But we were on our way to a much needed rebuild when Jagr had a Gretzky season and dragged us to the playoffs. That was the end of the rebuild and the beginning of mediocrity.

what rebuild?

what did we build from 1998-2004

Not one decent young player outside of Tomas Kloucek

Pardon me for intruding but I have to say this :

It was a definite kick by Cam Janssen.

I'm not that much of a homer to say that the Rangers did get hosed there. To me, it was so blatantly obvious.

But I guess the ref there was taking lessons from the one who botched the Trapezoid-penalty call on Schneider the previous night. :help:

The refs have been god-awful with calls lately and tonight was no exception. Where's the accountability? Bah.

Regardless, I can't wait for the Winter Classic. That's going to be a lot of fun.

Yeah outdoor games against the Devils are gonna be awesome. Now instead of whiffing from the blueline, Hank can whiff from centerfield.

You also trade when it's addition by subtraction, which would be the case with almost any of the Rangers' "key" players.

I don't mean to suggest Janssen clearly kicked it, that was somewhat opaque. But, every time since the 05-06 lockot a guy scored while stopping, like Janssen, the review has gone against the Rangers.

It's nto a conspiracy, it's just a run of ****ing bad luck and inconsistent calls by the officiating crew.

I'm not saying I agree with all of that stuff, however, the reality is this team is just not built to succeed as we currently stand. With that said, if it means giving up a couple of "untouchables" to build something that could be really special? I wouldn't lose any sleep. We traded Thomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato for Bernie Nichols back in the day. Thomas Sandstrom was one of my favorites. That trade lead us to Messier. A little heartache for a cup is a trade I'm willing to make.

No problem with that opinion, the way you presented it. I personally don't subscribe to it, I'm willing to keep building with Hank, Cally, McD, Girardi, etc. But I understand where you're coming from.

Maybe I should just attribute it to being over-dramatic after a loss, but I can't stand the "Hank you ****ing suck" and "Cally is so worthless, trade him ASAP before we lose him for free" posts.

Whoever thought about paying the devils and islanders to be part of the MSG network should be bent over and have their ***** kicked by every ranger fan in the tri-state area.

Eh, if we're gonna be a mushy middle NHL team as long as this bunch is here then it's at least nice to have like four big local rivalries. The Devils' superstar ran away to Russia, the Islanders are a mess organizationally, even if we lose both the season series it's not like we're looking up to them.

My issue with Callahan was that it was a lazy play. He was broken in two by Andy Greene and tried to cover for it by swinging his stick like Boog Powell.

Exactly...in fact, it borders on being stupid and dangerous.

We got more than we deserved this game.

Key players needs to step it up, man up and lead by example..

Hank shouldn't have given up a rebound on the kicked in goal, he should have saved the Ryder goal and he should have saved the OT goal. That's 3 out of 4 goals on or partially on our $8.5m goalie.

Step. Up. Your. Game.

And in 2006 after the lockout we brought in a bunch of kids and actually looked almost decent. But Jagr made the team look better than it was, Sather thought the team was actually a contender, and went right back into "sign this, sign that".

If this team is going to continue the mediocrity treadmill, making this a transitional year, so be it. But, then management has to recognize the need to reconstruct the roster to fit the way this coach wants to play. And, that means moving long-time favorites. It's called proper asset management.

Agreed. I don't have a problem with this being a transitional year. I mean what do you expect with a new coach/system nine times out of ten?

The Rangers absolutely need to address some areas on the roster ASAP. Even if its for some picks and you bring up some kids; so be it.

you don't trade for the sake of trading. We clearly need a scorer back. One being available is why you make a trade.

I agree. I'm not saying make a trade to make a trade, but a core piece has to be moved for something a team needs, a legitimate top-6 forward.

Move Staal for a top-6 forward. Move Girardi for a top-6 forward and prospect.

Something has to be done, because this is the definition of mediocrity, and the core isn't performing up to standards.

none of those young players were better than any of the core players drafted by us currently on the roster. Jagr got them to the 2nd round. What was sather supposed to do? dismantle the team?

I still think Lundqvist snaps out of it. He's lost games he normally seals. Three or four of those losses used to be wins or shootout wins. 15-14-1 could very well be 18-11-1

A dominant Lundqvist makes this current group a 45-50 win team. He needs to wake up.

Other than MacTruck ALL of our defensemen are having mediocre seasons. Staal is not the Staal of old maybe because of injuries, John Moore isnt playing well at all. If Callahan isnt 100% than he cant keep playing and making mistakes. We also need stepan to put it in another gear. i understand he still gets points but if he would just push himself a little more than nash and kreider would score every game

He was supposed to stay the course. Maybe get a top 10 pick. What a tragedy that would have been.

Hank and Jagr basically threw out the rebuilding phase.

And as awesome as they were, that's been more of a negative than a positive in the long-run.
