What would Nashville have to offer? I'm sure Hynes would be interested in Severson. Also, they are loaded with LD now (Josi, Ekholm, McDonough). Could be a deal there somewhere.

TO NSH: Severson and Tommy Novak
TO NJD: Trenin and Tommy Novak
In all seriousness, Trenin is an intringuing player (size and scored almost a 20 goal pace this year). And, obviously would be expecting a + from Nashville in such a deal.

Is it really the end of the world if he helps keep Nemec in Utica and helps the team make a playoff push?
Also If by the deadline Nemac shows he is ready (in the minors or as a call when injuries inevitably hit) you can still trade Severson mid-season if you want to open the spot. (Think theme they traded Hale to open up a spot for Greene).

But don’t deal away your depth before the kids are ready. The team improves by having depth. Something many people on here forget or overlook.

I don’t think we’re getting a player that checks all of those boxes and also has term in a Severson deal. It’s probably a deal for futures or a player in a comparable contract situation.
Truthfully I'm cool with futures. We've done a bunch to speed up the timeline, and that was the right thing to do, but a guy like Nylander is too much of a good thing, it would throwing gas on the fire.

A right side of Hamilton Marino and Smith could also keep Nemec in Utica, while still getting long term assets for Sev's.

If we keep Sev's, make the playoff's, lose in rnd 1, or even worse, be in the playoff hunt and just miss out and then lose him for nothing? I'd say we played that very poorly.

Severson should return a 1st IMO which we could flip next offseason for a forward, LD to replace Graves if we want to ease Luke in, or a goalie depending how Blackwood looks this year

Trading Sev's at the deadline really only makes sense if we stink. Which is possible, but not highly probable.

We have RD depth though
Hamilton, Marino, Smith.

It just seems silly to lose Damon for nothing just for one playoff push, when I doubt having Smith there being responsible defensively for a young player would be much worse. Plus then youd have Brendan on his opposite side

The left side will just have to have Luke or an Ohkotyuk on the 2nd pair. Maybe convince Graves to sign a one year big dollar deal?

I dont wanna acquire anyone with term for the left side. Guys gotta grow into a role

After thinking about it I actually don’t think Severson is worth trading right away unless it’s part of a package for the type of forward we are in need of. A few picks is not gonna cut it considering we don’t have anyone that can fulfill his role this coming season, especially if Dougie or Marino get injured.

Its tough, because Ty Smith seemed like a great guy, but he was bad on an Epic level last season. The defense was solid, but Smith was directly involved with a handful of losses. Can you imagine the goalies vs defense debate if Ty didn’t sink some of the stats?

It sucks, but it’s classic addition from subtraction. The return is straight up multiplication.

Looking ahead, Marino Hamilton provide perfect protection for Nemec.

On the left side, we are expecting big things from Hughes. To the point where if he doesn't pan out, that is really a crimp in the plans. So expecting him to play semi sheltered mid pairing minutes(both Sieg's and the bottom pair guys are defense oriented) is not too crazy.

And Smith will provide solid insurance for both sides.

Not many teams have top4 quality depth waiting in the wings in case one of the actual top 4 get injured.

But if we were to subtract Sev's, we still have a legit top4. And multiple options for each 3rd pair spot.

I can agree with this sentiment but how I see it this

The 1st+ hed get is worth more to me than a missed playoff season because a Dougie or Marino got hurt. This next season is a push for us but not one we have to make, I dont think. The kids alone should have us near the playoffs

Plus itll become a very testy discussion if come January were teetering on 'is this a playoff race or not', and then youre into the territory of upsetting guys by moving a piece during a 'playoff push' (aka anything outside being within 5pts)

Move him before the season and you prevent that from happening while getting good value. Worst case you can acquire a cheap RD for a playoff push if injuries happen. Would cost less than the 1st+ Damon will receive

Brendan Smith is an extra defensemen type. There are going to be injuries which then blows what paper depth that is to pieces.

We should be past the point of wanting to collect first round picks (and I’m not sure he even has 1st round pick value). It’s time for the organization to do something, which means keeping guys who can actually help in the near term. If he walks next year, fine the internal replacement (Nemac) should be ready.

They trade him and are competitive, guess what then they are probably looking to acquire a Damon Severson type at the deadline. Start the year with him and see how things play out. If the kids absolutely push and show they are players you can deal him mid-year to open up spots.

Severson will be the prize of the trade deadline. Teams are desperate for RD

The fact that we also get a 3rd makes it better haha. A+ fitz
I think we gave up the third, not received one. Would be awesome if we got that though…

That ball tingling feeling is back.

B Smith was just a solid contributor on a playoff team. I have no qualms with Smith as our 3rd pair RHD.
