Devils team discussion (news, notes and speculation) - 2022-23 season thread part III

The Severson discussion is funny to me. He's the same guy he's always been.

I do think the Devils should trade Severson, but:
- I think that can't happen until close to the trade deadline (no teams have space)
- I think losing Severson will make the team worse

I just think the team isn't going to be a Cup contender this year and should still be still thinking of acquiring assets.

The other option is to trade Graves. But I think it's much harder for the Devils to replace LD2 (with Smith or Bahl) vs RD3 (with Smith).

I mean, nah. Contract sucks. Even with retention, the Devils' don't want the term.

This is going to be Palat's job. We have to wait for him to get back.
I'd love Henrique at 50%. Perhaps even without retention. I doubt Tatar re-signs for 1 or 2 years, and I think anything more is too much term for Tatar. Rico basically replaces Tatar next year.

Media coverage over the years gives me that impression. It's my opinion, I'm not stating it's a fact.
I'm sure they are shopping him but will other teams bite knowing he will be on the FA market this summer. That's the million dollar question? He may be gone by the deadline but he will surely be gone for nothing by years end!

I think I was the first person way back in the Spring of 2017 or possibly just a little earlier than that, who didn't want Henrique to be-resigned. I thought he'd be too much money for what he'd bring and I figured his shooting percentage would hit a wall around 30. At that time he was slated to become a UFA in 2019, so I was thinking two years ahead. I vehemently did not want him at $6 million per for 5-6 years, which is what I figured he'd get. It wound up being a little under $6 million for 5 years.

But I definitely would like him back now if we could make it work. Nothing too much going back their way and they'd have to retain a good portion of his salary.

I'd roll the dice next year on Henrique here for $3.5 million or something over Haula at $2-$2.5 million. Maybe we could get him sometime this year? It's a reunion worth exploring.

Henrique has never played with a player like Hughes before.

And don't even tell me we can't bring him here to play with Hughes, as we've been playing Erik Haula with Hughes this year.

But he doesn't necessarily have to come here to play with Hughes either.

There is clearly no indication that they want him gone.

At least not before the conclusion of this year.

I don't think any of us want him back after this year, but I still stand by that our lineup is better with him in it. In 2-3 years from now? Maybe not.

We also don’t have any injured defenseman right now, which is more lucky than normal.

If we traded Severson and then we lost Hamilton or Marino for any significant amount of time and our right side would be not good. Our defensive depth is a strength and losing him makes it not one.

The idea of losing Severson for nothing at the end of the season for nothing kind of bugs me on principle but it’s unlikely we even trade him at the TDL. Do people actually see him being traded +2 months before the TDL?

It’s Hamilton & Siegenthaler who have bled goals 5v5 lately anyway. In the last 11 games Hamilton and Siegenthaler have each been on the ice for 11 GA while Severson has been on the ice for 5 GA.

I don’t see the urgency.

We’re definitely breaking up with him because he did a good job on the PK last season with top minutes and now his the 5th defenseman on it. Even Smith gets more time on it this season. The team is learning to live without him on special teams.

Zetterlund can provide some of what Bastian did. I'm thinking the problem is more a top six winger. In my view, you have three forwards that carry almost all of the offensive burden. One more to help spread that around a bit more would be helpful.

I do agree that ideally our 4th line is Wood - McLeod - Zetterlund with Bastian being out. But I view Palat coming back soon as the "top 6 winger" addition.

I think a guy like Max Domi would be a perfect guy to add to the mix because he can really play anywhere in the lineup.

Palat - Hischier - Mercer
Sharangovich - Hughes - Bratt
Domi - Haula - Tatar
Wood - McLeod - Zetterlund

I would love to see Henrique back here. If he still plays anything like he used to, he can contribute some combination of the best elements of both Haula and Mercer. And he is good in front of the net on the PP, as was said.

But unless there is significant retention, that contract makes it a nonstarter. And I think the Ducks would ask for a big return.

To be fair, Graves, Wood, Tatar, and Blackwood are all expiring deals and I'm skeptical any are with NJ next season. I just think that for the team to compete this year they can't move these guys for futures. The remaining players don't care about picks and prospects. They want to win after years of failure.

unless severson asks for a trade, i’m not trading him. even as a huge liability, he deserves better than that.

He has been outplayed by Marino and Hamilton. He wants to get paid, and almost certainly will. I am disappointed he's been a good soldier and will miss the team improving beyond this season. He's a better defender than he gets credit for even if his mistakes are of the gut punch variety. Hopefully he can get some other team to pay him tip top dollar for many years after this one.
I wouldn't characterize what he does as typical mistakes, per se. It's lazy, bad decision making that he has failed to curtail after 9 friggin years. Indicative of a player that's either a bozo or selfish, or maybe some combination of both. If he wanted to win more and stick around, then he should have improved this part of his game. He had plenty of time. Now he's gonna get hamdsomely paid for being a decent, but very flawed, player. I don't feel the least bit bad for him.

Boquist and Rango do not bring enough elsewhere, to offset their black-hole board play. Forechecking cream-puffs who lose every "battle", often ending up on the ice.

They are not pieces on a contender...

I'm also not liking what I'm seeing out of Holtz in this regard.
Hey uh....you did see the recent game, right?

Shara was great with his forechecking.

Bad time to call him a cream-puff (unless of course you don't watch the games and only watch highlights....)

I would gladly take that contract 50% retained for 1 more year.

Maybe with max retention, but I'd rather have more flexibility for next season: They have a lot of guys to re-sign or replace, with Bratt being tops among them.

I'd take a pure rental, or if it is someone with term, a player who will be a long-term piece.

The players aren't the ones in charge! I'm sure Fitz wants to win also but there is a plan for the future in place and Severson is not part of that plan. They aren't winning the SC this year, this team needs a lot more work for that but I'm sure those players you mention aren't part of the future either, other than Wood!

This Severson stuff is just a ridiculous overreaction.

I wish someone with more time and dedication than me would make a montage of all the bad turnovers that players make in the course of a game that we just forget about because they don’t turn into goals.
