He likes to get a new opportunity elsewhere, whatever it will cost.

Guy likes to play hockey.

Weird thinking in here "swallow your pride". Like what?

Zadina already had requested a trade at last season. Trade didn't happen. Yzerman waived him, no one didn't take him for free.

He would rather leave 4.5M on the table, to get a chance elsewhere. Someone will sign him for league minimum, after this.

Take the money go to AHL for 2 seasons? Think he likes to play his loved sport for 2 more years elsewehere with smaller money than go to AHL bus rides. He has all right to do that, and it's a brave move.

Certainly money isn't a factor for him. But opportunity will be.
Do you have a link confirming he requested a trade last season?

Every story I've seen is he requested a trade via his agent a couple weeks prior to this draft.

Weird that Zadina would agree to this he has 4.5m in salary owed to him over the next two years. Swallow your pride and take ur bag
Normally it’s the player who asks for it, and the team agrees, knowing he’s going back to Europe.

I’m trying to remember when it hasn’t been the player who initiated the termination, other than when there were drug issues, etc.

Something has obviously happened after Yzerman’s comments in the last two days. He’s likely upset nobody claimed him and is throwing a temper tantrum.

He’ll end up back in Europe putting up big numbers, because he can play his outside game in those leagues. If this does happen though, NHL teams are going to be very hesitant to give him a contract anytime soon.

Highly unlikely he gets two years in the AHL on his current contract. If he spends a majority of next season in the AHL or stays in the NHL and doesn't do anything measurable, he's a surefire buyout next June either for Detroit or some cap strapped team that sees some value in that $450k cap credit.

So, basically Detroit prepared to bury him in the A and just eat a $750K cap charge while paying his full salary for next season. Gambled on him wanting to avoid the A and thus void the remainder of his contract to save the Wings all of $1.52 mill in real money from a buyout. Not like the Wings were against the cap and would even get a cap credit for 24/25.

At this point, if the Wings are facing having to have to do one or a combo of retain, add a sweetener or take back bad salary in exchange, or wait till next summer to buy him out, then agreeing to a contract termination is probably the best option for Detroit. Get a roster/contract spot and $1.825M in cap space back without any dead cap or anything like that.

For Zadina, I'm assuming he wants something that gives him the flexibility to bounce around the league until he finds a fit and be able to go back home if he doesn't.

Sounds like Zadina's main priority in all of this is to stay away from the AHL, but his current contract likely means he spends most of next season there unless the Wings have a bunch of forward injuries to start the year.

By terminating his contract, it lets him sign somewhere for cheap and with a European Out Clause that'll either mean he bounces around the league on waivers or gets to go home if he clears and gets sent to the AHL.

Barring Yzerman planning to bring in more wingers, it wasn't like they completely buried him on the depth chart. A couple of forward injuries and he likely stays on the NHL roster. But he was probably rightfully tabbed as a guy outside of their 12 regular forwards.

I can't imagine the Wings were opposed to him going to Grand Rapids either. GR has been pretty awful the past few seasons and the Wings probably would've been happy to have him tear it up there for a season to help get them back in the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Interesting if it happens.

This goes to show that the second contract for still developing high pedigree players isn't necessarily beneficial to them. I get the desire to 'go get the bag', but it's in your best interest as a player to remain an attractive commodity. And very frequently players tied to large salaries generally lose a ton of perceived value as a player mainly due to the contract attached to their name.

It'd be really interesting to see a player really bet on himself here. I'd love to see Edmonton on a one or two year show-me deal. Lots of talented centers to play with there. And they really need that cheap depth moving forward.

The more I think about this, I’m changing my opinion on it.

Usually in a situation like this, other managers would automatically side with the team, because frankly, they don’t want what’s perceived as a malcontent in their own locker room. They don’t want to endorse this happening more and more. It’s always been seen very negatively upon the player. Basically blacklisting him from the league.

In this situation though, Yzerman was trying to help Zadina find another opportunity, and if this is the way to make that happen, good for both sides. Gives Detroit more money and a roster spot. Zadina gets a chance somewhere else.

We’re in a strange spot with the cap right now. Under normal circumstances, Zadina is claimed on waivers. It’s just nobody has any free money laying around, and teams aren’t taking chances the cap will rise next year, as speculated.

If this is treated more as a “way around cap issues” than a “malcontent spoilt kid trying to get his way” as it normally would be, good for both sides..

The more I think about it, I’d actually wager that Yzerman would endorse someone like Holland taking a chance on him. So while I do think many managers still wouldn’t touch it, I do think this is more of a special circumstance than a normal termination. Everyone just wants what’s good for the player here.

Exactly this. Like Why would you turn down 4.5M LOL

Couldn't he be bought out for 1/3 meaning he'd only get 1.500 total spread over the next 4yrs though?

A league minimum contract for 2yrs is about that.

I think that's the case anyways. I could be wrong as IDK the details that well on this one.

Contract termination - I'd take him on a 2-way deal in PIT/WBS. Can play next to Nylander.
He's willing to walk away from a guaranteed $4,560,000 laregly in part because he doesn't want to play in the AHL for Detroit.

I highly doubt he takes a contract anywhere - especially a two-way - without the explicit expectation he'll be on an NHL roster.

Deadline passed. Detroit does not have an arbitration case which would have given them another window to do the buyout at 1/3 his remaining salary.

If they were going to buy him out, they would have done that in June. I mean they paid $1 mill to Yamamoto and wouldn't pay another $1.52 mill to say goodbye to Zadina.

I'm just not sure if DET has another buyout window this summer

They do not. To have the second window, you need to have an Arbitration case which the Wings do not have.

But, they were done their season before mid April. Doesn't take more than the 10 weeks between then and the buyout window to decide whether you can move him or exercise the buyout.

Zadina - Hello
Voice - Zadina you come work for me now!
Zadina - Ovie?
Voice - You come work for me now, hard work , low pay
Zadina - Actually I was thinking about going to play in the KHL...
Voice - No KHL for you per Putin, Welcome to team, don't forget to tell your agent. Oh and Zadina, you are not welcome back in Russia until I break record.

The buyout candidate also has to have a minumum $4m cap hit

I'm guessing the Wings don't want Zadina clogging up another retention spot (right now Vrana is the only one), as those could be better utilized around the TDL if/when they move guys like Perron or Ghostisbehere or get involved in helping another team with retaining a rental for the rest of the year.

The options are ride out the contract or a buyout next summer to get rid of the 2.7m next season. Do the Wings want to have a retention spot used and back after next season or next season a the following with a buyout on the books? Hard to say. They can bury him for sure and ride it out but would probably be better to unload him and show they gave him a chance.

I get the sense the termination of the contract is Zadina initiated. Yzerman gave the presser that he's perfectly fine with Zadina coming to camp and earning a spot if possible or then going down until a spot opens up. If Zadina responded that he doesn't want to go to the AHL then it probably became a discussion of the only option the Wings would have in that case is to suspend the contract and it probably came to the conclusion to just terminate and be done with it. Both sides can walk away. Everything Yzerman and the coaches have ever said is that they believe in Zadina's effort and ability he just has to do it. But they also can't hold a spot for him on the Wings indefinitely. If Zadina doesn't want to ride buses, that's perfectly understandable.
