Damn he gonna walk away from 4 million? I don't see him getting anywhere close to that on his next deal.

Yzerman gets bailed out from his bad signing

Because he would have been bought out in the next window and would have never seen all that money.

Zadina would have gotten paid $2.7m for playing this season in the AHL between his salary + buyout. Then be a UFA next summer after Detroit buys him out.

Collects 60% of that $4.5m for playing one season.

Couldn't he be bought out for 1/3 meaning he'd only get 1.500 total spread over the next 4yrs though?

A league minimum contract for 2yrs is about that.

I think that's the case anyways. I could be wrong as IDK the details that well on this one.

Deadline passed. Detroit does not have an arbitration case which would have given them another window to do the buyout at 1/3 his remaining salary.

If they were going to buy him out, they would have done that in June. I mean they paid $1 mill to Yamamoto and wouldn't pay another $1.52 mill to say goodbye to Zadina.

Doesn’t matter that Detroit has no arbitration cases. Zadina is ineligible to be bought out in the 2nd buyout window, having a AAV less than $4m.

It’s still possible Detroit can trade him if they eat 20-30 percent of his salary some team may throw them a 6th or 7th rounder

Friedman reiterated that he believes Zadina won't contest.
Because it’s likely his idea. Yzerman clearly said two days ago, what would happen if he cleared. They were trying to help Zadina find a situation and an opportunity somewhere else, after he asked for a trade. They wouldn’t suddenly try to screw the guy, because he cleared waivers.

If Zadina then came back (after clearing) and said, “I won’t report”, he may have said something like, “then we can terminate your contract if you’d like?” I could see that being logical.

This is very likely his and/or his agent’s idea.

Yep, he gets in close to the net with a great chance, doesn't bury it and his body language is complete frustration almost every time. He needs to learn to say screw it to any misses and get back to work trying to get one.

Yep. So many games I would be sitting there, ok kid bury a couple. Never came.
As a former player the toughest thing is finding chemistry with your mates...sometimes you just don't find that

It's 1.8 for 2 more seasons on a team that has to spend money like Jim Benning with his hair on fire just to get to the cap floor. Yzerman gave him term to give him runway for improvement. Zadina doesn't want to hang around and fight for his ice in Detroit anymore, despite negotiating that contract. It's a non issue and definitely not on Steve Yzerman that he did right by his young player only for the player to then back out.

im guessing he has an offer in europe to make just as much as detroit would have paid him . i dont think hes rugged enough for nhl physicality

I can’t see any European team offering Zadina more than the $1.8m USD he’s scheduled to make in the NHL this season?

maybe he just wants to get out, regardless of the lost money

get on a new team and fill detroit's net the team that ruined his development, that'll show em

No he doesn't. Can't sign other deals with a deal in place in the NHL. This isn't a waive to guy him out. He is in GR or Detroit this season. Steve already said he will be at camp and still has a chance to earn a spot on the team this season. He said that before Zadina cleared.

That's not guaranteed $4.5 million. More like $2 million, after tax, escrow and agent fees

Many people on here that know finances and tax stuff much better than I have already proven this false. People who make lots of money have financial people that can have them paying much less in taxes and other fees. Taxes don't have as much an affect as some think. Players agents have also said the tax thing is not that big of a deal for high paid athletes.

This is a great move by Zadina. This is the fallout from a team reaching for a player. Zadina is flat out not a good enough player to ever live up to his draft position. This makes for a very negative / toxic environment to try and develop in. I'm guessing that's why he's so hellbent on getting out of Detroit. His next team / fanbase isn't going to give a shit that he is an underperforming former top 10 pick that is supposed to be playing on the top line by now. They are just going to see a young player with some raw skill that still has a lot of time to grow. It will be much better for everybody. Props to Yzerman. This should happen more often than it does.

The title says (contract expected to be terminated). Are you saying that's not going to happen? Pretty sure the guy you responded to was taking that into consideration when he formed his opinion. I too think he's headed to Europe once his contract is mutually terminated.

Never thought I'd see a Filip Zadina thread hit 500 posts but here we are lmao
In his draft year, especially early that year, there were many, many, many people on this site saying he should be the 2nd pick in the draft. Even leading up to the draft, many were still saying 3rd. So there’s been plenty….

Walking away from 4.5 million is not very good judgement.
Maybe Zadina doesn't want to waste a year of his career for money.

Ah, that is new. Have posted in this thread before that, and didn't see the bracket part added now. Was just going by what Steve said on July 1st when he initially put him on waivers. Obviously something changed in the past few days as Yzerman said he would be at training camp.

I think HHOF hockey player knows this better than random dude on a message board. Here is Pronger's twitter thread about player salaries -

I have no doubt that the USA is a corrupt af country. But this type of tax shenanigans is the privilege of the billionaires who own and pay the politicians, not the privilege of a random hockey player from a small European country.

People don't realize hockey players are still working class folks. They're labour aristocrats due to making an insane amount of money yes (and even then thats just nhl players. Career AHLers dont even make 6 figures), but are ultimately still making their money by working for someone else.

Yep, i just love when people go after overpaid players and ignore the billionaire owners. Like, damn, the system really does indoctrinate you that thoroughly.
