Contract Termination: [DET] Red Wings terminate contract of F Filip Zadina

Retain 50% and Edmonton gives a 5th rounder.

Edmonton RW depth after Brown and Hyman is Ryan on the 4th and a rotation in the 3rd line spot. I’d be ok with Holland giving him a shot at the expense of a late round pick.

I'm guessing the Wings don't want Zadina clogging up another retention spot (right now Vrana is the only one), as those could be better utilized around the TDL if/when they move guys like Perron or Ghostisbehere or get involved in helping another team with retaining a rental for the rest of the year.

As an outsider fan, my question is, is there a particular element of his game that leads to him not finding success (work ethic, hockey IQ, injury history, not enough opportunities... other?), was Detroit just not a fit, or is there another reason for his early lack of success?
1. Hockey IQ. He has zero anticipation, and you can pretty much count on him to make the worst decision with the puck or without.

2. Bad shot. Even when he, by sheer accident, finds himself in a good shooting position, he will either miss the net by three feet or hit the goalie in the logo.

He actually tries hard. The effort is not an issue.

Buyout next year costs them less than a mill in real dollars and they get a cap credit of 450k next year followed by a cap hit of 455k in 25-26

Wonder if that buyout credit gets him some interest in a year from teams that want that extra bit of cap space going into next summer.

Probably won't return anything Earth shattering, but likely wouldn't require the Red Wings to retain, take back bad salary or add a sweetener, where they seem to be stuck with him now.

But with that buyout for next summer, I would be really surprised if Zadina ends up collecting that $2.7M salary for 24/25.

Unless he significantly turns it around I don't see any route but a buyout. That is an interesting point though could probably garner a late pick from a team wanting a bit more breathing room for a year

The only comparable I could recall was Jared Cowen, who went from Ottawa to Toronto only to get bought out which gave the Leafs a $650k credit.

However, he was part of the return in the trash for trash deal that sent Phaneuf the other way to the Sens.

We’ll see what happens tomorrow, but there is word the Detroit Red Wings are considering placing Filip Zadina on waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract.

Zadina is owed $4.56M in salary over the next two seasons. This is tricky to report, because agent Darren Ferris would not comment, but, as I write this, the belief is Zadina is prepared to walk away from the money and not contest the move. According to several sources, in recent conversations, the player made it very clear he would not report if sent to the AHL next season. (That would be a contract violation.)

If he clears waivers, he could sign anywhere he wishes.

Zadina asked for a trade before the draft, and the Red Wings placed him on regular waivers on Tuesday. Available to any team, everyone passed. Talking with local media, Yzerman made it clear salary was the problem.

“Am I happy to put him on waivers? No. I signed him to a three-year contract a year ago because I believed that he was going to grow. The reality now is: you wanted that contract, that contract may prevent you from getting the opportunity you’re looking for in another organization.”

Terminating it would solve the problem, but it’s a surprise we didn’t see coming. Zadina, the sixth overall pick in the 2018 draft, has 28 goals in 190 NHL games.

The Red Wings could place him on waivers Thursday at noon ET.

For as much fun as it is to make fun of the comments he made about falling in the draft, that is the exact type of reaction and mindset I would want from a young player I am drafting. I want my players to have chips on their shoulders and be ambitious about their careers.

I'd be surprised if an NHL team didn't sign him
I'm sure they'd be interested. I don't know if anyone would give him a guarantee of playing in the NHL if he's that scared of playing in the AHL though.

I don't think he would not report. He's not a locker room problem like that. Writing was on the wall and this is probably the best thing for him. Berg has already passed him from the same draft, Mazur, Soderblom, Kasper are all knocking on the door. It's just tough to see him really getting anything more than 13th forward minutes going forward.

Walking away from $4.5 million dollars over the next 2 years is the best thing for him ?

I think it's the best thing for the Wings and Yzerman !!!!!

It's the best thing for him to try to make more money in the NHL long term. He's not getting playing time with us based off our signings and stable of young guys.

This exactly. When young (and old) players talk confidently, hockey fans love them.

When Zadina talks confidently, he gets booed.

This is a seriously weird obsession.

Contract termination - I'd take him on a 2-way deal in PIT/WBS. Can play next to Nylander.

If the Wings were otherwise faced with having to retain salary, buy him out or take back bad salary to move him, then this works out great for them.

Not so much for Zadina... Since he can't be bought out till next summer, he's basically guaranteed $1.83M this year and at least $910k beyond that if he just shows up to camp for Detroit and does what's asked. Given his resume, he's likely looking at less than $1M for a year as a reclamation project where if he doesn't produce, he ends being passed around on waivers or back in the AHL.

I suppose perhaps he has something lined up back home and is looking to sign an NHL deal that lets him walk if he ends up off the NHL roster.

Any player who does this, doesn’t matter the situation, is going to be hard pressed to get an offer from another NHL team. To terminate, making it easier to leave your situation, won’t be looked at very well around the league.

Has Europe written all over it now.

Wow, thanks for the inside track, no sarcasm intended.

And this guy was a consensus #3 in his draft class.

Sack all the scouts.
