Lets let the Wings make the draft pick and then trade for the player, saves us making the wrong choice. haha.

To be fair, they haven't had much success in drafting of late. Their last success story seems to be Franzen 8 years ago.

Time will tell. Things don't look too bad with Järnkrok, Tatar, Nyqvist and Jurco. Especially Järnkrok.

Hmm, move Franson out of the conference, get a pick, then bring up Blacker.

I'm sure Cody has more to offer than what he's shown thus far, but as long as it's not against us on a frequent basis, why not.

Didn't Detroit move their first rounder last year for Quincey? If that's the benchmark, Franson should definitely fetch a 2nd rounder in my view. Considering our lack of depth on the blueline we could use Franson. Not saying I wouldn't be willing to move him if Detroit paid the right price, but if not, their loss.

This is fantasy fluff.

Why would Nonnis move Franson for a second rounder? A player who may never play or will take years to even become as good as Franson? Everyone in the NHL is looking for Dmen. This is fantasy fluff and as usual To. always gets ripped in rumours.A 2nd rounder gets you Komi., not Franson who will be worth a late first min. by trade deadline.

IIRC, Phaneuf plays the third most difficult minutes among dmen in terms of quality of competition and puts up top-15 offensive totals whilst being a highly physical presence.

There are a lot of issues with this roster. Phaneuf ain't one of them.

Onto the next scapegoat, right?

Well, that's your opinion and it's one that I (obviously) don't share.

I've watched him closely during his time as a Leaf and his play doesn't impress me one single bit. As for the bolded, that's also one of the reasons why he gets beaten so often, leaving his defence partner and his goalie high and dry multiple times per game..

As previously stated, I've NEVER LIKED Phaneuf and I will happily continue to not like him well after he leaves the Leafs.

Phaneuf is the most over-rated player in the NHL for a reason. It's not my problem if you (and most other Leaf fans around here) can't understand why.

Believe what you want about Phaneuf. I've already seen the truth of the matter and it isn't the rosy picture that you (and others) seem to think it is.

Since it's likely to be a very strong draft, I don't think you'll see many first round picks dealt. Just a gut feeling.

Either way, trade deadline deals always ups the value of most players. Franson would be no exception.

If he can play good to great, a top 60 pick and perhaps a decent prospect wouldn't be out of the question.

I'll trade him for Detroits first.

Revisit this at trade deadline? When is trade deadline this year? In like 25 games lol ?

Perhaps the difference is Kadri would be considered developing in the minors in Detroit, but in Toronto he's being screwed by the team.

Gustav Nyquist has been a PPG player in the AHL the past 2 seasons. Last year Tatar was their leading scorer in the AHL. Sproul, Ouellett, Frk, Jurco all likely will be developed in the minors.

When you are drafting in the high 20's you aren't drafting 7th., 5th., 2nd. overall.

We do not have 10 NHL D men and losing Kostka or Fraser etc to waivers is no big loss at all.

I would not trade Franson now as he has a lot of upside. He could be moved at the trade deadline for a late first or early second if he fails to impress under Carlyle system ( I fully expect that he will).

I would say that most of the Leafs players are available if the right offer is presented, with Dion among them. I'm not a Dion fan at all and it is more for the attitude. His interview yesterday again shows that it is all about Dion....and not the Leafs.....captain Red Bull!

No way! Until we see what Franson can do with a proper coach it is not worth risking his potential for a 3rd/4th! It is Detroit which will be a low pick too so I'd think long and hard even if it was a 2nd.

I completely agree with you, lets see what the kid can do under Caryle.

If anything we're going to trade Komi before Franson. Though I suspect neither will be moved unless Rielly really showed that he's ready.

There would have to be a market for Komisarek to trade him. It won't be the Leafs choice to trade one over the other.

If there's no market, then we buy him out instead. Again, it all depends on the youth trying to take his spot. Seems unlikely at this point, but we won't know for certain until Gardiner returns.

They gave up a 1st for Quincey right? Yeah.. you're not getting Franson for a 3rd/4th. We want a 1st too lol.

I don't think they even consider his buyout until the summer.

The Wings have better scoring depth than the Leafs do, which allows them to be more patient with their prospects. The Leafs had major issues with the lack of secondary scoring for the majority of last season (with the exception of January, when the 2nd line showed up), yet one of the best offensive prospect was "stuck" in the minors.

The Wings drafting hype isn't about the no brainer top 10 picks, but all the diamonds in the rough they've found a decade ago. Granted, most of them haven't made a significant contribution until they were 25 or so.

Perfectly serious, actually. :)

I never liked Phaneuf before he became a Leaf, and I like him even less now that he is a Leaf. And to have him as the Leafs' Captain.. well, that's a bad joke in and of itself.

I don't like his game; it's just too brutally bad to watch on a regular basis. There's a reason why nobody is willing to screen the opposing goalie whenever Phaneuf is on the ice; they don't want to get hit in the head by one of Phaneuf's infamously hard and inaccurate shot. He's also brutal on the penalty kill. Not to mention, his decision-making (and on-ice leadership) skills are highly suspect and are clearly NOT up to the standard befitting a captain of an NHL team.

Add to all of that his absolutely ridiculous salary/cap hit and the picture is complete.

It's my opinion that it's time to move this over-rated, overpaid clown.

He's never going to lead this team anywhere (except into the league basement again), so Nonis might as well trade him while he still has some value. The Leafs need to begin building for the future, and I really don't see Phaneuf as an important part of it.

As for Franson, I see more in him than most people around here will give him credit for. Given the opportunity, I firmly believe that Franson could replace Phaneuf's offence AND be better defensively than Phaneuf. Franson is already a better decision-maker than Phaneuf and should get more ice-time for it as a result and his shot is far more accurate than Phaneuf's ever was.

You honestly think that players in the NHL are afraid to stand in front of the net because they think someones shot is unpredictable? That statement says about all we need to know about your expertise in this matter.

Also, how would you possibly know anything about his on ice leadership skills? Oh yeah... you don't.

If it's as "inaccurate" as you say wouldn't the front of the net be the safest place to stand?

If they need to free up a roster spot to make room for a better younger player, then they will. Nonis has set the precedent hasn't he?

Like I said, it's unlikely at this point but we're in a youth movement so never say never.
