Do right by him? What? This is a business. You make it sound like he's a 25 year old stud goaltender that we just acquired. He's 39. He has one year left on his deal. He's been around the block, he knows the drill.

Any chance you have to improve your team, you do it. You don't think, "Oh jee, I have to make sure this guy and his family are taken care of before I do it..."

Doing right by him in this case will be Lou asking him what teams would he like to play for and Lou trying whatever he can ( within reason ) to get him on one of those teams.

Yeah Moose should be able to find someone to take him. I wouldn't even be mad if he signed with the Flyers or Islanders or something. That would probably only happen if we amnestied him or something, but the guy was forced to leave. Can't fault him for finding work wherever he can basically.

He'd make a fantastic backup somewhere where a healthy/semi younger goalie was the starter. Compare his save percentage this year in games where he was playing as a backup to games where he was starting all those games consecutively while Marty was injured. It was like a 912 as a backup which is pretty good for a backup goalie and close enough to where he was his first two years with us, and like an 869 as a starter. I ran the numbers a while ago. That tells me he's not a beer league level goalie, just at a starting level and those were the most consecutive games he's started in the NHL in his entire career.

Fact. I really wanted him to get some redemption this year, but end of day it was always going to be a HUGE risk to go forward in a full season with only two 40 plus goalies. That discussion is now moot as well as who will be Marty's heir. There is a win now and plan for the future mentality that Lou did this now and did not wait for Moose's contract to be up. He wants to get us locked in net.

Rhodes mentioned this too, but I don't think we should ignore that this may very well change how free agents look at the team now, both ours (clarkson mostly because I really don;t think Elias is leaving) and other UFAs. Not that appealing to lock yourself into a team that is uncertain in goal even if one of the goalies is Marty. Also it is clearly showing that we aren't as broke as the Post wants to say we are.

Those are valuable extra arrows in Lou's quiver against whatever players he is hunting (Vinny, Briere, Weiss, etc)

Not sure it has really sunk in how big a move this was for the team. Not Kovy levels, but it is up there.

I don't understand why Rangers fans think he's a backup. They're definitely in denial, because if this were the Flyers or Islanders that got Schneider, I would be pretty frickin worried right now. I already was worried either team would get Luongo when those rumors were going the other day. I was even worried that either of them might end up with Bernier, and he isn't on the same level yet, or as proven as Schneider is so far.

Yeah guys who are looking to sign long term know Marty is near the end. They would like to know who might be the goalie here in 2 years down the road. Is it gonna be Joe Blow who's struggling to get out of the ECHL right now? Or maybe Jonas Gustavsson? Or do we have a franchise guy ready to take over? By the way I wasn't taking a shot at Wedgewood when talking about a guy struggling to get out of the ECHL either. It wasn't my intent.
Don't mind that poster, he's just obsessed with the Devils and likes to see them fail at every opportunity that he frequently imagines things to get that feeling. Don't bother engaging him either, he just stops posting once his asinine comments are disproved.

Is it that Jackass#94 again?

Sam Gagner and a 1st (especially if it was the 7th overall) is quite a bit better an offer than the 9th straight up.

Not when Gagner wants 4.5 million and Canucks need to shred cap... Canucks had Horvat as one of the guys they interview before the draft, they seemed very high on him and he fits a big need. Canucks have some very strong young goalies almost ready in Lack, depending how he comes back from his hip surgery, Eriksson and Cannata. Also 7th or 9th doesn't matter cause we would of drafted Horvat at 7th and we couldn't take on Gagner for cap reason this whole Oilers had a huge offer thing is way overblown.

You guys got IMHO a top 5 goalie in the NHL, who may even be top 3, he's really that good.

Yes that is exactly what I meant.

Obviously Lou shouldn't of been thinking of Moose when he made the trade, and I am glad he didn't. That is silly and bad business, and Moose knows that too.

That said both sides know we are cutting ties, but he is a locker room favorite, a good guy, and has done a lot for us since he got here. Doing right is either trying to move him so he can go play somewhere else or buying him out.

In theory we could be cheap as hell keep him or just banish him somewhere like Florida or something. Though his NTC does protect him from crap like that.

You guys just got one hell of a goalie. He's big, quick and agile, but has such an economy of movement, never seems to over play the puck or have to make an acrobatic save. From all accounts, he's also a real solid character.

I'm glad he didn't go to Edmonton.

hedberg is one of the most respected men in pro sports. lou is one of the most loyal men in pro sports. those two facts don't suggest that lous is just gonna toss him aside. somehow lou will make sure hedberg is where he wants to be and his family is taken care of

Well they won't be calling him a back up after the year, Schneider is on Rask and Quicks level.

I agree, I fully expect whatever happens with Moose to be a respectful and dignified solution for both parties.

If Schneider played a few more games this year then he's very likely a Vezina finalist. Probably wouldn't have won over Bob, but in the top 3 for sure. He had a minor injury during the last week of the season.

He was my favorite for Vezina for much of the season. I didn't think the BJ's were gonna wind up barely missing the playoffs, so I really didn't think Bob was gonna be in the running at that time.

Mercy, I love hearing that...

Calgary and the Oilers were after Schneider today, and Avs were before they made the trade for Varlamov, which they made as a backup plan to Schneider so there you have 3 of our 4 divisional rivals who all went hard after Schneider, that's pretty telling about how good he is.

Marty's interview speaks volumes.

One hand it is great to hear how he still thinks he is number 1 and is going to make Cory fight for it, like that we are going to have a little competition in net. Should keep them both at a high level.

The stuff that hurts is Marty admitting that this was an important move because he won't be playing forever. Reality of that is still sinking in and that doesn't feel great.

It sucks when you have to finally accept that even personal heroes are mortal just like us. Won't be a dry eye in the arena when Marty plays his last game....regardless of who is there to take over.

You guys killed it today. You got Schneider who I've seen firsthand is a great young goalie, and still had a tremendous draft despite moving pick #9.

I just had a question, what's your goalie situation looking like now? Capgeek has you guys with Brodeur, Schneider and Hedberg (Marty and Johan on 35+ deals) all under contract, what's likely going to happen?

Bye bye Hedberg.

Trade/buyout/retirement. He's very well liked in the organization so would not surprise anyone if he retires to take a front-office gig.

I hope he gets to wear #35, always dug it as a keeper number.

Hah, was just thinking that.

You know, if the transition from the Marty era is going to be a certain way, I'd rather it be like this. Ending the way it began, with a team built from the net out.

Of course, that's assuming things pan out.

It is crazy and saddening to realize that I've now seen certain athletes' entire careers. Especially when it comes to guys like Marty or Mariano Rivera.
