a big payday. Vrana move wouldn't be for 2023-2024 but more so 2024-2025

I wouldn't be so sure Toffoli wouldn't take a discount. Apparently he doesn't want to move around and his agent immediately wanted to talk extension with Fitz.

If Vrana has a good season he's also going to want a big contract. Either way the Devils would have to pay Mercer and start saving money for Luke, Nemec and any other young players that earn raises in the next couple of seasons.

We have a lot of money committed now (to young players thankfully) and in the future so our offseason flexibility will be important. Point being, I believe Fitz legitimately wants to see how TT fits with the team.

I wonder if at this point bringing back Tatar for 1 year at 3 mill is realistic. The longer he goes unsigned, the more of a possibility and there are not really at this point any more feasible options other then sticking with Holtz/Foote to fill in a few roster spots. It will put us right against the cap limit (which is always the case for contending teams), but it's doable. He would slide right into the 3rd line RW spot and can be moved around in the lineup. With the all the 1 year contracts we see being shelled out, I wonder if Fitz circles back to him as one final depth forward piece.

I think we'll only have about 1.5m in cap space after signing Bahl unless we go with a 22 man roster. Actually, more like 2.5 cause we'd be sending Holtz down.
