Hayden seems like more of a goon than anything.

With the signing of Simmonds (who isn't a goon, but will fight people), I don't think there's a need for Hayden to play all that much, if at all.

We've only even had goons on the NHL squad in the Shero/Hynes era during the two years that we've been really bad in 16-17 and 18-19. We had Luke Gazdic here in 16-17, who was called up later in the year and Kurtis Gabriel, who was called up for the first time in November of last year for an Islanders game. And even he was sent right back for a while after that.
7 penalty minutes in 24 AHL games last year. 27 penalty minutes in 54 NHL games. Physicaly play, and even ability to defend the smaller guys is most likely part of his game, but I don't think goon is appropriate.

Hayden is not a goon. He fought 3 times last season and 5 times the season before - it's something he's willing to do, but it's not why Chicago signed him.

Next time when someone wants to trade Matheson to the Devils I bring this up again.

"By the numbers: A look at the 10 worst contracts in hockey:

6. Mike Matheson, FLA
Contract: $4.875 x seven years
Surplus Value: -$21.5M
Positive Value Probability: 8.3%

Relative to the rest of the players here, Matheson isn’t paid that much, but it still seems mostly non-sensical that he does and for seven years. It’s the type of deal that’s panned out extremely well for other teams like Nashville’s Roman Josi and Carolina’s Brett Pesce, but Matheson didn’t really showcase the same level of excellence before signing.

Based on the salary structure, it’s clearly a deal the team expects him to grow into, going from $3.5 million in the first year to $6.5 million in the final year, but that’s difficult to imagine given what he’s shown so far. He’s 25 now, what you see is what you get and from this vantage point that seems to be a run of the mill bottom pairing guy that’s fed far too many minutes. He doesn’t drive play, is frequently out-scored as a result, doesn’t put up points, and he doesn’t play tough minutes.

Based on his salary, his expectations aren’t that high at just 5.8 wins over the next seven seasons, but even that low bar doesn’t seem like one Matheson can clear."

People just sort by who gets ice time and who was picked in the first round. I don't blame them for doing that - general managers do the same thing.

Andrew Ladd's contract deserves to be higher on that list. Also the two D on there that are actually good (doughty/Fowler) were on horrible slow teams last year so not surprising they had bad years. Analytically it will look bad for any top pairing D on a team that stinks out loud. 31 teams take Doughty and Fowler on their team with those contracts over Lucic and Ladd.

By what metric are they saying Matheson does not play tough minutes?

Looks to me like he very much does play tough minutes.

I guess I was mistaken. Not sure why I thought he was more of a fighter.

What has Anderson shown at this point? I'd 100% protect Miles over Anderson. Every single team has Anderson like players that will be exposed. They likely wouldn't pick him up. They would absolutely take Wood, and likely would take Coleman.
Wood is nothing more than a 4th line fast skater. I don't get your guys' obsession over him. He is HIGHLY replaceable.

So the article comes out saying Shero is probably done, due to fact Hayden would be pushed out of the lineup, and simmons would be down to a 4th liner.

I still think we need 1 of each, goalie, forward, and a defenseman , bingo is completely depleted . (now with lappin, gabriel and pietila gone ).

We could go after some regulars, that could perform better here, or room for to hit that blockbuster (mariner/laine, etc)

What do you guys think? (dont forget about those injuries and whos a two way and not)

I think most of our kids save for Bratt, Nico, and Hughes will all be in Bing.

remember that guys like Seney, McLeod, Bastian, even Anderson were all up with the big club because of all the injuries we have

hopefully we can be healthier this year so those guys can develop a full season in the AHL

I think he’s better than a 4th liner. His points per 60 is actually pretty good.

But I think he’s fairly replaceable.

If we’re protecting him in 2021 from the expansion draft, it probably means he was pretty good these next two years.

Looking at it right now, I’d say the guys to protect are probably Hughes, Hischier, Hall (assuming he’s still here), Bratt. Palmieri is a maybe. Maybe Boqvist, maybe Coleman and maybe Zacha. That’s for forwards. Actually I’m not even sure if Boqvist or Hughes will even need to be protected. I forgot the rules on that.

On D it will be Subban, Severson and maybe Butcher or a guy we don’t yet have who will later be acquired. Don’t think Smith will have to be protected yet.

And then hopefully Blackwood in goal.

Boqvist and any other rookie on their first year of their 3 year ELC wont need to be protected.
