So, I know this has probably been covered ad nauseam, but I want to cover the assets we gave up here.

Our window may be quite long. But our prime window is going to be 2022-2023 until 2026-27. We have five years in our prime as a franchise. After that Hischier becomes a UFA, Marino becomes a UFA, our current kids (Nemec, L. Hughes, etc.) are all going to be free agents... we could well continue to be contenders after that point, especially if we trade and draft well in the interim. But we should not assume that after that point we'll stay competitive.

That means our prime, the period we need to be focused on, is the next five seasons (including this one). Those are the years we should highlight.

With that in mind, let's consider what we gave up.

First, Fabian Zetterlund. Zetterlund is a hard piece to give up, because he's a mid-round pick that made good. Losing him sucks, because he's likely to be good in exactly this period of prime. Zetterlund is 23 years old, at the end of our big window he'll be 27. He's a perfect depth forward for our team, at the ideal age, playing the perfect style. But we have to give to get and Meier is also going to be the ideal age during that same period.

Second, two first round picks. Those two first round picks are the hardest thing for us to give up, because they are prime assets. But, players drafted in 2023 and 2024 are likely to contribute in 2025-2026 at the soonest. That means they are assets valuable at the end of our window, and not useful for the next few prime years. It sucks to lose them, but again Meier is gonna be a prime asset for all five years of this period (he better be, or Fitzy f***ed up royally).

Third, Okhotiuk. Nikita is a good defensive defenseman, one with top-4 potential. He's physical and losing him sucks. But, that said, this team only has room for one of him and Bahl. If we kept both on the roster we'd eventually end up losing one of them on waivers, and better to spend them as an asset than lose them on waivers.

Fourth, Mukhamadullin. In some ways this one hurts me the most, because this is a guy who committed to us years ago when he didn't have to and expressed a willingness to toil in Utica to earn his stripes. Trading him before he even comes to the AHL therefore hurts. On the other hand, it means when he moves to America he'll get to settle in one place and not have to worry about us trading him, so that's good for him. Like Zetterlund, Mukh is the ideal age for our prime. He's the right age to start contributing as soon as next season and then be a big contributer through the 2026-27 prime.

But we have Hughes and Nemec.

He's never going to get a fair shot with Hughes and Nemec ahead of him. Never. Like Holtz this year, he may well deserve to be in the NHL out of camp next year, but there was no chance of that happening.

So, what did we do? We bought Meier - who at 26, will be 31 at the end of our prime period. That means he's the ideal age, just before what will likely be his best statistical seasons, to be a huge contributor in our core. We also did not give up any of our "next in line" assets, not even Holtz, who (astonishingly) remains in our pipeline as a potential top-6 RH shot contributor as soon as next season (he better get a real shot).

Our forward roster for next season looks something like:

Meier - Hughes - Bratt
Holtz - Hischier - Mercer
Palat - Boqvist - Sharangovich
X - McLeod - Bastian

If we can get Meier and Bratt both signed to identical ~$8.5M contracts, we're in ridiculously good shape.

I' d rather have Bertuzzi. I could see Bratt getting his ass handed to him in the playoffs. It's a mentality. Bratt is more skillful, but Bertuzzi is the more rounded player.
Absolutely not. Not even close.

Bertuzzi isn't a more rounded player. He just chases hits. He's not even particularly good defensively. And you're losing on way more offense than Bratt.

Bratt is an elite winger. He is a driver. Bertuzzi is not. And this isn't even considering his injury risk - he might not even be in the lineup.

The Meier deal is only a win next season and beyond if they retain Bratt too. You need elite players to win. Not a collection of "mid" guys.

Was a little disappointed with #96

Was hoping to see #8. Don't know why?

How the hell does this team not have 8, 9 or 10, 15,16, 19,21, 22 in use?

Those are great hockey numbers. Damn kids pissing on tradition.

i wore 8 as a left D 1988-2014 ... but it was soccer. mercer was 18 now 91

i agree, 91 is shit

You say this, but I feel like if somebody did take 9 or 15 or 19 or 21 or 22, you'd say they were disrespecting Parise, Langenbrunner, Zajac, McKay, or, uh, Asham/Barch/Boulton.
No, no, no. You mustn't have read the book of Jim twisted logic.

Zajac and Parise never won anything here... Langenbrunner on the hand might rise to that level, however John MacLean the player is greater and since the number was reissued to a lesser all bets are off.

McKay is certainly in high standing but wasn't a drafted player and spent too much time as a bottom 6er therefore can make no claim to a number.

The others come on....

fwiw McKay deserves to be in some kind of ring of honor...not number retirement or anything but he was an outstanding Devil and heart and soul guy for a long time. Feel he gets a bit forgotten, even moreso than Brylin.

And we got him basically because the Red Wings signed Troy Crowder. He was a 6th round longshot who turned himself into a versatile, tough impact player

For many years I always made sure to keep McKay on my all-time team, but it's getting harder and harder to justify that.

I'll also say - it's clear that we offered far and away the best package for Meier. No one else bid anything even close.

Wyshinski loves the trade for us at ESPN:

“The bottom line: The Devils did not have any draft pick tied to Meier signing an extension in New Jersey, which is interesting.”

How does one of the major national writers for the NHL not realize this is no longer an option?

Meier is costing more than 8.5, I think, to sign and will have to become our highest paid player if we are to sign him. Just my gut. Of course he’s restricted, and I don’t know the rules well, but some other club may even give him an offer sheet right?

Could be a tricky negotiation for Fitz. With the Bratt situation pending too. Wonder if we try to do it now or wait.

We were 5th in GF/GP without Meier, going to be scary.

I don’t know if I’m going to get used to that Dano head monstrosity.

Every time a post of yours comes up now, my reaction is “WTF is that” and then I remember.

Remembering doesn’t even make it better. I hate those things. It’s the chest hair blob triangles, they’re a bridge too far for me.

I hope this is wrong, because I think whatever we give Meier we will have to match for Bratt. It could get very dicey if the cap doesn't go up a lot.

Shit...I was wrong ...I really thought McKay came with Lee Norwood in the Paul Yserbaert trade.

After you posted that I had to check.

Great write up and I agree 100% but I shortened it so it doesn't look bulky on the reply. The wild thing is if this team valued someone like Vesey this team would've been set for next year with everything on the forward side of the puck. They could definitely go out and try to find the Zetterlund type that they obviously trade away. Not sure if it would make sense but imagine Ross Colton coming home?
