This is what Steve Yzerman does. He fleeces people in Trades. It's also why Tampa has blocked his phone number entirely from the front office staff. ;)

Absolute robbery.

People keep saying it is for Bernier and a 3rd, but it's only for the RIGHTS to Bernier, who already indicated he was testing free agency. To get a very highly touted young NHL ready goalie for a 3rd round pick is insane.

I really fail to see what could go so wrong that the arbitration award would be crippling.

Go out and add say Lehner's $5 mil, Nedeljkovic becomes too expensive at even $3 mil when Hamilton has to be re-signed, Svech needs extended, the forward group needs upgraded, etc. If he gets $4 mil - $4.5 mil on a Binnington comp, that contract will be tough to move freely. His value around the league evidently wasn't much with what has been viewed as a modest contract ask.

Stevie Y used Carolina as his surrogate here. Great for Detroit and a bit strange for Carolina. You spend all of this time and effort developing a goalie (who ends up a Calder finalist) only to let him go for a song?

Based on what? A hot streak in the playoffs? Look at the guy's balance of work. He passed through waivers last year for a reason. Sheesh.

Based on he’s always had the skill set and confidence. Even as a teen.

It’s not rocket science and nothing has ever really changed in the modern era for younger goaltenders. He’s always had the skill set and has always played at a faster pace than his competitors. It just came down to getting those legitimate minutes at the NHL level and the game slowing down for him.

History will judge his career but there is nothing to suggest he doesn’t have a bright future over the next 7-10 years.

Shades of Bob Murray pretending acquisitions of aging fourth liners, bottom pairing defensemen would get the Ducks back to the playoffs.

Uhhhh not even close to the same situation.

There are two possibilities here regarding Canes management. Either

A) They place little priority/value on the goalie position in general and have no intention of overpaying one, even if it is a homegrown prospect

or

B) They have their eyes on somebody else that is such a significant upgrade in goal that they were willing to "lose" a trade in order to clear the cap space/roster spot.

Ned was also arbitration eligible being a late birthday of the 2014 draft. So, if they figured his arbitration award would be more than what they feel he’s worth then makes sense to move on. see how he performs in Detroit. It’s a shot for Detroit given their dearth of goalie prospects.

It seems to be there have to be at least a dozen reasons a team would choose to part with a player - perceived value, competitive window, salary cap, roster bottlenecks, team chemistry, and who knows what else.

Presuming these things happen because of serious character flaws you've dreamed up and assigned to any of the people involved, well, that's just kind of childish and dramatic.

I think Carolina had (what they believed to be) very good reasons for this trade. I just think those reasons are flawed.

Never blame on malice what you can blame on incompetence.

I'll feel the same way, if they don't get somebody that's a clear upgrade in goal.
Well you are correct. There is more going on in Carolina than you know.. there are reasons they didn't even seek arbitration...its believed not to be money thing and something to do with dougie Hamilton...all logical speculation coming out of Carolina this afternoon.

Carolina went from having a decent goalie in Nedeljkovic to 3 UFA goalies (Mrazek, Reimer and Bernier).

Mrazek would most likely be the goalie to resign with Carolina but the clock is ticking towards free agency and if the Canes don’t come to terms with Mrazek he could very well walk, leaving the Canes in somewhat of a predicament.

Waddell just told The Athletic that he thinks the Canes are "a destination" and that there will be a lot of interest among goalies to fill the 1A/1B role. The Canes are probably hoping to find a decent veteran on an cheap ~$1.5 million x 1 year deal and acquire a more expensive option through trade or UFA.

Ideally Mrazek, Reimer or Bernier would fall into the cheap veteran role and all of them will probably get more in Free Agency. If not they can circle back to Carolina.

If he keeps up his same level of play... yep.

Are they even going to be able to sign him though?
Why trade for him if they are not going to try to sign him. That is my thinking but looks like they have more options.

I'm a Hurricanes fan and I'm not saying I love this trade, but DET fans and CAR fans both need to pump the brakes. DET fans saying they got their future #1 for a decade and what a steal. How many goalies have a good 20 game stretch and then do nothing after. That is all you have to look at for Ned, 20 games, playing in front of one of the best defenses in hockey against 7 teams with minimal travel and didn't have to worry about away crowds being a factor. Let's see how he does against COL, VGK, BOS, WAS, PIT, NYI, etc. He is a career .904 SP in AHL, not good by any means. The Hurricanes waived him earlier in the season when anyone could have had him for free. The Hurricanes have never been sold on him and that is why it has taken him so long to get a chance, they have never felt he was a true #1 and didn't want to put him in that positition. As for the return, it does seem minimal, but when do goalies ever get a big return in a trade, yes Cory Schneider the 9th OA pick, but how many years ago was that? If you look at any recent trades involving a goalie, the returns are usually low. $3M does not seem like much to pay but if CAR feels that money is better spent on a more proven goalie, then I'm OK with that. I mean DET is no powerhouse and I don't believe Ned stole many games for the Canes, you think Ned can steal games in front of DET's defense. Not saying he can't be an average goalie, but I don't know if it's the steal everyone thinks it is. And for everyone calling Dundon/Hurricanes cheap, they pretty much spent to the cap last year and have acquired players at deadline to improve the team during Dundon's ownership. Rutherford was cheap, Dundon is unorthodox sure, but I wouldn't call him cheap at all.
