Johansson is a very good and very versatile 2nd line LW/C. His best assets are that he is an ace at zone entry and he is excellent on the PP. His downside is that he is a bit soft and does not feature a great shot, he's more of a set-up guy.
For what Shero traded, this has to be considered a very good deal. A 2nd/3rd rounder for a second line player with two-way acumen and 50+point potential (at a reasonable salary) is a very good bargain.
My only question would be: how does this help the very undermanned NJ blueline?
My hypothetical answer would be that one of Henrique or Zacha are on the way out. The Devils are loaded with LW/Cs now (Henrique, Zacha, Hischier, Quenneville and now Johansson), and with the first LW slot belonging solely to Taylor Hall and Zajac still the first line C... well, someone's gotta go.
I see Zacha for Hanifin as a deal which would make sense for both sides, or perhaps Zacha for Dumba. Hischier is going nowhere of course, and I don't see Quenneville having as much trade value now as he would after a full year playing at the NHL level. So I would have to think the bait for a D is Zacha or Henrique.
Most importantly for right now, the Devils acquired a very good two-way forward at a very reasonable price.
Henrique is gone, almost has to be now for a defenseman.
