Ryan Whitney of Spittin Chiclets bet one of the camera dudes $3000 that Jack wouldn't hit the 100 point mark in the next three years starting with last season.

Whit might have goofed
He'll hit 100 points by Christmas at this rate.

It's great that Jack has taken off to the moon but some of those early criticism of his game just weren't wrong...

There were a lot of deficiencies in his game that lingered for quite a while. And for a couple of years in the NHL those deficiencies were easy to see. My personal view is he simply didn't belong in the league in 2020 and perhaps even 2021. Those two years many of the criticisms were absolutely being validated. Jack definitely deserves his accolades but this was a pretty long process and it was probably made longer and more arduous by the pandemic which threw everything out of wack.

In my view the mistake of the analysis that we want to laugh about now were more about Kakko than Jack...it was two fold, an over estimation of Kakko's ability and an underestimation of Jack's projection. Most people widely believed Kakko was going to be a high to elite level player, most saw elite attributes and I can't remember many or really any that disagreed predraft that Kakko was going to be "a player to build around"

The general consensus back then would have been its more of a surprise that Kakko 4 years after his draft hasn't cracked 40 points than it is that Jack had 99. Many if not most said Kakko will be good sooner but Jack will be the better player.

Hey guys, for my fashionista fantasy league, I know Hughes has gotten a few points or whatever those are called but I’m really concerned about this jacket he’s wearing. I’ve dropped Hughes to pick up Mercer.

I don’t even want advice I’m just telling you about a Hughes weakness out of now where because I’m a fun person.

Listening to Evan and Tiki from the other day and they were talking the biggest rivalries in the metro area.

And they brought up a point regarding the Devils-Rags and Isles Rags rivalries that I thought was interesting, though now that I'm writing it, it sounds kind of obvious. And the point was, from the Rag's standpoint, the bigger rivalry depends on where you live. If you live in NJ, the Devils are the bigger rivalry, and if you live on LI (Does this include Brooklyn and Queens?) then it's the Isles.

Now that doesn't consider if you live in Manhattan, or north of NYC, and as I said, seems obvious, but something I had never really considered before.

I don't think there was ever a time where Jack didn't belong in the league. Sure he had struggles in year 1, but those struggles highlighted what he had to work on. And maybe for a less confident player(Kakko?) that year season could have hurt his development. But he does not lack for confidence, and in fact he is pretty defiant in the face of struggles.

Year 2 I just don't see an argument for him not belonging in the league. Aside from "he's a #1 pick and should be producing more" which I don't think is a great argument.

Scrolling from bottom up, my first thought on that Jack pic was "not a good look with that jacket".

Of course, he'll probably make it the new trend.

Not digging the shoe-pant combo either.

Would rather Luke instead. The youngest is always the flyest. Mercer finally bought a new shirt (new contract on the way)

'Perhaps even 2021?' Laughable. Jack Hughes in 2020-21 controlled play on a garbage team. His top forward linemates that year were, in order, Sharangovich, Kuokkanen, Palmieri, Johnsson, and Bratt. 2 of those guys are out of the NHL, and the other 2 are third liners. He had a 61% xG with Bratt. This is a player you think 'shouldn't have been in the NHL'. He would've absolutely annihilated any other (reasonable) league on the planet.

The thing that was obvious about Jack even from the earliest days was how well he saw the ice. It took him some time to figure out exactly how to translate that into offense. Sorry you couldn't see it happening, because it was a lot of fun to watch - admittedly, some of it was marred by people who couldn't see it, but that's my fault for being here. And also admittedly, most of you guys saw it.

Ya, Kakko vs Hughes was already on the board, Jim just contributed to the discussion.

I think he is wrong regarding his "Hughes early career" take.

But he is correct that a large part of why Hughes vs Kakko is now so one sided is that Kakko has way underperformed expectations. I don't think anyone expected a decent 3rd liner.

You say little things all the time hoping to get a rise out of people and usually do, today you tried to make a point but couldn't help throwing in one of your lines that do exactly that. It worked. If you want to have discussions, don't put poison pills in your rants and get all hurt when people disregard everything else you said.

I typically hate when people grab low hanging fruit of an otherwise long thought out post to discredit everything else because they actually don't have a retort to it. But you did it on purpose. This is on you.

Jack vs. Kakko was in part dependent on how you viewed the league going forward.

McDavid getting hacked to death was never going to stand. It was already moving to a transition, speed oriented game before 2019. Part of why I think Barzal caught the league off guard and why MacKinnon and Kucherov started to wreck the league with numbers we hadn’t seen since the early 90s. Benn winning the art Ross with 89 pts was the top on the big boy trend I think.

It’s a tough call on Jack at 18, he would’ve torched the AHL, which is a dumber league. Take a look at Holtz, a much lesser player who did his thing quite easily at that level. Everything he has to learn is at this level.

I don’t think I’d change the trajectory. And those years didn’t matter anyway - the division was a butcher shop with WAS, PIT, NYI and CAR all way more experienced, deeper and more talented. The timing right now is perfect - old guard is fading fast and all the younger rising teams have more structural and cultural issues than we do.

This team gets a Sorokin level talent in net and it’s over.
