Our goaltending and defensive scheme has been horrible this year but I feel like trading anything substantial for a 34 year old goalie with 2 more years left will age very poorly. It screams of a PK situation where it will be clear (after thought) that we paid to essentially take on the bad years of a teams contract.

I think I'm ok with standing pat for now, given the exorbitant asking price, the emergence of Daws, and the fact that Vanecek has been sidelined with a mystery injury.

But this is the sort of thing that could come back to bite us in a hurry if Daws turns back into a pumpkin, Schmid can't get his mojo back, and it turns out that our best option is the guy with the worst SV% in the league.

Fitz needs to play his cards very carefully for the next month until the deadline. He could easily come out of this blamed for wasting a season if he chooses incorrectly.

no one should be mad at fitz if he trades for markstrom and it doesn't work out for whatever reason. he is at least attempting to fix the problem. he should get blame if he doesn't trade for markstrom and the bolded happens

he went the cheap fix route bringing vitek here. he then figured to give the duo another shot this summer both of which are fine but its clearly a problem so if he doesn't fix it and nico isn't ready and he doesn't trade for a goalie now? man thats bad gm

Its Bad GMing if he pays what CGY want and wastes assets unless we win something this year.

There is ZERO interest in Markstrom if thats the price. Walk away and live with the results

Yeah, at minimum I’m guessing that’s Conroy wanting at least Holtz + 1st round pick for a 34 year old Markstrom retained.

Lol. Get F-ed
first round pick is nothing for a goalie to help win now. i dont really care about picking # 23 whatever year it is.

thats fine then dont call for him to be fired when we run back vitek or someone similar in the summer and we are right back here next season

I have never and will never call for him to be fired for that. He built an incredible young core which has barely started their contending window.

If you want to close that window ASAP then you make trades like that for Markstrom

Nobody told me there'd be days like these...

If it was as simple as that it would have been done already. Calgary wanted two first round equivalents and we don't know if that was with or without retention. Maybe they'd want three for that.

trading holtz and a first to go from bottom of the nhl goaltending to good goaltending is a window closing move?

Yes, if it backfires. You dont just waste assets on a goalie that you dont know will move the needle.

Hes 34 and makes way to much money. That is two 1st round pick equivalents, you do not give that up for a 34 year old

Even if so, the market for goalies has quickly become barren. We can afford to wait it out and get a better deal.

We are like the only team left "in the market" for a goalie with 6+ goalies available. Not over paying for any goalie, especially if we arent 100% making the playoffs this year

holtz isn't even moving the needle now on the team and some 16 year old isn't moving the needle next year or the year after.

what goalie is available for that price then? which btw i'm sure would probably require more

That same 16 year old can be dealt at the draft for actual asseets who improve the team. Holtz is very good and if given ice time can def move the needle at an ELC price

Goalie prices are going down not up right now. There is ZERO contenders that need a goalie aside from maybe us// (CAR, EDM and even TOR have figured it out) and there is like 7 goalies rumored on the block. Someone will budge

if that was to happen im sure the devils will find a way to keep their window open minus holtz and whatever first round pick they lose. markstrom would have to be vitek level bad for this season to duplicate itself maybe that happens? more then likely it won't

and you guys calm me negative lol.

Makes no sense at all for a team on the bubble to trade young cheap assets for 34 year old goaltender....it can't be justified at all

what happens if their goalies implode in the playoffs? think they will sit by in the summer and not fix the issue?

i'm not going to do the song and dance on markstrom again i think hes a better fit for the timeline
he wont be as expensive to get and only minimal contract length give the job to nico

you want to go saros? fine but the ask will be absolutely more and then hes going to want a 7 year 8 million contract. thats fine with me too i dont care either options is fine with me but i can see a lot of people not wanting to pay that price for saros and then give him that bag.

Exactly.

This isn’t the year to trade assets just to sneak in

its going to be more then just for this year. its not like an 8th place team has ever done anything in the playoffs :eyeroll:
