If he plays a full season he's at worst a 40-50 point player. Anderson COULD be that but Johnsson IS that. This deal is basically one that you can't really say anything bad about aside from his tendency to get hurt.
This is how I see it. We ate him as a cap dump and essentially traded a player that has the potential to be as good as the player we got.

I'm surprised there is isn't more vitriol over this move.

I never understood the Anderson love from this board. I'm totally on board moving him. I just don't know if this move was strictly necessary. Kinda just meh to me.

I mean Joey Anderson's a nice kid and will probably be an NHL player in some capacity (he already has 52 games played as a 22-year old and would likely have more if he didn't get hurt a couple years ago) but the Devils have a lot of those tweener-type forward prospects. Might as well move one of them for a more proven upgrade.

Can't complain about getting the better player. Makes some sense for Toronto too, possibly getting a similar player to AJ at 1/3 the cost.

And they need some competent wingers to help Nico and Jack develop and pot some goals for them.

It might not be a playoff or bust year, but they need to be competent and competitive on the ice to get these kids developing properly.

I’m not exactly confident in his talents away from offense superstars and Fitz traded for him without really seeing him play post-knee surgery.

Obviously we need scoring help, ES and PP, right now so while I would say I am unenthusiastic about this trade, I very much see the reasons for it.

It’s a small, low risk deal, since neither the loss of Anderson or Johnsson’s contract, even if his knee has all sorts of issues, are that much to complain about. AJ’s knee is presumably the reason he was kind of in the bargain bin because his deal, like all Leafs deals, was front loaded to make it easier to trade.

Yeah, the real goal is to be more competitive because last year was the most disheartening hockey of the past ten years and that's saying something.

Well in the sense that they were out of any kind of contention two weeks into the season and never really got back into it yeah you could make an argument this was even worse than 2014-15 since that team didn't really crater till the second half, although at least this year you could hang your hat on Blackwood and some younger forwards as SOMEthing to look forward to for the future as opposed to a 29-year old Cory being the only thing to look forward to after that season.

From what I've seen of Johnsson he has great hands in tight and can put the puck in the net a bit. He should be a good winger for either Jack or Nico.

I'm kind of confused by this post tbh. We moved Anderson, who you admittedly never really cared for, for a guy who when healthy is a 40-50 player (on limited minutes in Toronto) and can possibly eclipse that in a larger role. We need scoring, I don't think Anderson ever hits 20 goals in a season.

Didn't realize people were so attached to Joey Anderson... Thrilled with this deal
For me it isn’t about being attached to him. I rather would’ve gave up a third than Joey. I think he is going to be a solid 3rd line RW for years to come and was ready to step in this year. the return is excellent for NJ though. I just don’t think it’s as lopsided as others Do.

I’m sorry but a Cory buyout, Joey Anderson and a 5th for a a top 15 tandem goalie, a top 4 defenseman and a top 6 forward. Wtf is this fitzmagic?

you also have to believe that if any of Murray, Crawford, or johnsson have hot starts and the devils are putrid they can be moved for better than cap space + 5th + Anderson.

Watching his goals from the last 2 seasons, he looks comfortable going to the net and being in front of it, which is where goals come from.
He's a chippy player, but that chippyness in his play may cause his body to break down a little because he is a smaller player. He can pass, shoot, skate fast, pp, pk, whatever is needed really, except fight.

Won the MVP of the AHL playoffs when the Marlies won the championship a couple years ago.

I definitely question the idea that AJ somehow has more potential that will blossom at age 26 now that he’s playing away from Matthews, Nylander etc.

I’m grumpy about giving up Joey but I admit that’s more due to an emotional attachment. He probably won’t score as many goals as AJ but we’ll see how much AJ scores without being carried by his former linemates. I knew Toronto was going to pawn Johnsson off on someone but I didn’t suspect it would be us. I hope the surgically repaired knee holds up, I guess Fitz felt he saw enough in his one 10 minute appearance in the bubble playoffs to invest in the next three year with him.

Seems like Johnsson might help replenish a bit of what departed when Pickles was dealt.
