If they need to free up a roster spot to make room for a better younger player, then they will. Nonis has set the precedent hasn't he?

Like I said, it's unlikely at this point but we're in a youth movement so never say never.

Agreed they will make room if forced to. They'd probably move Franson 1st over a buyout.

What precedent? Nonis hasn't bought anyone out yet.

Ditching veterans in order to play the kids. I think he's referring to getting rid of the "veteran" Franson to free up a spot for Rielly on the roster.

A third or fourth round pick? lol

I think Franson is poised for a breakout year. Big, mobile, some offensive upside, these are the types of guys we should be trying to acquire not peddle for crap. Let them have Komisarek if they want, we'll even cover some of the money for a 3rd rounder in 2013.

Phaneuf Gunnarson
Gardiner Holzer
Franson Liles

Fraser

I don't see a logjam minus Komy.

Fully agree. Hopefully Nonis sees that if Franson is attractive enough to Detroit given their style of play, he should sure as heck be attractive enough to develop here.

Franson is only a few months older then Holzer, and younger then Kostka.

Unless it's an offer we can't refuse, don't see much of a point in dealing him right now.

What is Franson 25 ? I think we keep him and his size.

No need to rush Rielly, he should go back to junior.

I like Holzer, but putting him in your Top-4 would be silly.

Agree with both. The article is a joke. Franson is definitely poised for a breakout year, and after hearing his comments about taking his foot off the pedal last year and taking thigns for granted, and not doing that this year, I am excited to see what Franson brings this year.

I say unless Detroit is throwing an offer our way that has Franson in it but returns us Filppula, there's really no chance we move him for next-to-nothing.

Thought they meant buying out Komisarek.

Isn't Franson still a young player himself?

Completely agree. If the rumors of his willingness to use his big frame more pan out, he could be an effective defenseman for us. Especially under Carlyle, who will let him know exactly what is expected in different situations.

Ah, I think you're right. My apologies. I missed the buyout part in the post he responded to. I'm pretty apprehensive on buying Komi out atm, though, without seeing how the players adopt to Carlyle's system.

I think there will be a rush of teams that decide last minute they don't want to carry contracts for another 5-10 years of some players, but don't have the money to pony out am amnesty payout. It hasn't happened yet, but I fully expect it to.

In this situation we would benefit - the team would trade said player to us, along with compensation for the amnesty (ie, picks, prospects, or players) and we would subsequently buy the player out, should be chose to.

Makes absolutely no sense to trade Franson at this point in the season without even watching him play. Leafs are thin on defense as it is. Unless some team wants to overpay, what's the point in dealing him?

Nonis is not an idiot. He's not going to trade a 200 game NHL defenseman capable of playing top 4, especially when almost every team wants D, for a 3rd-4th round pick that will probably never play for the Leafs ever.

They overpaid for Quincey, if they want Franson, 1st round pick or go try and sign Lebda to help you :D.

Young and cheap and can play PP. Exactly what we want to keep....at least for this year....unless he is a piece in a deal for #1C.

Assuming the rules allow this, it's another reason why it'd be dumb to waste an amnesty buyout on Komi.

The problem is Dion is asked to do too much because he is so much better then the rest of the blueline. (1) It has been demonstrated his best years have all been when he played around 18 minutes, but because there is no one better he is forced to play 25+ with a result of diminishing returns. It should be noted he was 12th in scoring among D last year which is pretty respectable. It's pretty hard to take your post seriously. (2) I can't be bothered to point out the numerous other flaws in your post because I don't believe you really thought it out before postiing it, or you simply don't know what you are talking about.

As for Franson, this is mere speculation and in light of Fransons new found willingness to be physical it would be silly to move him before we see what he can do.

(1) There are 6 D per game, so the average ice time for each of them is 20 minutes.

Phaneuf should play less than that to be at his best???

(2) Glass house...

I wouldn't trade Franson. Still young, could be utilized better by Carlyle, and has the strength and attitude to play nasty

I don't like Franson at all cause he is essentially a powerplay specialist but not elite at it. I don't see his future with this team at all.

Having said that he's on an attractive contract, is an RFA at the end of the year and can be a bottom pairing dman on a lot of teams. I'd expect no less then a 2nd round pick from him and from a team that should be middle of the pack or better in Detroit I'd want something better then just their 2nd.

I hope the Leafs ink Redden to a 1 year deal and Ranger.

Then trade Franson for picks/prospects
Then trade Komisarek (and retain a little salary if necessary) for picks/prospects
Then trade Redden for picks/prospects closer to the deadline
Maybe even trade Liles if we get an awesome offer

Then we've got lots of extra assets (picks/prospects) to head into the off-season with.
