I think you completely misunderstood my message. I am not against having Marner on the Devils. But considering his fit, the required cap space and the offer sheet compensation, it is for me not a no-brainer and it seems you agree with me, as you use could frequently in your post. Adding Marner to the current roster still could lead to a lottery pick changing hands in year one and/or two.

Well it's impossible to speak in absolutes with anything in the future haha I disagree that marner isnt a good fit, and I would be willing to give up the 4 first for him IF the contracts of Hall, Nico, and Marner arent crazy. Hall's brain is a hard one to get a read on, if he wants to win while being set up financially, the Tyler Seguin contract is more than reasonable with some extra money in there for the adjusted cap %. As for Nico I would love to get him to extend this offseason and not have to do this whole RFA song and dance that many teams have gone through. Marner I would give the matthews or Panarin contract number or even 3 years just above the 4 picks threshold. It's a very confusing process because there isnt much precedence and you cant point to examples as results of similar things since its never happened outside of Penner which was peanuts compared to this.

the literal last thing we need is a bottom pairing RHD.

If we traded Carrick we would for sure be in the market for a 7th defenseman. Can't just have mirco Mueller and then a bunch of AHL guys. What happens if Vatanen and Subban are hurt at the same time?

why are we trading Carrick?

like I said, we don't need anymore bottom pairing DMen. Especially RHD.

I included Carrick in a potential Gusev deal. Vegas has zero right-handed defenseman on their roster so there could be some appeal in carrick. If Engylland goes back they'll have 1.

Subban, Simmonds, Hughes, Boqvist, Smith, and probably another top 6 forward getting added to the team this upcoming season. What a time to be a Devils fan. That is a serious influx of talent.

Hope we didn’t have to take back Jones or Vlasic too.

On second thought, keeping both Carrick and Mueller isn’t a bad idea. After those two, I don’t think we even have any worthwhile call ups. I’m gonna assume Josh Jacobs is probably 9th on our depth chart.

I remember when Seth Helgeson was as high as 8th on our defensive depth list. Both Mueller and Carrick are much better than that.

I assume we will keep them both unless they are used in a trade. But which one will be sent to the minors and will they be claimed on waivers if so?

@WoodsyToast3791 makes a good point about Vegas having zero RHD on the roster. That is intriguing. Maybe they would be interested in a deal around Carrick and draft picks for Gusev + Clarkson.

Neither may be waived. We might just keep 8D on the roster if we’re healthy.

I just posed this question to Corey Masisak:
I've read varying reports about Boqvist's eligibility to play in the AHL should he get cut. If he doesn't make it onto the NHL team, does he HAVE to go back to the SHL, or does he have the OPTION to return to the SHL?

His reply:
He is eligible to play in the AHL. The Devils have to grant him the option to go back to the SHL, which Tom Fitzgerald told me they were prepared to do before he signed the contract. Now, maybe they would try to change his mind if it came to that, but that was the case in early June.

I'd rather keep an extra forward and get rid of Carrick. With 8 D-men we have to lose a forward spot.

Hall, Hischier,Hughes, Simmonds, Palmieri, Coleman,Bratt, Zajac, Wood, Zacha
John Hayden and Kevin Rooney aren't waiver exempt so I am assuming they will be carried. That is 12 if we carry 8 D only 1 forward spot is available.

With 8 D-men there is only 1 spot for another forward with Anderson, Boqvist, McLeod, Seney, Bastian, possibly Studenic looking for an opportunity. They are all waiver exempt so it doesn't matter...But holding a spot for an 8th Dman and denying a kid opportunity for it kinda sucks.

EDIT: But looking at this makes me think we are done for the off season?

We're so shallow on D we have to at least keep him and hope he passes thru waivers and sent down.

Kids who don't have waiver eligibility shouldn't be sitting in the press box in New Jersey. They should be playing in Binghamton.

I'd prefer to use Carrick + McLeod + picks to trade for Gusev and then sign a veteran RHD such as Lovejoy or McQuaid to be the 7th defenseman.

Hall - Hischier - Boqvist
Bratt - Hughes - Simmonds
Gusev - Zacha - Palmieri
Wood - Zajac - Coleman
Hayden, Rooney

Butcher - Subban
Greene - Severson
Smith - Vatanen
Lovejoy

Schneider
Blackwood

Minors: Mueller, Anderson, Seney

...why are we signing another DMan when Mueller can just as easily be the extra?

also your forward lineup is all sorts of weird

But we are far from shallow on the right side.
Severson, Vatanen and Subban...Butcher can play the right side in a pinch and Jacobs can be called up. They just signed Matt Tennyson (RHD) who has 124 games of NHL experience who'll be in Binghamton too. Carrick doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Josh Jacobs has played a NHL game... Carrick has played 201

I'm not sure I have any faith in any of our D in Bing. As I've said before, I believe I've read that we go thru 10 D on average, and to me, the more depth we have there the better.
