Go out and add say Lehner's $5 mil, Nedeljkovic becomes too expensive at even $3 mil when Hamilton has to be re-signed, Svech needs extended, the forward group needs upgraded, etc. If he gets $4 mil - $4.5 mil on a Binnington comp, that contract will be tough to move freely. His value around the league evidently wasn't much with what has been viewed as a modest contract ask.

Be curious to know how heavily he was shopped and seems odd to make up numbers to make a point. Ned at 3-3.5 finds an easy taker and would be extremely surprised if that isn't the case.

Why did Carolina trade their franchise player for a mediocre UFA?? Is there more to the story?

Why did Carolina waive their franchise player earlier this year? Nedeljkovic was available for any team to take a few months ago.

It is hard to judge the totality of this deal right now. The value is poor I think in comparison to (for example) Adin Hill getting SJ 2022 2nd. But it isn't too far off.

If Carolina happened to trade for John Gibson or Darcy Kuemper tomorrow then I think the conversation would be more complete. Carolina currently has zero NHL goalies signed. I don't think their plan is to go into next year with zero goalies. I really liked Ned and wanted him to get his shot on a Cup-window team but it just wasn't to be.

He plays the puck too much, and he's already 25, our D made him look better than he is, great trade. Go Canes!

Alex looks to be young, good number 1, Bernier is an old platoon goalie. Not sure about this one.

Is Francis still running the Canes?

I'm not making up numbers. In the Athletic interview, Waddell himself threw $5 mil on the upper end of the spectrum out there.

But how does that make sense considering we already know what Ned signed for and can make a reasonable guess that he was never getting 5 in an arbitration ruling? Why would his contract ever have to reach 5 this offseason? Like, I'm not even buying into the Carolina is cheap narrative, I just struggle to understand a situation where Ned could cripple Carolina's cap considering we know they would have never given him 5 and he just signed for two million less...

On the list of Carolina's "franchise players" Ned would've been about number 9 or 10

Have you considered the possibililty Canes management simply doesn't think Ned is worth what he was asking for?

Frankly, I think they're wrong and this move looks like a mistake to me. However, setting a max price for a player and then not going a penny over that would be extremely consistent with the way they do business. I don't think Dundon is "cheap" but he does have a tendency to thumb his nose at some of the traditional aspects of hockey "business."

Is he going to pay a premium contract for a young, relatively unproven goalie just because he's "homegrown" or would he rather give less to somebody else whose name doesn't have as much shine on it but gives you about the same level of performance.

If it wasn't working he'd look like an asshole, but it is working so people have to decide whether they think he's a visionary or just some dweeb who happened to buy the right team at just the right time.

Friedman has talked about Demko and his $5 mil cap hit as a comparable of concern for Carolina. That's likely where that figure is coming from.

If an interested team moves on to a different target, Carolina is potentially without a dance partner in that scenario. Nedeljkovic's market value is a late 3rd round pick on a modest deal. The league overall doesn't think that highly of him. It's not as if Yzerman talked Waddell into this or anything. With arbitration locked in, he might not be tradeable and they couldn't afford that.

I'm not sure this decision is a wise one, mind you. They've tried to do things in the past (i.e. a forward for defenseman trade in 2018, a goalie acquisition last Summer, etc.) and failed to do so. This could end up ugly and they will deserve criticism for it. Just trying to explain the rationale for the immediate timing.

Lol, watch him tank in Detroit and Bernier shine in Carolina. Most goalies are a product of the team in front of them. This trade will prove just that

Riiiiight, keep dreaming

Our team is getting better and better, not nearly the dump you think it is and you haven’t even resigned Bernier yet who said he plans to test FA

Whatever takes the sting off, though

This is what Steve Yzerman does. He fleeces people in Trades. It's also why Tampa has blocked his phone number entirely from the front office staff. ;)
If you get a request from a burner phone that only asks for 3 first rounders to take Tyler Johnson off your hands, don't worry. That's totally normal. :D

Wings weren't terrible defensively last season though and our goalies put up decent numbers. Greiss had essentially the same numbers for Detroit he had for the Isles.

There is a risk Ned just sucks bad for Detroit for 2 years, and goes right to UFA.
Detroit is not Carolina, and the team difference is big.

Waddell is basically saying. "You guys take the risk with the young goalie. I want a more proven guy to win a cup with".
Yzerman is happy to take the young goalie risk, because IF it works out, we have a goalie for the next 7 years at least (assuming we can even re-sign him).

But the narrative that Ned is FOR SURE a star goalie... I mean I'm happy to add him to our team, but I consider it a fair risk that this does NOT work out for us. But still we are in a good position to take these risks. I could see why Carolina wants more of a sure thing.

He was waived before the season started because Canes resigned Mrazek. This is like when people said Martin St. Louis was released. Not saying Ned will turn into a star but him being waived is pretty much irrelevant as he wasn't a starter prior to the season starting. His value has increased since then. Now franchise player is obviously a bit too much but his value should definitely be higher than Adin Hill. So only getting a third pick and an UFA is not a good trade no matter how you slice it.

He signed for that in Michigan where his girl goes to school in Michigan State. That contract possibly wasn't there for Carolina.

if Bernier shines in Carolina, good for him. He deserves it. He was a fabulous soldier for us. He was walking out the door as a UFA

I will root for Ned. He is a classy human being and a hilarious guy. He had a great season this year. I hope he has turned it around. It is worth mentioning that at no point before this year did he look like an NHL goalie. He looked very bad in his few appearances in 19-20. He also had a few momentum-crushing gaffes in the playoffs.

Again, he was overall excellent last year. He was our best goalie and saved our bacon after Mrazek was basically lost for the season after 4 games. I hope he is great for Detroit, but it carries some risk.
