Johansson is a very good and very versatile 2nd line LW/C. His best assets are that he is an ace at zone entry and he is excellent on the PP. His downside is that he is a bit soft and does not feature a great shot, he's more of a set-up guy.

For what Shero traded, this has to be considered a very good deal. A 2nd/3rd rounder for a second line player with two-way acumen and 50+point potential (at a reasonable salary) is a very good bargain.

My only question would be: how does this help the very undermanned NJ blueline?

My hypothetical answer would be that one of Henrique or Zacha are on the way out. The Devils are loaded with LW/Cs now (Henrique, Zacha, Hischier, Quenneville and now Johansson), and with the first LW slot belonging solely to Taylor Hall and Zajac still the first line C... well, someone's gotta go.

I see Zacha for Hanifin as a deal which would make sense for both sides, or perhaps Zacha for Dumba. Hischier is going nowhere of course, and I don't see Quenneville having as much trade value now as he would after a full year playing at the NHL level. So I would have to think the bait for a D is Zacha or Henrique.

Most importantly for right now, the Devils acquired a very good two-way forward at a very reasonable price.

Henrique is gone, almost has to be now for a defenseman.

So basically we traded Adam Larsson + Jaromir Jagr + Graham Black + Paul Thompson + Lou for Palmieri, Hall, and Johansson.

No. This second was acquired from Savard. Nothing to do with Jagr. The Jagr 2nd was in 2015 and a conditional 2016 third.

This deal is really perplexing by Washington.

They made sure it protect Johansson at the expansion draft and they didn't need to clear cap today. There was time to get a better deal.

Works for us, but this is a pretty awful deal for the Caps.

I'm thinking they have a Carlsson extension in the works as well as the Burkovsky contract

Where does he play...C/LW or RW? We're happy to have him either way but if he played RW that would be better.

Left wing has been his primary position for the past several years. He broke into the league as a center for his first two seasons, before shifting to wing. He spent some time as Ovie/Backstrom's RW during the Dale Hunter-coached season (and sporadically at the beginning of Trotz's coaching tenure), but has mostly played LW. Spent about 10-15 games at center in 2016, but otherwise left wing.

This is a perfect fit for what we are doing here. Adding nice pieces around a young core and hall. Play the year out go through the growing pains and experience of the rookies playing. Now get something for kovy.

Or win every game 8-7

Well we're not quite at that point yet but it's nice to finally have a little hope here, at least up front.

We have been adding a lot of scoring talent in a hurry.

We do need D to make any kind of noice, but this is the correct direction after years of no skill no offense hockey.

so our C/LW now looks like this:

Taylor Hall
Travis Zajac
Nico Hischier
Pavel Zacha
Marcus Johansson
Adam Henrique
John Quenneville
Miles Wood
Joe Blandisi
Michael McLeod
Brian Boyle

has to mean another move is coming

Unless Johansson moves to RW which he has played a bit but not a lot recently. Makes sense to try him there. Henrique is definitely expendable IMO for a Dman.

No. This second was acquired from Savard. Nothing to do with Jagr. The Jagr 2nd was in 2015 and a conditional 2016 third.

Yeah, we traded the Jagr haul for Palmieri. We traded Savard's contract and Lou's compensation for Johansson.

I just don't know how we are going to get a valuable defenseman for Henrique. I'm all for moving him since I really don't believe he's all that good, but I severely doubt we are getting a top 4 defenseman for him. Maybe we can get Demers, which would be a steal. But yea another move has to be coming.

such a great trade. endlessly happier about this season from just this morning. looking forward to how we get a defenseman.

A top six of:

Hall-Zajac-Palmieri
Zacha-Hischier-Johansson

Now that's a good young core. Add Quenneville, McLeod, Blandisi, Speers and a few others and we're looking really good up front now.

Shero is magic.
