Scouting Report for you guys:

Speedy two-way winger with a nice touch and willing to drive to the net. Responsible defensively, but for some reason hasn't seen much PK duty since his first couple years in the league (although many feel he could PK if given the chance). He's not particularly strong along the boards, so you'll hear many Caps fans call him "soft." However, despite his board inefficiencies, he's more than willing to drive the dirty areas on the ice. The majority of his goals come in and around the crease. Willing to screen goalies. In open ice, he's more of a playmaker than a shooter (his shot isn't noteworthy). Good at zone entries, although several years ago he overused the drop pass on zone entries so that became a gripe for Caps fans that has stuck with him as a label.

His year's under Adam Oates were bad because Oates forced him to adjust the curve of his stick and he ended up shanking a lot of pucks. His stats under Boudreau and Trotz are more indicative of his level of play. He probably won't be a 58 point player again, but he's a reasonable bet for 20G/45-50P in most seasons (at least on Washington).

Oates is ****ing awful, not surprised by this whatsoever.

Too many Caps players had their worst year(S) under Oates. Holtby was another one. Oates is one of the worst and most poisonous hockey coaches.

**** him.

lol well it's not quite THAT simple...it was a 2 and Reaves for a 1.

But it is hilarious that we got both the picks we traded for nothing - the 2nd from Florida in the Savard trade, the 3rd from Toronto for Lou. Now we only have our own picks the next few drafts and I love it.

Johansson is a very good and very versatile 2nd line LW/C. His best assets are that he is an ace at zone entry and he is excellent on the PP. His downside is that he is a bit soft and does not feature a great shot, he's more of a set-up guy.

For what Shero traded, this has to be considered a very good deal. A 2nd/3rd rounder for a second line player with two-way acumen and 50+point potential (at a reasonable salary) is a very good bargain.

My only question would be: how does this help the very undermanned NJ blueline?

My hypothetical answer would be that one of Henrique or Zacha are on the way out. The Devils are loaded with LW/Cs now (Henrique, Zacha, Hischier, Quenneville and now Johansson), and with the first LW slot belonging solely to Taylor Hall and Zajac still the first line C... well, someone's gotta go.

I see Zacha for Hanifin as a deal which would make sense for both sides, or perhaps Zacha for Dumba. Hischier is going nowhere of course, and I don't see Quenneville having as much trade value now as he would after a full year playing at the NHL level. So I would have to think the bait for a D is Zacha or Henrique.

Most importantly for right now, the Devils acquired a very good two-way forward at a very reasonable price.

So basically we traded Adam Larsson + Jaromir Jagr + Graham Black + Paul Thompson + Lou for Palmieri, Hall, and Johansson.

Well when you put it that way...

Yeah but the Oilers made the playoffs last year and we didn't and the Panthers made the playoffs in 2016 and we didn't.

So we lost those trades and if Washington makes the playoffs and we don't next year, we lose this trade too bruh!

This deal is really perplexing by Washington.

They made sure it protect Johansson at the expansion draft and they didn't need to clear cap today. There was time to get a better deal.

Works for us, but this is a pretty awful deal for the Caps.

It doesn't, but it also doesn't really matter in relation to this particular trade. You do this trade whether you have a loaded top 6 or 6 beer league players.

I'd way sooner trade Rico than Zacha personally, but if they can land Hanafin for either it would be hard to complain.

so our C/LW now looks like this:

Taylor Hall
Travis Zajac
Nico Hischier
Pavel Zacha
Marcus Johansson
Adam Henrique
John Quenneville
Miles Wood
Joe Blandisi
Michael McLeod
Brian Boyle

has to mean another move is coming

And this is why you sit back and wait

We got crazy on July 1st. July 2nd Shero makes a huge move

Exactly the people who overreacted and bad mouthed Shero look silly now. This is a guy I have wanted for a while and I can't believe we got him so cheap. He scored 58 points last year and we got him for a 2nd and 3rd. This reminds me so much of the Palmieri deal.
