He’s fast when he wants to be, most of the time he floats around doing f*** all honestly, horray he stands still and tips pucks, how about dump it in, skate and use your ridiculous strength to body somebody? Nah too much too ask apparently
He has 4 goals in 4 games.

I'm all for emotion but this has devolved into pissing on the rug.

It's the worst part about this team losing.

I'm seeing the kid line and Kakko getting some hate in this thread but they were great game 1 and 2. They had a bit of a slow start to game 1 but had a strong second half to that game that continued into game 2. Game 3 was a mess because that line is best when Chytil transports the puck up the ice and he just couldn't do it that day because the ice was god awful on Saturday and no one could control the puck that day. And then the entire team sucked game 4 although Kakko had a good game. Kakko is actually looking way better these playoffs. He's not playing timid at all anymore and is finding ways to get the cycle off the boards and into the middle of the ice. I think he's drawn 2 or 3 penalties already doing this exact thing because he's too strong on his skates and the only way to stop him is by holding him. Hopefully it finally clicked in his brain that he's strong enough to bull his way into the middle of the ice and has the edgework to get off the boards faster than most dmen to create that little bit of space. Laf I have to admit has been a no show and I'm just not sure he'll ever be more than a third/fourth liner.

I think this non development thing is overstated. Chytil, Kakko, and Laf all showed signs of progress this year. 2 bad games doesn't change that. JT Miller was doing fine but he was a PIA and immature. Buch, Anisimov, Callahan, Dubinsky were all mid round guys who have/had nice NHL careers. Andersson and Kravs just plain suck and were bad picks and did nothing anywhere.
I disagree, saying someone sucked after they were already through the ringer here ignoring what they did until they got here is like burying your head in the sand. There's a ton of other high prospects we couldn't handle, each came in a star and left a chewed up piece of gum.

I would be interested in seeing Kakko with better teammates.

That he and Chytil have to play with Lafreniere is way more of a problem than it gets credit for.

"Oh yeah kid line!!!" My deepest sympathies to Fil and Kaapo.

Don't get me wrong- I think the effort last night was poor. But that's just one of several moving parts including the always under-considered part from homers on message boards- maybe the Devils did something too?!? Shocking I know.

NJD beat us at our own game. It runs counter to the early narrative but we may need to loosen up.
We didn't play what is supposed to be "our own game." That's the problem. We weren't committed to the things we did consistantly in the first two games, and less than consistantly, but still did, in game 3. Last night was mailed in.

I think it was a bad goal actually, it was a leaky goal. Barely snuck under his arm, he needs to be tighter there.

It's an atrocious goal when you factor in the circumstances.

Even so, we need to score more than 1 goal. 0-8 on PP the last two games is why we lost. We need to convert.

Still can win the series, but need to come out flying next game. Really hit them and put the pressure on.

It's pointless too. Ok, you're right. The team didn't try hard enough. Now what? Trade all of them? Get new players who may or may not do something you can't measure? It's pointless as a roster building approach and pointless as a discussion.
Well as someone who works in survey experimental methods for social science research, I do think there are some qualitative differences that can't currently be measured even with the amazing tech that we have.

Certainly there are fewer unobservable variables nowadays. Heck the NHL didnt use to measure save percentage, let alone high-low danger chances. But there are still many qualitative limitations to Vally-esque assertions like "You should always pass on a 2-on-1 because the odds are better."

Like, those of us who played the game at any sort of high level know that there are many contextual factors that go into a 2 on 1 decision. Are you on your shooting side or passing side in terms of angle? Where is the defenseman relative to you and your partner? Do you have to make the pass on your backhand? That's just 3 of like 15 things I had running through my mind on an odd man rush.

So as tech gets better, so does quantitative methods in using science-ey analysis of sports. But it still has limitations.

There was a game this year where the camera panned to the Rangers bench, final minute, down one goal, empty net, coach drawing up a play. Laf can be seen sitting on the bench, looking up, laughing at whatever meme was being shown on the jumbotron.

Guy is the definition of "just happy to be here." Seems to be enjoying the lack of responsibility.

I remember this! Lol!!

The script for the Rangers in the first two games was play tight on the Devils, don't give them much time and space and stay patient and it worked. These last two games they Devils took the same approach and now both teams have been so patient that basically nothing is happening all game. Some adjustments need to be made because continuing with the same approach will likely lead to two more of the same result.

It's great that they've basically kept the Devils to almost nothing offensively all series, but they're going to have to figure out a way to get to the inside and get some real scoring chances and pressure at 5v5 or else the series hinges on who gets lucky in game and so far it's been the Devils twice.

i have been hard on kakko over the years but he is playing with an edge and attitude to him, a little bit of arrogance in the scrums instead of just being a shrinking violet every time. that being said he can be better between whistles but he is like issue 9 or 10 when it comes to the forwards ha

Would love to see Goody or anyone else take some liberties next game. I don't even care if they take a penalty. Go ahead and do it. Get pissed off and maybe you spark something. Such a better option over laying down and dying like a bitch.

2 of them standing still with an extra man, he does nothing to set up the power play or really any plays honestly and he doesn’t use his size and strength to hit or forecheck, he barely draws penalties too because he’s hardly engaged as fully as he could be most of the time and that goes for most of the team and that’s what people mean about will and determination etc etc

Not fighting with you, I understand the merits of your viewpoints but I think the truth is we’re all right to certain extents

Yup this is him all game long. Being at the game you see it even more. He’s a child
He seems like he's just thrilled to be an NHL player and that's that. I really don't get the impression that he's a hard worker off the ice and he simply does not have the focus or head on his shoulders that is laser focused on being an elite NHL player like you see with stars in this league. The fact that he is basically the exact same player he was in his first season just screams a player who is not committed to improving and not working hard enough in the offseason.

He's a goofball and seems like he's totally content with his place in the league, which is bizarre considering where he is at and where some of his peers are at. Can't wait to see the negotiations coming from his camp this offseason.

See, I'm very interested in that kind of stuff, but I don't think you could ever measure "Player A wanted to win more than Player B."

I don't even think that could be legitimately coded for measurement.

Ok, let's look at driving the net. What if Player B felt that passing or shooting from the perimeter was a better play? If he's 5'10" and has a great wrist shot, it probably is the better play for the attributes he possesses.

I think it's also far too disingenuous from the crowd it comes from to properly code, at least to their satisfaction.

People: "GET TO THE FRONT OF THE NET YOU WUSS!!!!"

Kreider: *Never leaves the front of the net*

Those same people: "Big deal, all you do is tip pucks."

I think perhaps a legitimate measurement and discussion could be had but 99% of it on here is just lashing out.

The same thing has been happening all season. The team goes perimeter and stationary.

For me, it is a combination of playing our game with less attention to detail and the Devils being more defensively responsible and managing the puck better. We're Tampa Baying the Devils the way TB neutralized our speed after Game 2 ECF. The way we played Games 1 and 2 made them have to slow things down and play a defensive minded game. The difference is that Tampa played in the dirty areas to win and we do not do that with the Devils. The Devils, a speed and transition team that's miles faster than us individually and collectively, did not like playing the style of Game 3 and 4 but had to in order to get back into the series. Now, we'll see if they want to play looser in front of their crowd. I don't think it's a good idea to get into a track meet with them. I think our D can activate from time to time to get more offense and establish the ozone. Generally, we're managing the puck pretty well but very carefully, in order to prevent the Devils' transition. To our detriment, we favor going rinkwide on the outlet pass to the weak side and when the lanes are clogged, our forward -- who's usually facing toward our own end -- can't do anything but tip it away and out of danger.

Let me clear it up for everyone. Rangers blew their load in games 1 and 2.

Game 3 was a disaster and game 4 was a pathetic excuse of a hockey team.

This team is embarrassing and we should all be embarrassed to call ourselves rangers fans.

The devils will get going in game 5. This series is over.

DONE. Devils in 6.

haula has looked like a clown this series BUT he has been effective at shit disturbing. he is playing just under 20 mins a game (which is normally too much for a player like him) but he is making the most of the time. we dont have anyone running around like that to disrupt things. we have been so passive. you are correct that to start game 5 for the first 5 minutes they need to go back to making the devs uncomfortable...

Well it's a public forum not a conference on sport science. We're very bad during games because as we know from psychology, stress alters our judgement

Not everyone should have to pass peer review to post their thoughts here. This board servers many functions for different people. For some it's discussion and analysis, other's it's therapy, others it's community.

As annoying as he was, an Avery type would be amazing right now. He'd get under their skin in seconds and be in the Utica goalies head after one shift. Also, can they please take some liberties on Hughes if they continue to run Igor. We're back to the Hank days and just letting it happen

If I am going to watch this puke, I would rather see the Kid Line develop by playing 18 mins+ a game. If they stuck to the plan that Colorado and others carry out, you would have Rantanen and Landeskog by now in Kakko and Laf. What a ****** shame.
No amount of ice time would turn Laf and Kakko into those two players, not a f***ing chance in hell. Do you even watch those other guys play? Not trying to be a dick but this is just pure cope man come on. Did you see the plays Rantanen made last night? Kakko couldn't do that in a million years. And forget about the other guy he just has trouble receiving passes in stride.
