Pens blew it I see.
Good

Both them and Washington need to f*** off already, much like San Jose has over the last couple of years and much like the Kings did for quite a few years there and may still be doing. Boston kind of did for a few years there before being resurrected. Same with the Rangers.

I'd like to see neither make the playoffs or at least one of them out.

Both are auto-first round exits anyway at this point, ESPECIALLY Washington.

I really want to beat the Vancouver team everyone thought we should trade our entire future for.

It's hard to believe that in the past calendar year, rumors have floated that NJ would/should trade top prospects and first-round picks for decent-but-not-great Canucks' forwards like Brock Boeser, JT Miller and Conor Garland. Thank the stars Tom Fitzgerald was smarter than this.

The first period was pretty encouraging. The Devils did not play particularly well -- missed passes, turnovers and horrible shooting accuracy -- and still lead 2-0. Good teams find a way to win when they're not on top of their games. Last year, the Devils were the opposite -- several games NJ outplayed the opposition only to lose on the scoreboard. But again, the 2022-23 Devils are looking like a very formidable team.

It's funny as we approach the 10-game mark to think how hysterical some people became that the Devils did not get a big-name forward in the off-season. As it happens, John Marino filled a more pressing need and, thus far this season, has possibly been the most impact off-season acquisition in the entire NHL, give or take Nazem Kadri.

Looking forward to the rest of the game!
Someone suggested we trade for Miller a couple of days ago and he doesn’t stand out in any way.

Damn

Siegenthaler almost scored again.

That would have probably been softy of the night. Demko is really looking shaky right now.

Yeah, it would take a magnitude of a data input model that frankly outweighs my skills as both a data engineer and a hockey knowledge haver to properly weight every single scoring chance, and it would be impossible to do in real time. Smarter people than me have tried.

But xGF% usually does a decent job of telling the story at the end of the day. This period might be one example where it's not quite fair to what the Canucks were able to do, but again as fans of the Devils we probably overrate some of those chances because we want to see the team play perfect.
What you say is all true. But it speaks to the inaccuracy of perceptions of these stats in small sample sets. I think puck tracking will help, but still looking at these stats in game could be super misleading.

Well I would argue both points. Who says that Boeser or Garland wouldn't have worked here? Also, as was mentioned the last game where everyone was so thankful that Gaudreau didn't end up here through some sort of Fitz-magic when the fact was that he put out the best offer at the time and may have upped it if he actually got a call back. Also, maybe he would have worked out here too.

Who knows what would have happened. Should Fitz be criticized for getting an old, fragile Palat for the next 5 years? (just kidding but he is hurt) Johnson? Tatar?

We know that Marino worked out, that's one definitely in the win column but moves that don't happen shouldn't count.
