Damon has been with the Devils for how long now? (*looked* IT'S 6 SEASONS!!)

He's a long-time Vet.

Not a wet-behind-the-ears rookie.

mistakes happen players f up its happened to everyone on the roster just really weird how big of a situation this has become lol.

That 13-14 team wasnt very good (they werent as bad as some of the future teams) but it was very likeable team non results wise and looking at the name list I would agree with my memory.
That was a season tanked on Schneider being just the 1a, while Brodeur was the 1b, as well as all the shootout losses. And if I'm really gonna microscope it even more as far as head to head matchups go, our PATHETIC head to head matchup against Columbus could have also been a big difference, as I think they barely got in and they had 5 more points than we did.

That team should have made the playoffs, but I don't think it should have went very far. And by very far I mean more than 1 win.

Unless of course Schneider stole some games or a series.

Severson hate is always a bit unhinged. He makes a dumb play every 5 games or so that sticks in everyone's memories and always causes them to look past all the other minutes where he plays well. It's not like the other Devils vets were mistake free in the Flyers game. Haula took one of the dumbest penalties I've seen to put the Devils on a 5 on 3, Graves turned over the puck in the 3rd period to Farabee which would have given Farabee a breakaway but Farabee slipped and fell by himself so no one remembers that lol.

Don’t mind the benching, need to set an example that this team is in a different spot than years past and stuff like that won’t be tolerated

Guys like holtz have been benched for far less

Is it confirmed that he is actually scratched tonight? Or is it an educated guess based on him skating as the extra defenseman in practice?

I think just an educated guess.

The morning skate was an optional one and usually those are the only indication as to who will be in and out of the lineup or what goalie is the starter, as Ruff usually doesn't give answers to lineups after morning skates or the day before, but he has a couple of times in his tenure, but it's very rare.

You know what I just did before posting? I had gathered like ten names of very likeable guys from that team, both goalies included but I cleared it cause I was so sure that "Bleed will appear out of nowhere like a shiny Charizard to tell me how Marty shouldnt have played that much and then give a storytime that people would argue that he was getting Ws and Cory wasnt" so I didnt.

I find it fascinating how the Sevs defenders never seem to connect the dots on why his particular dumb plays stick in everyone’s memories.

its not defending, why do you not remember the other plays he has? Do you think the coaching staff is sending out a guy for 20min a night if they don't trust him?

He is just an unlikeable player IMO
Guy seems completely unphased in the post game. Then the next day when his coach threatens to bench him he claims he takes responsibility and won’t make the same mistake again. Then we find out he “likes” a tweet that basically excuses what he did.

He’s not genuinely contrite about making a stupid play that lost the game, and he isn’t gonna fix shit. If it wasn’t for the lack of depth options at RD, I’d say ship his ass out now for whatever you can get.

Do you think people just randomly selected him to remember his bad plays more than everyone else’s? Or could the more reasonable explanation be that people remember his mistakes more than everyone else’s because the egregiousness and regularity of them is significantly worse?

If we graded every mistake our players make on scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worst, Damon would have the most 10’s out of anyone on this team. I have absolutely zero doubt about this.

They are usually more egregious but there is very little regularity. They are actually rare. When was the last one? How many like that has he had this season before that? 2-3 max if that.

He’s a good player who kills his reputation by the occasional terrible looking and sometimes costly mistake.

I said he has bad mistakes (dumb plays), but he plays well most of the time and that's why the coaching staff still plays him as much as they do even though they have options now with guys like Hamilton and Marino which they didn't a couple seasons ago. It's why management has kept him all these years when he easily could have been moved (mid 20's RHD on a good cap hit).

You remember all the bad plays bc his are pretty egregious compared to others but they are not as often as ppl make it seem.

if severson only made a dumb play every 5 games, nobody would ever talk about him
It’s less than every 5 games. When was the last mistake like that? It’s literally not even every 5 games. Just looks bad when it happens and blows up because they’re always very egregious. Obviously smaller mistakes like every one else more often but bad ones like that are rare.

Someone else actually said that he hasn’t even had a giveaway in 10 games either.

I counter that question with these. Who was the last player to make a mistake that egregious and when did it happen?

How often do the other players on this team make that irresponsible of a play in those circumstances?

You can watch last game and see that Haula put the Devils on a 5 on 3 with a really bad penalty when the game was tied. Does it not count as stupid because the Devils PK was able to bail him out?

I honestly thought that was a shot the goalie could have stopped. He looked very awkward on that goal, like an 80's goalie.

I mean on the Severson giveaway goal in question.

Lol of course. Those questions are completely besides the point. I literally said that Severson’s big mistakes are usually more egregious. So I answered your questions before you asked it. You obviously just couldn’t answer my questions.

No one’s disagreeing that Severson makes really egregious mistakes. They just aren’t very regular at all and all the good stuff he does on a shift but shift basis and the value he provides far outweighs the occasional terrible mistake. Like he’s a really good player who occasionally makes a really bad mistake.

Can we start are Severson egregious mistake thread where we can actually track how often that kind of stuff happens? I think people would find it to be very inactive and then blowup for a few days every 2-3 months.

They don’t happen very often. People keep suggesting they’re happening regularly but I don’t think those people could tell me when the last one happened. Because it wasn’t recently.
