Actually, our limit is probably closer to 1.5M after re-signing Bahl.
More like $1 million. Say Bahl gets 900k, then someone like Clarke grabs a roster spot, swap VV for Hellebuyck and sign $1 million forward that leaves you a 22 man roster with about $77k left. That would mean a lot of roster juggling having to go one man short of the max roster (although Smith technically being able to play forward and defense helps).

Why there probably won’t be a depth signing until later in the offseason after they wait teams out on a goalie. Though looking at the cap situation they either trade for a cheaper goalie or there is some minimal retention on the other side.

we need a physical guy that can punch faces if need be

Pius suter is going to cost way too much. 27 year old, middle six center with good defensive metrics are not going to be had for peanuts. Anybody the Devils' are looking at is likely to be a 1 year deal with low AAV or PTOs.

If I could pick and choose a realistic forward for 3rw or just a 3rd liner , I’d want Fast or someone like him. A Neiderrieder type guy but they are about 1-1.5 mil too much for we have left for cap so an internal ELC I think is the way to go. Use cap room for Helle or Ullmark .
I agree with most that a fast skating physical forward who is tenacious on the forecheck and good along the boards / cycle / win loose puck battles would be ideal but I think an elite goalie would be more of an overall upgrade .

I keep forgetting about Lazar lol. He's obviously the guy that's going to be there to push Foote for the 4th line LW role and alternate out based on matchups, rest, and what not as the 13th forward. We just need a PTO or vet to compete with Holtz in the 3rd line RW spot. Ideally someone that can also man that 4th line LW spot if need be. Hmm.

Pending any additional moves, I kind of wonder if Bastian is on the third line as it is

Foote - Mikey - Lazar on the 4th line with a third line of like Palat - Haula - Bastian?

Nah, I don't think we're counting on Lazar in a full-time role. Check what I just posted on FF.

I don't think there's anyway that they don't see Holtz as the favorite for that 3rd line spot.

If NJ can accrue a lot of cap space by the trade deadline they will be in great position to really bolster their lineup. With Bahl signed and two more forwards on the roster that should leave them around 3 million which becomes arojnd 15 million at the trade deadline day.
