22 is a special one. 40 goal scorer - 2 time cup winner - Con Smythe trophy winner.

The whole contract thing after the 95 Cup soured me a bit ..and always hated Steve Thomas because of it but Claude is a special person in Devils history.

mostly a who's who of what the f***?!

And we got him basically because the Red Wings signed Troy Crowder. He was a 6th round longshot who turned himself into a versatile, tough impact player

The Group I RFA from that era was a fun thing to learn about since it was a few years before I got really into hockey.

Back in those days, teams could sign a Group I RFA (24 or younger, less than 5 years NHL experience) to an offer sheet. The crazy thing was that the original team had no right to match. Instead the two teams had a short window for "equalization." In essence, they had to work out a trade otherwise both teams would submit their offers before an arbitrator who would side with one team.

The famous case was the Blues signing Brendan Shanahan from us. The arbitrator sided with Lou and assigned us Scott Stevens.

Just a few weeks later, Detroit signed Troy Crowder. Perhaps feeling overconfident from the Stevens ruling, Lou had the nerve to request Bob Probert as the compensation. Unlike Crowder, Probert could play a regular shift and score 20 goals. The arbitrator sided with Detroit who were offering Dave Barr and Randy McKay.

The equalization process proved to be too chaotic, so Group I got merged in with Group II RFAs in the 1995 CBA. Ie, the offer sheets that have a predefined level of draft pick compensation.

The pieces @Bad Goalie has been calling for in Utica :)
I don't think I would have requested any of these jamokes.
- Timur Ibragimov is a 22-yr-old, 6th round LW that has primarily been an ECHL player.
- Santeri Hatakka is a 22-yr-old, 2019 6th round LD who has played a total of 8 games this season.
- Zachary Edmond is a 22-yr-old, 2018 6th round goalie who has played 4 games this season, all for the ECHL Witchita Thunder.

# 6th round draft selections that have produced Nada for the Sharks at the AHL level.

OK or Bahl are LDs. One of them would have finished out this season with the Comets and make the Hatakka look like a peewee in comparison.
Mukh was headed here soon as well. Another guy who would have stepped right into the lineup.

Aside from the 1st round merry-go-round the Sharks got, they gained 3 players, all of whom who can or will play at the NHL level. I realize the Devils got the gold piece in Meier, but Fitz could have at least got something back for the farm after giving up 3 top game day players. The 3 he got will do nothing for the Comets. Likely we will see all 3 playing in Adirondack. There isn't an ounce of NHL possibility for any of them and I doubt there is even any AHL potential.

Was a little disappointed with #96

Was hoping to see #8. Don't know why?

How the hell does this team not have 8, 9 or 10, 15,16, 19,21, 22 in use?

Those are great hockey numbers. Damn kids pissing on tradition.

There weren’t that many new numbers this season:
2 Brendan Smith (wore it in DET for 6 seasons)
6 John Marino (wore it in PIT)
18 Ondrej Palet (wore it in TBL for 9 seasons)
40 Akira Schmid
41 Vitek Vanecek (wore it in WSH)
56 Erik Haula (wore #56 on 7 teams)
91 Dawson Mercer (yes, it’s terrible # lol)

Reilly Walsh actually wore #8 for one game in 2021-22.

No one has worn #9 since Taylor Hall. It’s a traditionally a star’s # and we only pulled that off twice. I don’t mind it not being passed around to randos.

This guy wore #10 for 22 games this season, it is in use.

No one has worn #15 John Hayden in 2019-20.
Solid number, someone should wear it, but mostly scrubs have worn it sporadically since Langenbrunner rocked it.

This is. (Yes, I have a Nick Lappin jersey. I was all hopped up on the excitement of the Albany Devils 2016 Playoff run.)

I don’t have a problem with no one wearing #19 since Zajac in 2020-21.

No one has worn #21 since Palmieri in 2020-21. Wouldn’t have been a bad number for Mercer, #15 would have worked too, but he wanted to be a defensive lineman.

Great write up and I agree 100% but I shortened it so it doesn't look bulky on the reply. The wild thing is if this team valued someone like Vesey this team would've been set for next year with everything on the forward side of the puck. They could definitely go out and try to find the Zetterlund type that they obviously trade away. Not sure if it would make sense but imagine Ross Colton coming home?
Maybe San Jose will do something stupid like (Seattle) put Zetterlund on waivers on next seasons opening roster and we can claim him back for nothing like Bastian.

Also Ross Colton would be an awesome replacement for Huala or Wood.

Shit...I was wrong ...I really thought McKay came with Lee Norwood in the Paul Yserbaert trade.

After you posted that I had to check.

I assumed that as well for a while. Norwood I recall was from California...it used to be very strange and exotic to have a California born NHLer at the time

What do we trade Meier for at the deadline in 2031?

Arnott was like the original Taylor Hall. Rescued him from a bad situation in Edmonton where his career had flatlined and fans had turned on him...he comes here and after a period of settling in turns into a heck of a player. Only with Arnott he became a piece of a championship team. We had to part with Zelepukin who sadly would never be the same due to a bad eye injury, and an arrogant malcontent in Guerin who just wanted to be paid

Hatakka is should be good next season in the AHL, he didn’t play this year due to injury. He’s played 9 games in the NHL.

The others look useless and are just to balance the contracts out. They’re on their last year of their ELCs and they won’t be re-signed (obviously).

I don't know if you saw the Fitzgerald press conference tonight but he said he was going to be looking for help for Utica in the next week but it's sometimes hard to get it done

I still get a kick out of the list of randos that wore #9 between Parise and Hall.

Josefson, Pesonen (who wore 3 different numbers over 4 career games in 2012-13), Butler, Sislo, Tedenby, Whitney, Havlat, and Tlusty.
Tlusty is one the most nondescript players in an era full of them.

thinking back to some of the worthless randos we dressed in NHL jerseys between 2013 and 2022 is a sad sad endeavor. Beau Bennett, Nick Lappin, Karl Stollery, Blake Pietila, one of the Sestito's, some guy named Yohann Auvitu. Getting excited because Joseph Blandisi had a good game. Yea he's gonna be a stud!

Waiting and waiting and waiting for Jacob Josefeson to a) get healthy and b) DO SOMETHING for years. I mean it's not like he drafted him over some awesome studs in that part of the draft but 18 goals in 200+ games is a spectacular level of ineptitude. Round 2 we go ahead and take Eric Gelinas over Dimitry Orlov who Washington nabs with the very next pick. Wonderful

Dark times. Show how far we've come

People are really bothered by the fact he took #96 ? I don't think any Devil has worn that even in a prospect camp lol. A number is a number. Those days of positions using certain numbers are becoming distant. It seems like alot of players like their birth year or just picking some random high number.
