Detroit Red Wings 23/24 season thread

We don't have enough centers to double all of them up. At least not until Kasper and Danielson make the cut.

Veleno has never looked this good, therefore he deserves another try. If it doesn't work, then we shuffle the lines again.

I'm guessing the lines stay the same for a few games because they won today, but I guess I wouldn't mind seeing it because it means splitting up Copp and Compher. Raymond has some chemistry with Compher, and Sprong can shoot, so it makes for a better 2nd line.

At least Perron got that BullDozer -duo now going

Perron - Copp - Compher was good.

Rasmussen can't find a line he fits in... Maybe it works with Veleno and Sprong.

Ras will be fine. I think his play on Joey's line has been alright and he's been pretty responsible. He's getting looks offensively. It will hopefully start going in for him soon.

One of Rasmussen's earlier strengths was to win pucks behind the net and give great killer passes behind the goal. What I saw on earlier Daniel Sprong highlights, there's was many this kind of goals. Assist comes from the corner/behind the net, and he snipes it in.

Hope this could work on this line and Veleno is the guy to make zone entries, be the skill-duo with Sprong and Rasmussen pulls the piano for loose pucks/battles.

I get it, teams have our inital plan on the PP scouted, we want to get it Larkin in the middle. It is getting taken away. Need someone who is willing to clap bombs up top to open things up again. Mo doesn't do it, Ghost will.

After watching Ras for half a decade now, he is a testament to why being tall has diminishing returns in the NHL. His center of gravity is too high for him to fully assert himself without turning into Bambi on skates. Im repeatedly disappointed at how ineffective he can be along the boards despite being a mountain of a man. He could be 6’1 and his physical impact would be comparable. He does have his moments, but it’s usually in scrums or after the whistle.

Veleno, on the other hand, seems to have really settled into his frame. His puck protection skills have skyrocketed. Plenty of us have noted over the years that he seems to be something of a late bloomer at every stage. This could be his arrival. I don’t think he’ll ever be an offensive dynamo but I think he’s got 40 points in him at some point.

Yeah, maybe Mo will be more inclined to shoot with lesser teammates on PP2. Still not sure how I feel about having Mo off PP2 but Ghost is a nice option to fall back on.

Anyway, get Walman off the PP. His slapper is great but his shot selection and puck distribution skills are not. He’s a one trick pony on the PP.

I'm just of the mindset that Seider needs to learn to do it, or coached to because he is our long term plan. Not Ghost who is a short term solution. Now if it was someone like Edvinsson or ASP in the future then sure, if they end up better then play them over Mo.

They just switched the power-play on new formations at Boston game.

Left Gostisbehere as the only D to unit 1. Raymond went there as the 4th forward.

Seider was dropped to 2nd unit and that scored. They didn't use Petry there at all and Walman was there. Both units scored. Nice.

1st unit
(bumper/nefront) Perron

DeBrincat - Larkin - Raymond

(pointman) Gostisbehere

2nd unit
(bumper/nefront) Copp

Sprong - Compher - Walman

(pointman) Seider

I think I like these more, especially the 1st one.

I think Ghost gets re-signed. Matta's contract shouldn't be too hard to trade next offseason.

Walman - Seider
Ed - Ghost
Chiarot - Holl/Petry

Wallinder spends another season in GR, then Petry's contract expires.

This year.

Hopefully we trade Maatta this year.

The guy is killing any momentum like 2019 Patrick Nemeth. Everytime he touches the puck I audibly groan because I know it's going to be a shinpad killing shot that goes back towards Detroit's end.

He does not look as good as he did last season. Maybe TDL trade to a team desperate for D? Then bring Ed up?

It looks like the coaches are encouraging the D to shoot more this season, but maybe they should just tell Maatta to pass? I agree his shot selection sucks.

I think Maatta would be a good candidate to be traded as soon as a team has a major injury on D. But for us either he or Petry need to go soon to clear a logjam. And Maatta has more trade value.

Who would be a good trade partner if we were moving him? Dallas?

my original thought before the season was we signed ghost to be a trade acquisition with retention for possibly a first (if he had great point production and showed some kind of defense) by thanksgiving because by then, ed was supposed to be ready to go. Now, i mean, you have to keep ghost and trade one of maatta/holl/petry to bring ed up.

Maatta get's you a return, petry would just be a "excuse me, we kind of fuc*ed up on this one, we'll take future considerations that will never amount to anything" to san jose or something.

walman - seider
ed - ghost
chiarot/holl whatever

Chiarot hasn't played nearly as bad as last year, unless petry is clouding all of that. Holl started out pretty solid, but I've recently soured on some of his play. Kind of understand what leafs were talking about at times.

Fabbri is in the lineup against NYR tomorrow :o

Larkin is dinged up, and it looks like Lalonde is demoting Raz. As much as I'd like to rag on Copp, Raz has done less this season.

They skated with these lines and defense pairs:

Alex DeBrincat-Austin Czarnik (for Larkin)-Lucas Raymond
David Perron-J.T. Compher-Andrew Copp
Robby Fabbri-Joe Veleno-Daniel Sprong
Klim Kostin-Michael Rasmussen-Christian Fischer

Jake Walman-Moritz Seider
Ben Chiarot-Justin Holl
Olli Maatta-Shayne Gostisbehere
Jeff Petry

Ville Husso will start on Tuesday.

Holl has been fine for what he provides. I know there are some on this board that like to jump on him for his toronto reputation but I don't understand it. He's been good as a bottom pair guy in Detroit.

Petry has negative value and is more likely to get picked up on waivers than a trade. The list of GMs in the league that I think are dumb enough to take this guy after seeing how he's played this year I can count on one hand.

Maatta is still under 30 even though it seems like the dude has been in the league forever. My problem with Maatta is that his skills seem to be diminishing. So it's better to trade a guy like that sooner than later. Plus there's already rumors that Calgary is having a fire sale on defensemen and I'd rather get our guy to the market first.

15 team NTC and NMC

Petry has a NMC and can't be waived unless we're buying him out. He finally got to Detroit. He's not going to waive his clauses.

DeBrincat has really disappeared over the past 2 weeks. Hoping he can get going again. We need him to get hot again with some tough games coming up in late November. Leafs, Devils, Bruins, Wild, Rangers, Stars, Hurricanes, and Devils again, all between November 17 and Christmas.

I don't really read to far into what leaf fans said, just that I can understand their irritation with him. He doesn't ever really show that he is a game-changer type defensemen which is completely fine, but some of the non-thought plays he makes, makes things interesting. He definitely needs to watch where he pokes or leaves his stick, thats for sure.
